So I’ve just started to play this game after a two and some change years of forgetting I had it. (Hey, don’t look at me, it’s easy to do so when a game’s not a constant drain on your funds!)

Since I wasn’t too high up in level (20-ish) I cleaned out my characters and started fresh. Well, as fresh as a shared bank / currency system allows. Anyhoo, so far I’ve bounced around a few characters and have had a lot of fun.

Asura Ranger – Chapter One Complete
Charr Necromancer – Chapter One Complete
Human Engineer – Chapter Two Complete
Sylvari Warrior – Chapter One Complete

That leaves my last slot for a Norn character, and for the life of me, I can’t decide between Elementalist or Mesmer. Why one of them? I absolutely LOVE Norn cutural light armor. Even if it’s not the best statted set, it’s the best looking for me for transmogging.

So, what should I put in the last slot and why?

Oh for the love of little green tomatoes…

Mesmer if you are a heart, Elementalist if you are a diamond.

I would try and get your oldest character back so you don’t miss out on 2 years’ worth of character birthday gifts. Otherwise, it’s all up to your personal preference. I like playing mesmer more since I really enjoy the utility and elementalists can’t use swords or shields.

I personally love Mesmer as a PvP/dueling class, but would pick Ele as an open world PvE profession. Boon sharing with others, healing, mobility, great AoE damage, good sustain.

It essentially comes down to your own decision. And if you want both, you can buy an additional character slot from the gem store. Those are discounted from time to time, too (will probably be someday this month, there are daily sales going on right now) if you find them too expensive.

Yeah, they’re not too bad, might buy a couple when I save up enough coin for a big gem buy. But still, gotta work with what I have right now.

PvE is definitely my main focus, I indulge in sPvP only when my fancy really desires it, and WvW when I’m in a fun mood. No Heart of Thorns yet either, I’m kinda waiting ’till I actually have a capped character before getting it, experience the game “properly” first, ya know?

Sarcastically, mesmer if you found levelling up too fast, elementalist if you found yourself thinking “I wish I died more often after level 50”.

Truth is, though, they are both good and fun, but in different ways. You should experiment with what works best for you…

Flip a coin: heads, it’s elementalist; tails, it’s mesmer.

Buy more slots and have them both! It is always good to have more character slots and taste all the ingame professions.

mesmer is more support oriented in general I guess
ele can be support oriented and will be more healer (auramcner) but is generally more directed towards DPS or AOE DPS

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

That’s a bit of a confusing statement as they are both equally supportive, they just have different ways of achieving that. Mesmer is mainly offensive support, improving DPS of people around them. Elementalist is mainly defensive support, providing healing and boons group-wide. They both have a flipside, where ele is the most powerful AoE DPS in the game, and mesmer has superior mobility and Crowd Control abilities. Both styles for each profession are viable in one gamemode or the other.

Yannir for males. (guard,thief,war,ele)
Sonya for females. (necro,rev,ranger,mes,engi)
All classes lvl 80.
