Laurels for Gems
Probably because they are designed, weighted, and balanced to be a time gate.
I think laurels for gems would be awesome, and give me something to spend my laurels on.

I think the OP is suggesting it being the other way round and that they buy laurels using gems.

You can already convert laurels to gems:
- Buy Heavy Crafting bags and sell all the contents on the TP at aggressive prices.
- Use the funds you generate to buy as many gems as possible.
At current market prices, 100 laurels would get you ~78 gold (after fees), which would yield about 270 gems (at current exchange rates).

That was my impression, too.
As others have stated, I doubt that is going to happen — ANet seems to want laurels to be something earned via loyalty rewards alone and 20/month for just logging in seems pretty good, especially since you can also choose to get 20 more from the 28-day Chest of Loyalty
you get 35/month for logging in (not just 20) and 20 more form the 28th login chest
so 55 instead of 40 per month

Then you could just put all the stuff the laurel merchant has into gem store – no thank you.
People would surely rather have the cosmetic items staying special (as much as anything is still special after 4 years) and i personally am very much against having gears (amulets etc) in gem store. Not having gears in gemstore is one of the things that makes GW2 different from and better than alot of other games.
