I’m a level 56 ranger and decided to look at my slot skills panel (which I haven’t looked at since about 45 or so) and realize I have no desire to even spend the 56 extra skill points I’ve accumulated so far. I’ve basically gotten all the ones I wanted quite a while back and feel are useful, everything else feels situational and a waste of skill points. I guess I miss making decisions on picking abilities that look equally awesome and useful. I do get why it was designed this way; excessive abilities aren’t always the better idea but I somehow feel there needs to be more sense of character progression, which is a really fundamental part of RPGs and what makes them so compelling so alot of players, right?

If you think at level 56 there’s a lack of character progression; I’ve got bad news for you when you hit 80.

You’d be surprised at how useful the situational abilities are.

Also, if you don’t want to spend them, save them. My thief has over 100 waiting till I hit 80.

As a fellow ranger player, I feel we’ve got it worse than other professions. Spirits are a missed opportunity – imagine how much you’d put into buying them up if unleashing a full suite of spirits significantly changed the feel of the combat.

Most shouts are also unappealing. One that tells your pet to tank, when that’s what they do anyway??

I’ve had a look at the thief skills and they seem to hint at a much wider variety of playstyles.

Focksbot,

i agree with you about the spirits, 20% chance of them being helpful doesnt inspire their use, a real shame.

i found the highest utility tier for ranger to be the least worthy of any class,
the elites (if you are a sylvari ranger, the cultural skills make you a “turret ranger”, which is a nice playstyle) make up for it a little but still, i have found that i dont want or need any of the tier 3 utility skills other than Signet of the Wild.

edit: i also use consumable turret spawners which are cheap and handy.

The spirits are actually really useful. 20% does not sound like a lot but they actually provide a significant amount of uptime.

My biggest issues with the spirits are
1. They do not move (unless traited).
2. 60 seconds to plop them down again. Not such a big deal if they moved BUT….
3. The die if you sneeze on them. They are so rediculously fragile that even the slightest of AOE will obliterate them. Dead spirits are of no use.
