Laurels suggestion
Or just remove the unique aspect entirely.
Contact customer support, they should refund it for you.
I’d like to take a moment to point out maybe there needs to be a “common sense check” popup “You are buying another Unique item you already own. You cannot equip two Unique items at the same time. Are you sure?”
Yep that would really help. I’d vote for that.
Or just remove the unique aspect entirely.
I’d like to see more “unique” things like special alt-color weapons/armor dropped by major events. We already have a few items only dropped during some events, just punch it up a bit.
Tobias, “unique” in this instance is being used to describe something that you can only equip one of, so it only applies to things like rings or trinkets.
I’d like to point out that you can give the secondary item to a different character and use it there. But this is an ongoing issue that should have been addressed long ago.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
I agree Guhracie. This is one issue that could have and should have been addressed ages ago, even if it’s just to cut down on service tickets.
You can give it to another character.
At least now when you accidentally buy a second trinket, its not soulbound to your character. You can always try to send in a ticket to Anet about it – they have refunded people in the past because of obvious reasons.
They could put in a system that allows you to sell it back to the vendor within a certain time frame.
Or a system similar to the Red writing when an item is not usable by your class/race, something like “You already have this item equipped”

Thanks, I know what it means. I was saying, it’d be nice if these things weren’t the ONLY things which had that tag, and there was more exposure to it.
Though the best solution short of getting rid of that tag, is the “idiot note dialogue box” I mentioned above. Sort of like the kind you get with “would you like to format this drive?”.
. . . it might cut down on events like this one, but I must admit I’m not too optimistic on that.
This, among others, is a QoL tool-tip that needs an urgent change …

It couldn’t really apply to armor, since there are no duplicate armor pieces, and it would really only apply to people who dual wield daggers, swords, pistols or axes for weapons. That does cover a fair bit of ground, so it seems like it holds potential, but I’d like to see them clarify the tag first. At the very least it should be designated “Unique-equipped” or, as you suggested, have the “verify” pop-up. Sorry I missed that you had demonstrated knowledge of the tag, though! That’s totally on me.

First, I like the OP idea. A lot like refunding a legendary you buy in MH for the odin marks any time you want to buy/try something different.
Second, I tried this, and asked very nicely, to which I have no proof, I suppose, but was told they can’t do that sort of thing. I was a little bit sad, but moved on.
Conversely, before the MH launch, I had bought a multi-hero pack that included Torch, who wasn’t ready for release, and anyone who bought the pack would get him when it was ready. Within days of launch, they introduced another multi-hero pack which I was ‘far’ more interested in (which didn’t include Torch), and they let anyone that had purchased a pre-order multi-hero pack switch to that pack, if they wanted to.
When Torch was launched, they gave me Torch, which I wasn’t entitled to.
I submitted a ticket, letting them know I had received it erroneously, and they said, “Our bad, but go ahead and keep him, on the house.” In fact, I’ve had lots of little “oh shoot, if I had know you were going to B, I would never have done A, so can I switch it for B” moments, and they always come through for me.
I sure love this game, but:
1. My old shorts.
2. My old running animation.
3. Mini-pets that can’t swim.
4. What they call ‘collaborative development’.
Really gets under my skin (or sadly over my skin, in some cases). So far, most everything else is great, but sometimes enough small philosophical things get me grumpy enough.
Jesuse thanks for the information, I wanted to buy 2 same ascended accessory.
They should really fix that ASAP. Or they probably dont want to, because their support wont have any jobs to do so they would get fire. Those misleading information keeps their work alive.
Anet Patch Notes Every Patch: We updated seven thousand skill tooltips. We have updated none of the bugged achivements, mislabels, non-intuitive purchaseable items or otherwise anything actually relevant. Have a good day.
I love them for having an actually good and human Support/Refund policy, but… well, wouldn’t it save them time to just. Fix things? So they don’t have to actually refund people?

Yea tool-tips. They just rename and type more words.
That is the easiest job ever… You can do that in 5min rename few skills.
I was victimized by this as well last week.
But Like’s been suggested. I’m going to stash it for another character and I’ve learned my lesson.
There really does need to be some form of warning about uniques, for those of us whom do not pay attention to, or are too dense to grasp the concept of “Unique”.
I’d be cool with a little Pop-up at purchase that says in big, bold, red letters. “This item is unique. You can only equip one. Are you sure you want to buy this?” Because I fall into the latter of my two categories. >__o¿
I don’t raid, I barely fractal, and I suck beyond words at PvP and WvW.
But I try, and that’s what counts.
