Kinda regret crafting a GS.
Is it too old to run with appearance which like you instead to try get other attention on you?
Why has this thread 2 pages?
You know that taste, intentions and accomplishments are subjective, right?
Why is everybody arguing about OP’s preferences so hard?
I hope you are aware that you’ll never reach a universal satisfying conclusion about these topics.
Because nobody likes “look at me, look at me! aren’t I beautiful?”. Unfortunately that’s how the opening post can be read. He reckons it wasn’t his intention but he hasn’t done anything to change it.
(For those who came in late.)
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
things wouldnt be different at all if you were using sunrise instead
legendaries are nothing special anymore since long time (especially since they can be traded they are worthelss)dont go for expensive items
go for items that FIT TOGETHER!
i for example dont waste any second look for people who have 10 legendaries and whatever
but if i see a nicely combined armor … good matching colors and fitting weapons to that style!
then i am impressed no matter if the weapons are expensive or not
^this. My Norn Warrior is always getting compliments about his look.

But no, people just don’t give a kitten , but if i was wearing a Sunrise ( i wouldn’t go for Twilight because it doesn’t fit for my guardian [personal thing] ), things would be different.
You are deluding yourself if you think that what you wear would make you a center of attention. And besides, you are more likely to draw it by wearing skins nor many people see everyday, with a carefully crafted look, instead of the ones (like Sunrise) everyone has seen a hundred times by now. Christmas tree types of fashion may cause people to look at you (because you glow so much), but are unlikely to make them think you look cool.

I wanted because of the look, because i wanted my character to use something expensive and hard to get and because i wanted people to look and comment and say: “hey, nice GS!” “wow, that is an amazing GS, can i see it? ”
Why do you want that?
Get fractal skins. You will get few whispers here and there in pve and in pvp people will hate you even more for killing them. All skins that you can craft or buy lost their “wow” long time ago. Pretty much only fractal skins have some of it left. Mainly because you can get them only in fractals.
OP:
So, i crafted the Foefire’s Essence and i’m using now for 4 days i think.
But i’m starting to regret it.

I think it’s because the ascalonian GS and Cobalt are kinda similar you know, one is blue with a ghost fog/flame and the other one has a very well done (imo) blue flame effect and then people kinda don’t see anything amazing or nice about the Foefire.
Now i feel like i just wasted time and i should have put the GS to sell for 470g.
argh, i hate myself.
:(
Well I have my own opinion on weapon skins… generally very simple…
I do not mind what others think. As long as I think it’s okay.
I cannot please ppl cause:
- if it’s to beautiful it’s making them jealous
- if it’s normal they do not care and
- if it’s ugly i do not like it so I change it.
So I’ll be honest this approval thing also goes a bit for me, BUT I do not like the legendary GS’s from the first time I saw one I knew I’d never forge one of the 2, let alone combine them.
I liked kymswarden a lot. I used it about the first 2 years on multiple characters, like I like the axe Faithfull…
I crafted quite a few skins, mostly because I like them and wanted to make them.
I crafted the crossing, firebringer, courage and ambrosia, the anomaly and quite some others.. Most of those skins I still use today.
I also use BLT skins (the ones from tickets). In the end it mostly revolves arount you liking it or not.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

Ugh. Get stuff YOU actually like and do not try to impress people. What’s the point? Why do you want compliments in a game? This is something I will never understand…
Your post reminded me of this
“There is something about yourself that you don’t know. Something that you will deny even exists, until it’s too late to do anything about it. It’s the only reason you get up in the morning. The only reason you suffer the kittenty boss, the blood, the sweat and the tears. This is because you want people to know how good, attractive, generous, funny, wild and clever you really are. Fear or revere me, but please, think I’m special. We share an addiction. We’re approval junkies. We’re all in it for the slap on the back and the gold watch. The hip-hip-hoo-kittenin’ rah. Look at the clever boy with the badge, polishing his trophy. Shine on you crazy diamond, because we’re just monkeys wrapped in suits, begging for the approval of others.”
You’re severely misinformed if you think people give out compliments for having a legendary weapon. I’ve never had anyone comment on mine, in fact most times anything is said it’s usually that I play this game far too much, and the GS is proof of that.

