2-3 months between LS3 Chapters
Personal feelings about this:
How is it that Raids get there own exclusive team that apparently does not interrupt all other content, yet Living Story has to make sacrifices for PvP?
Is the Living Story team and the PvP team the same team?
If there is going to be a two-three month gap between chapters each chapter better be the size of half an expansion worth of content. New maps, new armor, new weapons, new story, new achievements. These chapters better be HUGE in content.
Why such long gaps between chapters? What have the devs been working on the last few months if they need even MORE time between chapters?
Overall i am really disappointed.
Interview from E3:
- No Living Story till the end of Summer (maybe).
- 2-3 months between Chapters.
- PvP content interrupts Living World content.
S. Also only one new fractal this year.
1….b-but MO said LW S3 was going to start on the Summer update
2…..no….
3 no no NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
S. We kinda knew this already, still pretty disappointing
I am frustrated, angry, disappointed. How in the blue blazes does PVP CONTENT interrupt PVE?! All of this was revealed a few minutes ago through french website. I was like “Dont worry ed, its probably a mis-translation or something” but noooooooooooe, I’m a dummy for believing that apparently. Anet you better prove me wrong that LW S3 wont be a disappointment. MMOinks kept saying that they will release episodes every 2-3 months I made a post about it, everyone was like “dont worry he is wrong or confusing it with something” well APPARENTLY he was right all along eh?! I want quality and QUANTITY. I’m sorry but you had what? more than 6 months to work on this and a team of 5 people deliver more content in LESS TIME that only 10% of the playerbase plays?! The cancellation of legendary weapons meant nothing. We still gonna have a content drought. I am very very very angry and dissapointed.

This is gut wrenching news for me. I have been waiting, like the rest of us for months for any new casual PvE content. You know, the content that the MAJORITY of us can play, that isn’t exclusive like PvP tournaments or Raids.
I have held out hope for years now, continuing to tell myself that, “Things will get better, they’re just finding their footing.” But no more, this is utterly incomprehensible how EVERY other game type has been getting so much attention and love recently and Living World gets thrown aside?!?! This is unacceptable and I won’t be logging into the game until Living World Season 3 drops. That is unless another game hasn’t enthralled me completely by then. I spend money weekly in the gem store to support ANet, but not anymore. I can’t keep getting strung along with my hopes only to have them crushed at every possible opportunity.
This is a sad day for me, and possibly my last day playing GW2. I really had such high hopes for this game, but ANet can’t seem to really deliver. Just a bunch of empty words from them.
And to those of you who think, “They said each chapter will have a higher quality.” Just look at their history of making promises. Each chapter will be as short as Season 2. Calling it now, nothing will change.

And “higher quality” is not the same as “more content”. These LS3 chapters could be just as small as previous chapters, just with more polish.
I think it was a mistake of them to let third party websites release this info first, hopefully a dev can clarify these statements before the riots start.
Well I imagine at the very least the summer quarterly update will begin July 12th or so after this pvp season. So perhaps that update is meant to tide us over until they release the first LS episode somewhere around the end of August? It’s seeming more and more likely that they’re taking the Blizzard route and timing LS to begin close to the time Legion is released for WoW. I wouldn’t have expected them to do that, but it’s seeming that way.
Hoping I’m wrong and they will both come out first couple weeks of July, the update and the episode.
I think when you have information like this, (has it been proven fact yet?), it’s probably good to have somekind of teaser or something showing what to expect in that episode. The fact that it’s worded as “possibly density” makes me think that quantity of content isn’t really a priority to them. Which is also discouraging.
I really wish ESports would take a hike. They seem to be putting way too much focus on pvp and raids, that’s for sure. Everything else has been quality of life improvements for systems, that half the time but or get changed anyway!
Is this the future strategy to market “content”? Locking LS progress behind 2-3 months schedule? I know this is mostly rumour, but if the aforementioned info is true these chapters better be bigger and much more filled with content than what we had with season 2. I don’t think PvErs which are attached to lore will be happy with such delayed chapter releases.
(edited by Valento.9852)
if it’s every 2-3 months I wont keep up if there’s too much content. some of that repeat for mastery point stuff was quite intense.
pve, raid, pvp, fractal, dungeon, world clearing, legendary questing.. Zapped!
… I don’t think PvErs which are attached to lore will approve such delayed chapter releases.
Is this so, do these who do not approve work for the company? Perhaps they can get together and propose a solution to management? Get executive backing and change the course to something that is more adequate?
Small content updates every two weeks was too fast, an expansion every year was not enough content, higher quality content updates every two or three months is too… I don’t know? Too “content progress locking”?
I clearly don’t want to be in Anet’s shoes :/

