I don’t know if LA is actually going to go up in flames but I have a theory: What if it gets temporarily destroyed because of what happened tech-wise during the LA Karka Event and maybe LA in its current form (for whatever reason) isn’t able to support large scale battles. Maybe ArenaNet needs to blow it up first and then we can have a battle in that war-torn setting to defend what’s left of it and then they can rebuild it? Once they rebuild it, then it will be rebuilt to host future battles there later on when the tech is in place to support it. My hope is that they aren’t done with one off style events. I know it’s a major point of contention, but I like the thrill of being in a place for something and being able to talk about it after wards, even years later as a nostalgia thing.

What do you guys think?

Firstly I sincerely hope they never do one-time events ever again. I was there for the whole of Lost Shores, I was able to fight the boss (well, stand in an overflow lagging so much I couldn’t move, disconnect, log into another one and find the event slightly further along) and I got rewards from the chest.

But it wasn’t fun, it was a lot of waiting around between things happening, unable to really do anything else in case something happened, and a lot of frustration with overflows and bugs and the sheer number of people all trying to pile into the same place for the same thing.

Yes I can tell people I was there, but it’s always in the context of telling people they didn’t miss much if they weren’t, and missing out is a small price to pay for not dealing with the frustration it caused.

The current system of events lasting for 2 weeks or a month, where players can do it in their own time within that, is a lot better IMO. Plus it means they can do harder bosses that can’t be defeated on the first try.

But to get back to your original point I don’t think the LA map is any different to any of the others as far as the tech goes.

It’s possible they’re going to destroy it and rebuild it (although I think it’s more likely we’ll stop the attack happening, and the actual fight will take place in Bloodtide or Gendarren) but it would purely be for storyline purposes. If they wanted to update the tech they could do that the same way they do other updates – work on a new version behind the scenes then upload it when it’s ready.

I don’t have a problem with one-time events in principle. You may miss them, but that’s ecaxclty what makes it so cool to have them, they are something special compared to the ever-repetitive rest of the game world.
It’s just not particularly clever to design them in such a way that you’ll end up with the majority of your playerbase in the same place at the same time. It’s inevitable you’ll run into technical limitations, and that’ll just spoil the fun for everyone.
The Karka Queen was quite disastrous in this regard. Let’s hope they learned something from that for Scarlets big day.

Or the lighthouse.

I don’t expect a one time event but I do hope a major impact to some parts of the town. a possible scenario.

1: after the update the bay area of the town is veiled by a force field simular to the one obscuring the nightmare tower. This is demonstrated in a video/instance when you first enter the town. Lady Kasmeer tries to stop it, but is (temporary) eliminated by Scarlet.

2: Ellen Kiel finds a way in and we get into the forcefield to see what Scarlet have done to that part of the town (e.g. damming it off, draining the water and do some redecorating) and we get to fight scarlet and her forces to start the final attack at the city.

3: During the living story chapter the forcefield stays on cause kasmeer is out and she is the onlyone who can stop it. outside the forcefield it is business as usual.

4: When the living story is over Kasmeer wakes up (or when she is eliminated permanently, someone else finds a way to take the forcefield down) and the redecorated part of town is a permanent addition..

This is just one out of many ways how it can be done. Another way is to open up new maps (e.g. the part of LA where the battle pits are).

Arise, opressed of Tyria!

I think you all are missing the point or I didn’t do a good enough job explaining. It’s probably the latter. I am saying I think they are going to destroy LA because the current tech behind the city can’t take big battles properly. They are using the Scarlet stuff to have a reason to destroy it so that LA can be used for huge scale battles in the future. If they rebuild it, they will rebuild it in a way that can handle massive stuff there is what I am saying.

I hope Lion’s Arch stays – it’s a great lag magnet to keep the lag out of other cities
