As it stands now, you can get leather from:

  • Bags, very rarely
  • Salvaging Medium Armor

T6 leather is beyond ridiculous in price right now (whereas T6 cloth is basically free) and you still need leather to craft light and heavy armors.

I do think a tweak is needed somewhere. Currently leather is also needed for Guild Halls and every precursor collection as part of the legendary inscription and sometimes (like CHuka) part of the second collection – eg thick string.

I think they need to either improve the salvage return rate or reduce the amount of thick leather per square. Atm 4 per square is too excessive. Reducing to 3 at least should help. For one collection item in the Chuka precursor to require 1225 thick leather is perhaps a bit ambitious as a mat sink.

Whilst the sting in Guild Hall requirements is less as the contribution is spread across members, it’s another major use of a fundamental material.

I’m all for mat sinks, but leather feels most out of sync when compared to other fundamental resources.

People underestimate how many T5 materials go through the TP. I can put in buy orders for 63K silk scraps and it’s filled within hours. The same can be said for the buy orders for 42K thick leather scraps.

Is T6 leather at peak prices more “ridiculous” now? Or was it more “ridiculous” when it was at vendor price?

As Ayrilana says, there’s plenty of leather available — people are just willing to pay more for it. As mtpelion says, there are already plenty of existing sources; they just aren’t in specific spots on the map.

It’s not clear that there’s an urgent issue that requires adding new sources and/or changing salvaging mechanics. If it turns out that the leather supply needs some love, I’d rather see ANet tweak guild hall/scribing and crafting requirements, to reduce pressure on demand.

Not seeing a problem when even paltry WvW loot has gotten me crafting disciplines to 500, ascended armor sets on several characters, and probably ten to fifteen stacks of the stuff on my characters and bank.

It drove up ascended armor in price to buy, but if you play the game, click some lootbags, and salvage stuff, you’ll have plenty in time.