Sorry , but it is abundantly clear to everyone involved that content is lacking and the pacing is not good.
It’s prob best to wait for an actual official announcement and with details of what will be in each content drop. If each chapter is substantial, then I don’t see it as a problem – they will need the intervals to keep high quality, chunkier chapters going.
If each content drop is small, then there will be greater reason to voice objections
At this stage, we simply know nothing

You clearly haven’t read forums, or talked to people in-game, or frequent reddit. There are a lot of people which play this game solely because of story, and story-telling became a huge part of the game. Not everyone likes dailies routine, people actually want substantial and varied lore. It would strike me as surprising if their plan is as simple as that, without anything to fill the gaps between story releases. I am not saying they should go back to biweekly schedule, I think that was not a clever idea, but three months? I just hope these story chapters will be worth the time, both in quality and length, because we had a lot of cool stuff in season 1 with much shorter timeframe, and even in season 2.
Quality over quantity.
I had no love of those 2 week rapid release schedules. Some of like to take our time and even a month can be too little to catch up if one falls behind.
Also, if they’re going with the same model of getting it for free if you logon during the time, it’s only natural the time period is so long.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
They said that the episodes will be larger too. So this isn’t going to be content on par to one of S2’s episodes, which gave 3-5 story instances and a third of a new small map (if that) but larger than that.
How much larger is the question… I’m hoping for 3-4 times larger. They kitten well had enough time for that. If there’s enough content, the spacing won’t be that big of a deal – though people are overly used to the S1 design and want that maintained.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
I honestly don’t think the people that mainline pve have ANY right to complain what-so-ever. Yes I play pve, (no it’s not my main objective as I tend to prefer the pvp potential this game COULD be) but I am PvX with a pvp preference. So looking at things from a pvx point of view, …PvE (lore and story-line) is hands downed catered to. The PvE of this game consumes a VAST majority of anet’s dev’ time far over PvP ( WvW a far distant third and I feel bad for the few dev’s working on it ‘cuz they get all the **it without any praise for their efforts) Yet Anet is still hoping to make it’s game into an E-sports staple. They can’t because of how much effort they have to put into appeasing the PvE enthusiasts. SO for god’s sake, cut them some slack on their “timeline” we’ll all keep farming for the stuff we need regardless of when “next chapter” comes out because no one could possibly get all the stuff needed for the next “shiny” faster than they can create it!
Honestly, I’m fine with content every 2-3 months. I was suggesting that when they had the high hopes of “content every 2 weeks”. It wasn’t going to do well, and it didn’t.
So now it’ll be:
release content that should last the AVERAGE (because some players will race through it) player 2-3 months.
Work on next content patch meanwhile in that time.
release next patch and continue cycle (barring dealing with end of year holidays which may or may not increase patch cycles).
I don’t have the statistics, but I’m willing to bet PVE players are far more than PVP players. If you were a dev, would you not want to focus on your core playerbase?
I think the focus on pvp and leagues winds up leading to too much pressure attempting to “balance” things, which winds up being a never-ending cycle of reworks that winds up hindering development.
I think the constant reworks and balancing issues are also hurting Esports more than their time spent on PVP, which is a separate dev group anyway.
Personally, I think they need a new style of match that doesn’t rely on bunkering caps and cc-chaining.
I’ve never been a huge fan of the cap system anyway. It feels like it makes it less about combat to me and more about rotation strategy.
In some matches, if you’re responsible for back-capping, you may not even engage in that much combat, which doesn’t feel like pvp so much as wvw to me.
But anyway, this is going off on a tangent now.
I hope it’s not content you have to stretch by replaying to get achievement points. That is why I didn’t like season 2. Hope they bring some awesome mapwide events like Season 1.