If you were using Sunrise nobody would give a rat’s behind. It’s just grind, it doesn’t give your character anything special and tons of people have it already.
Both of these replies have been said already but:
You should not let the possibility of praise from others drive you to do anything you would not otherwise do.
Anyone with enough money or time on their hands can craft a shiny. What makes a player unique is how well they put together their entire character. Stapling valuable items to a character doesnt make it any more interesting. It just shows that at one point you had X amount of gold or X amount of time.
Dont try to elicit praise from people. if you do things properly, it will come (but you shouldnt be starving for it anyway.)

I used to think (build op, pls nerf) like you, but then I took a nerf to the knee.

Are you sure about that? I’ve never seen anyone mention anything about anyone’s legendary.
I have bolt and the Flameseeker prophecies and I do get the occasional ‘nice legendaries’ comment. However I did not make my leges for this, I did make them because I like the skins although it is nice to think that others appreciate all the hard work you put in.
Personally, I think foefire’s essnce is a far nicer skin than sunrise and because it is much rarer to see (I just waypoint into LA and see at the very least 3 people in the player hub I use with sunrise and usually at least one with twilight). The nice exotic skins are the ones that I DO notice and comment on, not the legendaries. Those are not exclusive enough for me to comment on, even if I do like the skins.

I made my legendaries because they fit my armor :P (sunrise, juggernaut)
Look at me I am awesome hehehee
btw your foefire looks good on luminescent armor. try making those to look good.

Very insightful post. Answers a rather confusing question.

No ones argueing over his “preferences” for look. People are criticizing the decision to make something to “impress” others vs making something he actually likes.
I extremely regret crafting Howler last summer when I was a necromancer main in a WvW guild. Now I have very little interest in ever really playing my necro ever again. I beat myself up mentally whenever I log in because I have that stupid warhorn, when I could have used the funds for that to make bifrost, which I could actually use on all the classes I play, not just the one that I lost interest in.
Taking a break from GW2 to play various
Nintendo games..
But no, people just don’t give a kitten , but if i was wearing a Sunrise ( i wouldn’t go for Twilight because it doesn’t fit for my guardian [personal thing] ), things would be different.
No, not really. People still wouldn’t care, because legendaries aren’t earned. They are bought. When people see titles, others know it was earned by skill other than farming gold or buying it with real money.
I’ve only been whispered compliments a handful of times in my years playing this game and they were not because of a single weapon. The people were complimenting my overall look because of its cohesiveness and uniqueness.
You won’t stand out simply by crafting a rare weapon. You have to complement that weapon with the rest of your outfit.
I think the only comment I got for my incinerator (except from friends) was :
“Oh right, you’re the idiot who refuses to use double incinerator!”
90% of the reason I customize is because i have to look at that toon for hours at a time, 3-4 days a week. I want something I am going to enjoy, or find funny, cute, cool, whatever. I could care a spit about what others think about it.
But then again, they’re probably spending 90% of their attention on their own toons. which means they aren’t looking at mine. Go figure.
Unless it’s like… Infinite light?, the original halloween set?, and perhaps fused weapon? No one is going to care and even less so comment cuz of a weapon.
Be sure to get the weapons YOU want! <- the secret to happiness in GW2
Also just a FYI with a legendary, even more so with twilight, sunrise, and eternity no one will care since they are pretty popular.
If your goal is to get comments from legit impressed people who think they are going to be as awesome from talking to you and perhaps befriending you (lol):
1. Make sure your armor choices look good and match well but are not from the same set, 2. Do not use a female toon, 3. use a more original look from what you’ve seen, 4. Be human, or Norn, (maybe silvari). 5. THEN compliment the set with a fitting or contrasting weapon.
^ If you are medium armor this will be a struggle for you.
Optional but can help impress noobs: Commander Tag, Tittle that takes effort but is not related to WvW.
Then maybe… just maybe… You’ll get people running up to you and being like “OMFG!”
( why no female toon): Although the armor is usually better on girls, because of so many guys being like “If I gotta stare at a character all day I want it to be a girl.” the in-game gender is pretty over saturated, and if your going for a “WOW” factor your not going to get it looking like every other half nude toon infront of the bank.
Personally I prefer the “WOW” factor coming from everyone else in the party being dead and being like “THIS IS NO WHIPE I WILL SIMPLY DO IT WITHOUT YOU!” Then proceed to out play the content they couldn’t alone… But that’s just me.
Again tho whats most important is YOU being pleased with what you have. (and imo Foe fires is actually a really cool sword btw <3 I have twilight along with other really cool GS and I still use mine from time to time. looks great with shattered wings )

