Hello dev Team, im really amazed about the fact how little nice leather sets are aviable compared to heavy or light armor. I dont even play a class which wears this armor, but i do feel very sorry for them and would suggest, that you would put a little more love into it.

noooo i’d say you’re mistaken. Leather definitely has many more, much nicer looking sets than plate. Light armour definitely has the edge, though

(which makes sense, because light armour is essentially just clothing, and leather reinforced clothing. As armour gets heavier, style must be sacrificed for actual function)

It’s all a matter of personal preference.

I personally think medium armor skins overall have the best options and that when playing with heavy/light armor classes, my options are very limited if I don’t want to look hideous.

It’s not that the individual pieces don’t look nice. Many are beautifully detailed. The problem is that there is little variation in the “silhouette”. The overall form as seen from a distance. If you have 5 medium armors standing next to each other, from a few feet away its long coat 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Its difficult to get an look that’s distinctive if that look is identical from a few feet away to almost every other medium armor.

It’s not a matter of sexy imho. It’s a matter of extremely limited choice if you are not into coats. 99% of leather armor pieces are coats or long jackets, of which a very limited amount do not make you look like a pole tent from behind because the devs wanted to avoid clipping in the laziest way possible. . Just give us CHEST armor , not a freaking duster all the time.

i thought by “leather” you meant the “medium” weight armours in general.
“cloth” “leather” and “plate” are quite common terms for the usual 3 weight classes in MMOs, (those were also the terms used in GW1 iirc) sorry for the confusion!

There are definitely more long coats than any other style among the medium armours (for both male and female character) but there are other options available and you can do some interesting things with them by mixing and matching. Remember too that adding or hiding gloves and shoulders (and sometimes helms) can make a big difference in how an outfit looks.

Here’s some examples of ones which don’t have a long coat (for simplicity I kept it to ones that apply to both male and female models, females have a few extra options like the Krytan and Sneakthief coats):

  • Priory
  • Vigil
  • Illustrious (ascended)
  • Studded
  • Duelist
  • Viper
  • Striders
  • Glorious

To a lesser extent there’s also these, which don’t completely remove it but IMO are less noticeable, because it’s either not as long or only down the back:

  • Heritage
  • Carapace
  • Outlaw
  • Ascalonian Sentry
  • Armor of Koda

It’s definitely possible to make revealing outfits on human/norn/sylvari female characters using medium armor, especially if you have the Viper skirt (which is just a mini skirt).

It’s not really possible to get something revealing on males or charr and asura (who all use the male models) but IMO (speaking as a straight woman) it is possible to make a “sexy”/attractive outfit, if you bear in mind that sexy doesn’t have to be revealing.

That’s the one area I’d most like to see some improvement if I’m honest (again speaking as a straight woman) – it’s so frustrating trying to make an outfit for a male character that doesn’t cover them completely. I don’t even mean something “sexy” just bare arms would be nice.

For example here’s what I’m planning for my engineer. It’s not supposed to be ‘sexy’ but it is very different from the typical long coat & tons of layers look of medium armour.

(I’m using the ascended leggings because I’m planning to make at least 1 set anyway and I like the pattern down the side, but really any relatively plain trousers would work.)

Strider’s armour on female human, norn and sylvari is gorgeous.

I don’t like showing flesh either- to me it doesn’t make sense to wear armour and have the most vulnerable areas on show. So something detailed, form hugging but covers the body is totally up my street.

Mixing and matching is the other option. Things get easier once you have a few “not-trenchcoat” tops. There are lots of wonderful looking leggings that you don’t see half of the time because of the knee-length tops.

Problem I encountered was, that even if you have a “non-trenchcoat” top, the waste line for most pants doesn’t match nicely. Showing your belly button or just really simple details with 0% effort put into it since they were gonna be hidden anyways.

Mist Walker (except for shoulders they don’t really match), Viper (boots are awesome and go with anything), Stalwart, emblazoned helmet (for the cool ninja look sneakthief is alright but too simple for my taste) are great, and on female players there’s a nice set of leather pants and good skirts too ^_^

If by sexy/good you mean ‘shows skin’, then yes, leather does have only a few choices – Krytan top, Viper skirt + a number of racial armors. However if you think that ‘good and sexy’ can mean other things, then leather has a number of choices. With that said, trench coats ARE overabundant.

Almost all are female armor though. Male medium has a hard time finding “sexy” armor. Long coats from here to the horizon with hardly a break.