Not everyone is happy to jump into the collect all you need for the next shiny because that’s all that is available crowd. The absolute snails pace at which content is released including the limited and mostly dysfunctional HoT expansion is a joke. If they want GW2 to have a future they best step it up and add a sheep ton more development because the tiny pr moves and PvP tournament busy work will simply not keep it alive. This was the best MMO on line but is slowly degrading and the lack of real volume of PvE content is a serious bloody issue. I have barely logged in and most of our guild is the same, we simple can’t keep grinding out the same bloody boring content.
Now we have to contend with the summer vacations, etc. and this game has had nothing of consequence PvE wise since the HoT fix patch and release of all world gliding, and guess what…it shows.
We need some follow up communication, plans for the future and a clear end point for when the next….“Real” expansion of content and story line lands. Don’t for a minute think that they have nothing to worry about because MMO’s are on the decline because many players have jumped to moba’s, rpg’s and other game styles due to shear boredom.
We gave them money supported them now it’s time to give the majority what they want, PvE content with a purpose, deep story line and a real reason to stay not artificial gem store fluff!
Far and away more players play PVE than any other format, and it should be the main focus of development time. Lots of slack has been given too, and poor decisions, bad/no communication, and seemingly shady cash grab type situations have had an impact on that. In my mind it is fast approaching time to put up or shut up. If I didn’t care about this game and wasn’t a player for 10+ years I wouldn’t care. I’m here saying such things because I do, and want to see the ship righted.
So basically here’s the question for you Anet, do you want this to be a PvE game or a PvP; because you have proven inability to do both so make a choice and focus it already. You’ll have big disappointments on both sides but just make a choice, make it official and let the losing side know so we can find something more to our preference in-stead of string us along with half-@$$ stuff. It’s ticking us all off now. after 3 year’s you could have expanded the pvp to be a lot more than the joke-one-game-style-few maps feces it is( I mean, for real, look at any MMOFPS and you could take .1% of the game objective variations and have more variation that the pvp in this game with at least twice as many maps to play them on ) . And after 3 years you could have explored a great amount of the world and LS than you have. Choose already, because you are sucking at both instead of excelling at one.
While i can understand that they dont want to do every 2 weeks….
This is another case of going from one extreme to the other. Granted we’ve yet to see just how much this extreme case has by comparison. If it has equal content to the previous releases but better quality then sure fine, keep at it. If it has less…. then just stop now and use the system that wasn’t broken instead of trying to redefine the wheel again.
It’s actually sad when the constant re-shaping of the wheel is causing more problems and more drought than solving what it’s supposed to.
It depends on the size of each chapter. LWS1 or 2 chapter length won’t cut it with a 2-3 month release cycle but if we get 3 times the length, I think that’ll be acceptable. Plus it doesn’t mean we won’t keep seeing these micro events like we’ve been having in between chapters.
RIP City of Heroes
As I said, the chapters will have to live up to the expectations or else this won’t end well. It will revolve mostly around how they’ll structure the story releases. PvE crowd couldn’t care less about PvP seasons.
What I don’t understand is people were complaining that raids were getting so much high quality content, and that is one release every 4 months. We told them that those release were HoT content spread out over time. Now that they are getting the same cadence that they praised before with raids (and even much much faster at a chapter per 2 months) it is “too slow” and “locking content”. ANET can never win.
It’s quite simple why they will be doing a 2-3 month release schedule. PvP leagues. Anyone who has played in them knows all to well how the queue times get really bad the higher up you climb in the league. So ANet will not want a distraction from the league. After all they want ESports.

