Q:

I only have one account so laurels are pretty valuable. Which items should I avoid buying from the laurel merchant?

Well, dont buy any of the crafting bags but the tier 6 one, believe its called heavy?

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

There’s prob many people with better advice than me but I didn’t know laurels were scarce and I kept buying harvest tools from that npc in the pvp Trading area. Later I decided it was to much of a pain to craft ascended even after lvling up crafts so I needed my laurels to buy the jewelry at the EotM npc. Was mad at myself for spending them. Thought they had no use for me.

I also post on guildwars2guru.

Don’t waste money on the gear boxes (2 Pieces of Class Gear). I also wouldn’t bother with using laurels for Obsidian Shards, dyes, gathering tools, or letters of commendation. The crafting bags can be a good purchase, especially Heavy Crafting Bags.

I bought ascended items for most of my characters with laurels (just because I didn’t need anything else). So, if you end up with laurels to spare and want to get ascended accessories for your character(s), you can do that. Just don’t buy the ones you can get for Guild Commendations; use the Guild Commendations for those, but use laurels for your amulets.

I personally wouldn’t use laurels for the wvw blueprints or crafting starter kits.

The rest is up to you.

Items to avoid
Ascended Accessories – get them from the Guild Vendor instead
Starter Kits
WvW Blueprints
Crafting Bags – The Heavy one is the best “profit per laurel” but do not bother with any of the other ones

In other words the amulets and Rings (unless you are big into Fractals) should probably be your priority. You also need some for ascended recipes
After that get any of the special skins or minis you want. The value of those are determined by you

If you’re going to buy an amulet get it from the WvW laurel vendor which costs 20 laurels and 250 honor badges you save 10 laurels.

^ This. Almost forgot about that

WvW Laurel Vendor for Amulets

Guild Vendor for Accessories (They cost Commendations instead of Ectos)

If you plan on doing a lot of Fractals you may want to try your luck with them dropping randomly… Some people have more Ascended Rings than they know what to with

I believe you can do the same with rings as well if you don’t want to run fractals.

For ascended accessories, buy those from the laurel vendor in WvW

The laurel costs are less because you pay part of the cost with WvW currency. The thing is, even if you HATE WvW with a burning passion, you still get medals from AP chests, so once you’ve played long enough to actually need ascended accessories, you’ll have enough for a couple accessories.

I don’t recommend spending laurels on rings ever. Unless you absolutely cannot stand fractals, running low level fractals a few times gets you way more than enough tokens to buy nearly any ring you want. And the fractal system is changing soon, so it’ll be easy to do a few quick lower level runs once the update drops in a couple months.

As others have mentioned, the heavy crafting bags are the best Lauel->gold conversion. To the point where you come out ahead cashing in the materials and buying any of the purchasable laurel rewards. For example, if you want the guild commendation, you’re better of buying the 16 heavy crafting bags, selling the included mats on the TP and then buying letters of recommendations with gold from the guild vendor.

So the best things to spend your laurels on are either the top tier crafting mat bags, or any of the exclusive rewards you may want that you can’t get elsewhere. Old LS prizes, the cat mini if you’re into that kind of thing, etc.

Rings from Fractals, Accessories from the WvW vendor/guild vendor, and the Amulet is probably the thing you want to straight-up buy from the laurel vendor since good Amulets are the hardest to get.

With the ability to swap stats on ascended armor/weapons by using the mystic forge, you can avoid buying the ascended recipes if you want.

This is pretty much the only thing I spend laurels on now. I used to buy dyes with it to either open or sell until they chopped it down from 10 unidentified dyes for 5 laurels to 1. Talk about lame…

After TP fees T6 crafting bags are roughly worth 90 silver each, on average.

It depends on your preferences. In the beginning everybody horded laurels for ascended accessories. I bought the puppy. And early on I bought gear before I made it to the temples on my first character, but this was during the first few months of laurels.

But it would be easier to ask what is worth buying than asking the opposite.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

1) If possible don’t buy rings and accessories with laurel. Easier to get rings from Fractals and Earings from commendations
2) Don’t buy Amulet from the normal vendor use the WvW vendor to save some laurels
3) You can transfer laurel into gold. The best way to do that is with Heavy Crafting Bags. Each laurel transfer that way will give you around 1 gold. Each a list of other item that give or save you gold. They are all not worth it compare to the bags.
- Mystic Binding Agenet : 25 silver per laurel
- Any gear of box : between 60 and 10 silver per laurel
- Unindentified dye : 25 silver per laurel
- All other crafting bags except the heavy : At best it’s 60 silver per laurel
- Letter of Influence : 25 silver per laurel
4) Sickle and Booster can be nice to have, but there is better option than those.
5) Obsidian shards are super easy to get both with Karma and in SW.