No, it really wouldn’t be different if you had a Legendary gs. People don’t give a kitten about other people’s looks. Make something that makes you happy. Don’t make something that makes you think you’ll get attention from others. That’s your problem right there. Don’t care about them caring about your looks – because the fact is they won’t and they never will.
So long Treeface.

Eh, ok, thanks for the comments and sorry for anything. Didn’t mean to bother people.

the main idea people in this topic tried to communicate to you: you worry too much about other people’s opinions. if you craft your character’s gear looking for validation from others, you’ll always end up disappointed. just craft the weapon because you like it and want to see it, not because you think it will draw admirers and compliments.
example: don’t worry about whether the topic bothered anyone, and you don’t need to apologize for anything.

Sanity on an internet forum?! Blasphemy!
On a related note, THIS!
Real life – people insecure about their bodies/whatever
Video game – people insecure about their swords
well, that is bound to happen if your priorities are based on other peopleĀ“s values instead of your own. Take it as a rather low priced life lesson.
Every one can make the same weapon, what do you expect? Foefire essense is cooler than the legendary ones in my opinion.

It’s happened to me once, about Kamohoalai’i Kotaki. Most legendaries are just too common, as others have said, to be considered “prestige”. It’s like what happened to Arah armor now that people can buy the paths.
I’ve gotten compliments for my engie on her rifle. It’s worth all of 3 gold on the trading post. Lol.
ANet may give it to you.

Doing something for attention is never a good idea.
Yep ^
Best to just keep constantly updating/improving your character looks and usually that’ll suffice. I haven’t gotten very many compliments as of late simply b/c I’ve been too busy to log on much, but some people from time to time would notice some of my characters stand out a lil more.
Vibrant colors, uncommonly used armor combos, even play style can be a factor. But yea, look around and do something(s) that would make you stand out more. Just never do it for the intent of getting attention, do it because it appeals to you.
To be honest, even if you crafted a legendary greatsword, you wouldn’t likely get any more attention for it. At the very least, I see far more players prancing around with Twilight or Sunrise than I see with Foefire’s Essense, which would make the latter more of a novelty than the former, in my opinion.
However, the bottom line is that no matter how rare an item is, once you’ve seen it a few times, the novelty wears off. If people are not complimenting your weapon, it’s because it’s something they’ve seen enough times that it doesn’t move them any further to see it again.
One thing I have noticed, however, is that players are much more inclined to compliment you for coming up with a unique look, or an interesting combination of gear, than they are to compliment you for one single piece of gear on its own. Come up with something that’s unusual but that looks great, and you’ll get compliments no matter how prestigious your gear is or how long it took you to earn it.
My advice would be to think beyond the weapon, and come up with a cool look centered around that weapon or the theme you’re trying to carry across. Better yet, do it because you like it, and not because of how much attention you think you’ll get for it. Otherwise, all you’ll ever be doing is basing your characters around the tastes of others and not your own.
To me, legendaries and expensive weapons are sort of like the Dungeoneer title.
I’m only looking out for them when I’m in a PuG. They don’t necessarily mean the PuGs are going to be good or bad, but they mark a higher chance of someone who’s been in the game long enough to have learned a thing or two about dodging and jumping.
If I had a dollar for every time I changed my character’s look and walked around expecting someone to whisper “WHOA awesome look!” and got nothing, I’d be a rich man.
You should get skins that make you happy, not to impress other people. You will drive yourself crazy otherwise.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
Everyone and their mom have a legendary by now, so you’ll never EVER be praised for it. Go for an unique look, find some dumb looking weapon/combination, and you might get noticed.