Raids were praised because they were built designed and developed by a 6 man team.
LS has 70 people working on it… the fact that it is now being announced as the same release cadence is not acceptable.
You’re comparing a single apple tree that produces a lot of fruit to a multi-million dollar orange cooperation that can’t even seem to produce a single orange.
Very good idea. Good Job Anet!! I requested for it. Thank You for listen!!! It is good idea, because everybody has a chance to make chapters and small space between epizodes is very good.

That’s because when players read “living story”, they already gave up on expecting :
- new map
- boss needing weeks of balance to challenge a 10 man team
- new mob design on each map
- new skins
- etc.
What player expect when they read “living story” is a lore development that will lead them to uncover mystery that bother them since a while or help them focus on a new direction in the game. In this regard, I know that a lot of people hated the LS1 but that was a content that was really worth it’s name of “living story”. Peoples are looking for solo content with a background that make sense in the current GW2. (sure it would be cool to see new maps but nobody expect more than 2 map for the whole LS3 and 1/4th of map every 3 month with an average entertainment duration of 40 minute, the first time you do it, is bound to be disappointing)
NB.: Yeah I’m generous with 40 minutes
Sorry , but it is abundantly clear to everyone involved that content is lacking and the pacing is not good.
Content is always lacking because content takes a lot of time to make and only little time to play through.

Really? Well aware it takes time to make content, but we see what the raids team can pull off, then it leaves some people scratching their heads.
It depends on content quality. If it’s going to look like 1-2 LS2 chapters then I’d be completly dissapointed, but if they released new map like DT or SW every 3 months (not necessarily with meta events like them, just with even something small going on and have story take place there) and like armour set, few achievments, I’d be more than happy.

I’m not sure what you mean… LS2 introduced both DT and SW in map chunks every 2-3 weeks.
Yet you say you don’t want it like LS2 and you want them to release a new map every 3 months… That is just a slower less content filled version of LS2…
That’s exactly the opposite of what I want.
For me a big content dump then 2-3 months wait is not good. Maybe a story arc that takes 2 months with bi-weekly releases could work with the final month a new area (I doubt it), event or instance that stays in the game. I am really unsure what to expect but as usual will need to wait and see.
This is the absolute wrong approach, and a ridiculous statement to make during an interview. What it translates to for most is that we will likely see 3 to 4 chapters of the LS which based on this is another year of thumb twiddling, and that is somehow supposed to keep us here? Stop with the kitten ed raid / fractal content that a very small minority plays and concentrate on real out world content. Push out world content and do it immediately, stop tweaking builds to satisfy one section of players and put all your resources into content before it’s too bloody late!
Also while I’m here, where the heck is Mike O in all this, where’s the I’ll communicate more than ever before mantra you spewed after CJ left? I am so sick and tired of the absolute failure on Anet’s part to keep their base involved in the game’s future and the overall abysmal pace of development due to jumbled priorities and lack of direction. I only hope somebody at NCSoft sees how pathetically under staffed this game is and how starved for content the player base is that they actually start to shake things up! Content folks, content for all is what the player base wants…more and more kitten ed content! It is just that bloody simple!!!!

I’d love to see a quote about LS having 70 people working on it. Because I don’t believe that’s the case. The new expansion had, last we heard, 70 people working on it, but I’ve not seen numbers on how many people are working on it.
We did know that at one point, there was a 20 man team.
Let’s keep in mind though that the LS wasn’t just coming out with instances like raids. LS also provided us with Drytop and the Silverwastes, which are both maps, in addition to instances.
So yeah, a five or six man team doing three instances with two or three bosses each is a lot less work than the living story chapters we’ve seen so far.
I don’t even know why you’d think to compare them. And I don’t know where you got that 70 number from but I’m relatively sure it’s not correct.
Yeah ESports will stop all PvE content to make sure the PvP leagues have an uptake. What BS.

