I ‘ve had absolutely no luck finding black lion chest keys, stones, or perfect salvage kits as drops, daily achievement or map completion rewards. I think I got a few keys from personal story but nothing else. I literally have found none! I understand A-net replaced most random rewards with a jug of karma? While that’s nice to have, I guess, it would also be nice to open 1 of my 65 chests without spending money on gems! Maybe change the look of my 12+ gold cost exotic armor that looks like a shogun. Where’s my samuri sword? Has anyone else been so unlucky?

As new content gets added it will become impossible to find groups of 5 for older content.

Those chests are mostly for those players that enjoy gambling.

Personally I am not a gambler, so I knew right from the very start that chests were worthless to me. I just stalk pile my story/daily reward keys for some event to make the most of the keys (like the Halloween event). I am a statistician, not a gambler.

As for T-stones, I simply assume that I will have to purchase them from the gem store. This added cost is simply added into my calculations on how much a set of armour is going to cost.

Fun fact: I once had a Key as a random drop from doing HotW, so they do have a tiny, itsy bitsy chance to drop from enemies.

Last night I had a key drop from some random dredge in Diessa Plateau. Also got one from a map completion a few weeks back. But those are the only keys I’ve received outside of a story quest reward since launch. So I can confirm the keys do still drop; they’re just extremely rare.

I got a key drop at around level 8 in Queensdale, the very first key I ever got and before I even got my first chest. 160 hours later, I have yet to see another key drop.

I got my first Black Lion key drop after 480 hours, not even on my main mind you this was an alt. warrior. I still haven’t had an exotic drop (outside map completion rewards).

Pretty safe to say the drop rates in this game are ultra-abysmal for me

For a while I would acquire a key from a personal story chapter and in unlocking one chest another key would pop out, and so on; once I had about five in a row.
However, I can honestly say that aside from a handful of transmutation stones I have had nothing useful drop from those chests. Rather, I’ve received numerous lacklustre buffs and those annoying and completely pointless transformation potions.

I actually don’t understand why people even waste gems to buy keys, or worry about the key drop rates. When my stack of chests begins to exceed 250, I am going to start selling them.

But… I recognise, that’s just me.

Just want to pitch in and add that I too have had zero keys drop over the course of my various alt careers. The T-stones though are considerably easier to get and i’ve had both the normal and the ‘rare’ (?) ones as a reward for completion.

Regarding the keys, if you need them badly, just create an alt and storyline them to L10 where you receive one as a reward. Much, much easier and faster this way.

This begs the question: how does story quest rewards work when multiple people are partaking in the same story quest (that they are all on)? A party of 5 players could probably clear the story quest up to 10 fairly easy. Would that be one key for each player (all using the same race and relevant background)?

The player whos storyline it is, is the only one who receives any reward.

Now, I haven’t tried to pair up with anyone who has the exact same level and exact same storyline to complete the exact same ‘stage’ so I have no idea how the rewards are handled in that situation, but it’s my guess that whoever starts the quest will be the one to receive the ‘phat lutes’ and then the partied friend will receive theirs when they trigger the stage again.

But i’d be interested to find out!

Purely gem per item chests are the best investment in the game. Apart from bank and character slots, I would buy mostly black keys. You can do this yourself:
- go to wiki
- check the drops, you get 3 drops, one for every category
- add gem costs for the cheapest in every category
- chests always drop more gemwise than the cost of keys
=> if you don’t need anything particular, keys are about the best buy for gems in the game.

I see it as a slot machine that always pays out. OK sometimes it pays dollars instead of euros and other times pounds. I don’t need those right now but everyone goes to the US and UK at least once every few years so no need to throw those away.

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.

Keys are a problem yes where drops are concerned i had about 3 drop over all 8 my caracters 4 of which are lvl80 also have over 200 chests sitting in my bank. I remember a while back that 99% of the time you open a chest you would get a key for another i once got 18 keys in a row by opening chests but that have deffinitly been reduced as i rarely get one in a chest these days. As for stones i dont find those so hard you get them very often about 3-5 for clearing a zone minor stones for lower level zones and fine for higher. So for that reason i got about 70 minor and about 20 fine stone.

if you are both on the same story line the other player can choose to accept the story as his or to replay it at the end of the chapter
If he accepted, he gets his own reward since the completed chapter counts as his own story progression.
I have done this with my husband on all our characters.