I think “there is no good/sexy leather armor” is due to:
*ingame lighting
*poor quality wiki pictures (someone recently updated them!)
*pictures don’t do justice for many of the skins, movement brings them to life
*dye choice (I love chocolate dye! )
*armor choice itself, look at some of the more basic sets not new shinyglowypretty

https://youtu.be/GJNOsVJ49Pg

wow, watched the vid @1080 and still its grainy. Ingame its 100% better.
Find the gear pieces that overall have a decent look together, then check them out ingame with a decent light source. Then experiment with dyes (NOT SHADOW &/or ABYSS DYES). You will be genuinely surprised.

yeah, I agree with flesh wound and Havok… the medium armor is dominated by long coats… I’d much prefer more variations of the human T1, duelist and studded armor tho, I think they’re the perfect length haha

I personally love the strider/viper top with aetherblade leggings because they just look classy (and not trench coats)

You just gotta know what to mix and match to avoid the constant trench coats. Sadly, most of the good stuff is in the gem store, so you gotta buy it if you want more non trench coat varieties.

I personally went with a kind of steampunk feel on my Ranger. Used to have a neat tribal set up on her with Krytan gloves and boots, duelist top, vigil leggings, and avian pauldrons, but got tired of that after awhile.

Just want to highlight this because I think it’s a really important point.

I actually like a lot of the dark dyes, including Abyss, I think they can look great. But if you want the overall outfit to look good you need to consider what looks good on that skin/character and some skins only look good with bright or contrasting dyes.

My pet hate is the medium ascended coat dyed entirely in matching dark colours. IMO the best thing about that skin, and the thing that makes it look special, is the embroidery, and that only shows if it’s dyed in a colour that contrasts with the background. If it’s all in Abyss (or other dark dyes) it loses that. The same is true of the carapace coat, sylvari/TA skins and a few others – you can only see the detail with contrasting dyes.

Admittedly it can be really hard to get contrasting colours to look good and not like you just lost paintball, but when it looks good it looks so much better than all abyss.

It’s so ironic that people seem to think that the more revealing armor – the better looking. For example when I see people mix profane pants/apprentice skirt with sorcerer’s top. Or the worst ugliest combination I’ve ever seen on norn (medium armor) and not just once; norn cultural tier 3 pants (same as Eir has) with sniekthief top. Eeeeeeeeew. Viva bikini plate! Seriously though…bring on the bikini plate :-)

This, just like all online games…are fantasy games…function is irrelevant. Once magic is introduced…logic is dismissed. I’m all for variety in aesthetic style. There should be choices for all mindsets. There should be a full range from full body coffins to skimpy beach wear lol. It would be nice if they would introduce alternate art models for sets to accommodate.

I agree with you on the disparity of lacking enough options to show any skin on male medium armor. They really need to open up their art choices a bit more. I’m a bit disappointed in just the general lack of options besides full body straight jackets though…whether male or female. I like the human T3 medium for female characters, but not enough to roll human. They need more choices like that that aren’t race dependent. Same with the norn T3 heavy for female character models….every other race is just out of luck?

True. I actually “cheat” when I want to make some revealing armor on my medium armor characters. And by cheating, I mean using the right dyes so I can pretend some parts are actually the character’s skin. It works better on dark-skinned humans or Sylvari, but it’s never gonna be perfect, of course. The Strider armor is actually fine if you want to pretend wearing fishnet.

The only leather available in-game that is somewhat sexy, without being almost inappropriate (blatant underboob!), or a long coat, is the Sneakthief set.

This “choice” might be OK for a straight man, who is playing a female char, as he will probably like the underboob look; but, for a woman playing a female char, it’s obviously not really an adequate choice, at all.

I hope they will add more plainish, leggings and top/jumpsuit options, that are neither nun-like, nor really overtly sexual.

Light armour is almost worse, in terms of options, though.

As the only non-skirt leggings (that don’t have the bottom half of a heavy jacket over the top of them) are the Profane ones and they have a gap at the top of the thighs with garter straps.

It’s a nice set, in terms of the overall silhouette etc., but I just wish a slightly plainer, more modest version was available, with no thigh gap, or straps.

In both cases, they seem to go from one extreme to the other, in terms of modesty (or lack of it) – we need far more options in between the two.

I want my characters to look streamlined and dynamic (and I guess somewhat “sexy”); but not semi-naked, or dressed in what looks more like underwear.