Just thought I would pop in the forums and make a quick response here:
First question- I am still trying to wrap my mind around the ‘fact’ alot of gamers are having such a knee jerk reaction to an ‘interview’ from someone or something called ‘Aurora.net’? Is this interview even verified as an Arenanet source? Please do correct me in my ignorance.
Second question: Didn’t we all want a little nibblet of information concerning a ‘cycle’ of when LS updates would be? You can’t please everyone all the time, but a small bit of VERIFIED information is always welcomed.
And finally- I love this game. I purchased HOT when it released- I AM getting my monies worth of entertainment for my $100./ I am far from rich-lol- but I do think I have invested in a fun, quality game, that continues to hold my attention.
So keep the updates coming ANet, I will be awaiting the goodies when they are ready to be presented to me.
I have a pet- I am a Ranger.
I have Avatar of Balthazar- I am a Dervish.

Luckily for PvE players, such as myself, this is already the case.

I hope for the same. I felt that LS1 suffered due to its pace (and writing). LS2 due to certain design/writing decisions. I really hope that a slower release schedule means that Anet has learned from past mistakes (IMO) and is giving themselves time to incorporate those lessons into future releases.
I’d rather have a release that I want to replay (on main and alts) every ten weeks than one that convinces me to break from the game for the remainder of the season.

Fractal content have actually impressively wide coverage, ~90% of players did at least one fractal. Raid auditory is a lot smaller tho.

Hmm ok well there we have it….
Well from that same summary we know the raid team was 6 people and from the legendary cancellation we know the legendary team was 5 people. That leaves 109 people between LS, PvP, WvW, and Fractals.
I think it is safe to say no one, or nearly no one is working on PvP, based on how little has been done, and how terrible the balance is. WvW has seen a lot of sizeable updates recently, they probably have a good chunk. Fractals have seen some updates and supposedly more are coming.
So from that 114 (legendary team got added back to live team) I would probably put the breakdown at 40 WvW, 50 LS, 10 PvP and 10 Fractals.
They certainly haven’t been putting out PvP, Fractal, or LS content, so no idea what they are working on that they still need 2-3 months between releases.
At least the raid team is doing well.
Well, this will be a make or break for me.
Ive waited long enough and become highly impatient for new story and pve content that isnt tied to raiding, and content that isnt e-sport related of any kind.
If it turns out to be a mild joke of content with no substance then I am “gone” for good GW2 has already gone to hell for me at this point, what remains of my interest is purely based on how much quantity we can expect, either this will be some kind of micro-expansion sized content with an entierly “full” new zone, and at least 4 episodes out of 12 of a major living story update, or…
It will be a disasterously pathetic addition with very little content pretending to call it quantity and quality and people will leave in droves.
And not come back.
A-net, im begging you at this point, please, give the E-sport thinga rest, nobody cares, raiding is also not healthy for this games longevity, I get that your trying to attract a new audience but it ISNT working.
Just give up on both and stop trying, just stop, please?
Neither of these things, are what made GW2 great, infact, it was the fact GW2 at launch tried VERY hard to stray as FAR as possible from those things, that made it great.
If there are going to be such huge time gaps between each chapter then they should be bigger imo.

It should be a LOT bigger, but do you really believe without a doubt, knowing ANet’s track record for making promises that this will be so?
If so, and you truly believe they will finally stay true to their word, then kudos to you for having that kind of unwavering faith in a company that has continually let down their playerbase.
But I feel that you know darn well exactly what to expect, a portion of a zone and 4 story instances, the same size as a Season 2 Living World chapter, but just 2 – 3 months apart cause they have decided that they must please all playerbases within the game equally.
Prepare to be disappointed people, calling it right now.

I said they should be bigger but I never believed Anet would actually deliver on that.
They wouldn’t even break any promise either since they never said that S3 chapters will be bigger. They only stated their will be an “increase in quality”, which is so vague it could mean anything or nothing. For all we know it could simply mean less bugs/more stable and nothing else.
