It’s an opportunity to see some actual developer input, which is more than can be said from an 8000 reply thread here on their own forums.

I don’t pretend to pay attention to a lot of gaming news sites till they have a article relevant to my interest…….but what is wrong with kotaku exactly?

I’ll bet nothing of real substance will be addressed. It’s less than a day to the whole patch, it’s just a PR puff piece. There’s no way anything substantive will be discussed or revealed, at least not in time for anyone to do anything about it.

The Gawker family of sites have something of a…reputation. Kotaku however is one of the better ones, second behind i09 in quality. That said, their developer Q&A sessions are driven entirely by site visitors. Kotaku is little more than a simple host. They’re generally informative and useful, I see little reason why this one would be any different.

At this point nothing will be changed, sure. But we might get some insight on the whys and the future.

Holy kitten you took the words out of my mind (particularly ‘substance’ ‘PR puff piece’.
This is exactly it, it’ll be another stupid PR spin and it’ll end up like an advertisement for Lost Shores. Arenanet disgusts me.

They disgust you for you know, trying to promote their game? This is their job, what feeds their families.

Seriously.

Spot on, it will be to late to change anything at that point, and if they go through with the patch the game will already have started to failcascade.

I imagine it’ll be a lot of "We’re excited to offer players the chance to – " sort of replies. Fluff. Nothing of consequence other than drumming up traffic for Kotaku.

If I could get a developer into a room one on one and ask them questions and get an honest answer out of them, free of PR concerns, that would be great. Unfortunately the only thing we can really do is actively complain about the move and withhold financing them and actively even using the game until they realize they’re making a big mistake. The reactions have basically been three: Good, Bad and Not too big a deal. The third group will only choose a side over time, once they finally finish up content and realize it’s now actively impacting them. It seems like ANet is basing a very large aspect of its core design on the complaints of Locust players, which as everyone should know, ruins MMOs during their early launch months. Some never recover.

Kotaku gets more traffic, Arenanet gets to advertise it to people that don’t play the game. If they did it on their own website, it would only reach people that have already paid for the game.

So, why do this at all? Gotcha, its advertisement, plain and simple. Not an actual Q&A session to deal with player concerns.

Advertisement is exactly it, but if that’s the sole reason it seems like its now a bad move. I imagine that they weren’t quite expecting this level of resistance to the announcement, and made the plans to do a Q&A a long time ago. Now it seems like any potential customers will be thrown right into the middle of all the vitriol ANet is getting.

Still though, even if it is just fluff, there might be some useful scraps let slip here and there.

We’re counting on you, Synitare, to ask those hard questions on our behalf. Like, what’s up with spitting on our faces with a straight up lie on a 5 year promise and acting like we’re supposed to like it?

Seriously, it would not have been as big a deal if they had added new items with the same stats and a slot for agony resistance for people who want to stack it for dungeon bragging rights.

I posted my questions. I don’t expect ANet to answer all of them, but seeing that Kotaku has invited their readers to ask ANet themselves about current and upcoming things about the game, I figured it would be a good chance to bring the ball to their court while they have the spotlight.
