I apologize if this subject has been posted. I searched and couldn’t find one out there! I’m looking at starting on another legendary weapon. I made eternity pre-HoT and I haven’t even begun on a new one. So, I’m wondering if it’s worth it to do the collection for a precursor, or if I should just farm the gold?

I would also like to know how long the collection for a precursor takes. Obviously, that depends on the player, but if anyone has a general estimate or average for the length of time, that would be awesome.

Thanks all!

Most of the time, the collections cost just as much or even more than buying off TP. So collections are still the same amount of gold with just some added collectible stuff and time gates.
I personally would just buy straight off TP, seems like a faster and easier way.

Only do the collections if you think they would be fun. (I actually like the new legendary short bow collection — it’s basically an extended quest chain.)

Once you get the collections out of the way, I don’t see anything stopping you from crafting multiple. I accidentally used the recipes on the wrong character (my main rather than my weaponsmith), so I had to buy another set for karma. I got the initial crafting item with it, so I should be able to craft a second precursor with it. On the other hand, once you have the skin, crafting another isn’t horribly useful, unless you are going for twice-told-legend.

I am pretty sure you can only do the crafted version once. If you want to do a second crafting of the same (pre-HoT) legendary, you need to get the precursor the old fashioned RNG way. Certainly I have seen a number of posts from people that started it up again, sank resources, and then cried out in woe when they realized they’d wasted their effort.

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere or saw a vid where anet said yes just one but they were working on a simpler method for creating seconds for people who want dual weps etc.

However that has probably been scrapped along with the new Legendries. It would be nice to have some word from Anet on this as they did not address it when the Legendary announcement was made.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

Buy it of the TP. Collections are almost always more expensive.

Collections are never more expensive unless you buy the mats in between instead of collecting what you need. Collections give you various options:

- farm everything, making the collections neglible in price in comparison
- use some mats from your own storage and buying the rest – still works out cheaper
- buy every single required material -The same price or more than buying the pre

Collections also give you some extra content to do whilst you go about it.

You should also considere that doing collections can be very painful, you need to be ready to wait events for hours, etc. Sometimes it’s worth paying 100g+ more and get it at the TP. But if you have time and you’re not hurried, the collection remains the best solution as it gives you an occupation.

Collecting mats yourself doesn’t make them free. They still have value.
Looking at the worst pre to craft according to the gw2efficiency link posted above, the Lover is about 500g on the TP and uses about 1000g worth of mats to craft. Even if you’re determined to farm loads of ascended mats, if you just sell the mats until you can buy the pre you will be farming for a lot less time than if you tried to craft it. Expensive in time or expensive in money, whichever you pick that collection is more expensive.

I can see your point of view, but I would never look at it like that. If I don’t spend gold, then it’s free to me. I don’t look at the value of something I farm, I collect what I need, when I need it and then craft with those mats. Economical efficiency in a video game is just not something I personally put any store in, especially since I don’t pure farm – I’m usually doing other things on a map whilst I gather.

sorry if this is a silly question but.. how do i read this? so for example Dusk says “Crafting Price(buy)” is 634g then "Trading Price(buy) is 970g does this means that it is way better to do the collection and then buy all the mats to craft it than just buy it straight?

Crafting for popular weapons is often cheaper but time consuming. Dunno why people say buying it directly is cheaper since it’s not the case.

You just need a lot of time. If you know how to play with the TP for buy mats, it shouldn’t be an issue.

The low price is if you craft everything to the bloody end. For the sword or greatsword that’s 90 time gated deldrimor steel ingots, so you’ll spend 3 months making those alone. Changed all of them to TP for dawn and the collection cost went from about $600 to over $900.
