Let's talk "mentor".
The apples have to go, it’s that simple. It serves no purpose at all. The idea might have been good but leaving it up to the people to decide whether they are fit for mentoring is a bad decision.
It’s no worse than leaving it up to the people if they are fit to wear a commander tag. It is literally the same problem, only one is an XP tag, and one is bought with gold.

Yes, it is akin to second life where you can make your title be anything you wanted (well, as long as you did not write something bannable in it). The excuse given for getting rid of the official mentor program was that some people were doing it just for the title. Completely ignoring the reality that the argument was a bit odd given anyone could say they were a mentor in their title.
Some sort of way to limit vanity tagging (of either tag) would be desirable. I just am not sure how to do that.

Without tying commander tags to some sort of larger organizational structure it isn’t really possible.
The only idea I have for the system would be to not show such tags on the map until they have successfully rasied a squad of X number of people, and that would have been a fine system at launch.
However, with mentor tags being specifically designed without squad funtions, and the way people use commander tags for a variety of things, the window to make that kind of change to the system is long past.
At this point they ust need to flip the implementation and have them hidden by default, with a UI similar to LFG that people on the map can open to “track” a specific commander or mentor, as well as a little text bosx when someone tags up to put in info about what they’re commanding/mentoring.
So, in other words, you’d enter a map, open the UI, and see a list of commanders and mentors on that map:
Commander Maklain – “Blue Keep Assault team”
Commander Colin – “Yak Destruction Squad”
Commander Trollicus – “Selling quip, 50 million gold”
BobTheMentor – “Answering questions for new players”
Mentor_Fred – “Map completion group”
TrollTheMentor – “LOL I HAS A TAG”
From there you can join a squad (for commanders) or just track the tag (for mentors or commanders) as well as right click interactions for whisper, etc. so people could tag up even if they don’t want to lead groups around the map just to answer questions or whatever.

You owe me a new laptop.
I was thinking of a way to educate people in using tags though. As much as it may seem attractive to always use some automated solution it is not always a good idea. Kitten filters are a great example.
My 2 cents: The mentor tag should be only given to the people who demonstrated some good experience with the game mechanics.
Tier 1 of mastery and already has the mentor tag?! Ridiculous. Even Tier 4 is ridiculous. There should be a single player challenge of some kind to prove you are worthy of wearing the tag.
Today one guy popped his “awesome” mentor tag while another guy was commanding, people got confused and the group divided. There should be a way to “kick” the mentor tag from the map. A map vote to make the mentor tag disappear if it is interfering.
I’m working on the third tier of the Mentor Mastery. I did a lot of running around Mad King Lab, no one on the map having a tag. Why? I didn’t know I had said tag.
I had automatically assumed it was something you learned when you finished the Mastery line.
Seeing how many mastery points it takes to finish the fifth tier, I can see why it’s not on the 5th tier.
HOWEVER, for the love of God the Mentor Tag should be AT LEAST second tier, preferably 3rd tier.
Putting in on first tier was completely ridiculous.
I haven’t had a single problem with Mentors on my server. As for dozens of people putting it on while waiting for Karka Queen / After Killing Karka Queen?.. Boo hoo people play with their toys. I’ve seen plenty of Commanders do the SAME THING.

The only times I have seen that many commanders tag up in the same place is for champ trains. You want people tagged up for that so you can tell if everyone has arrived before you start the attack.

Ive seen the same thing as Okho, and they git kittenED when asked to tag down. Jeez my least favorite Silverwaste run this happened, we had 4 commanders, one per fort, doing the events just fine, then blam a whole group of tags goes up in the camp to lead a chest train. They demand the tags on the forts tag down, map chat was horrible, towards the four commanders at the forts, go figure. So yea, it goes both ways, trolls will be trolls, doesnt matter what tag they have up.

There is nothing wrong with having mentor tags. They simple provide the ability for those who wish to be helpful in PVE to do that.
I wish people could get over the idea that mentoring should be something restricted to the levelling process. How many people in the new maps need mentors? – not everyone has a commander tag for the simple reason they aren’t willing to shell out gold for it.
New players to the game will also be able to see Mentor and be obliged to ask questions and those mentors will be in a position to give guidance.
How many commanders are willing to take the time and give guidance on maps? I’m betting very few. They’re to busy organising stuff or speeding through with zergs.
The only people sour here are those with commander tags that have felt its novelty supposedly being devalued for some reason – get over it and be a commander, not whine about mentors who want to take the time to help individual people and/or groups.
Literally every complaint about mentor tags boils down to “I don’t feel special anymore.” And if you got a commander tag to feel special, you’re just as bad as everyone who displays a mentor tag for exactly the same reason. The only difference is, since mentor tags are so frickin’ easy to get, nobody will feel special for having one 2 weeks from now.
I can’t help but feel some of you guys picked up Commander Tags for all the wrong reasons.
This.
It also should be blatantly obvious for anyone that the commander was designed for WvW when looking at the whole squad system, icons, commands (supplyinfo / squadinfo). It also costs WvW-only currency. The instances in PvE where a comm would actually be required are few and most of the time require additional coordination anyway (triple trouble). Don’t believe me? Tag up at teq and command wrong on purpose – lets see how many players will actually follow you and how many will tell you to kitten off and win the event on their own.
The ability to mark a group’s location on the map can be helpful for newer players which alone should not cost 300g (this is why i thenk the mentor in its current implementation is a good idea – better filtering options would be nice though). If you really shelled out 300 gold just for having that in PvE, you were not short of money in the first place and deliberately paid full price for only a fraction of functionality and prestige.
This so much.
If you picked up a commander tag just to look flashy in PvE, then the problem is you, not the ‘free’ mentor tag.
Id like to get a Mentor tag so that I can help the map.
Also, I can use it as a stand in if there arent any commanders around. I wont be using it much, but I do think it will be good so I can help out when needed.

Why when someone expreses a concern about things like this, its always about being ripped off with money? Why do you even feel ‘ripped off’? You bought that tag for a purporse to command maps, or did you bought it to feel special, and now you don’t?
Some people should go check their ego issues. On other note, I feel more worried that when many people earn that mentor tag, many maps will become a complete mess from people spaming it while doesnt even knowing what’s intended for or what its purpose. What I am hoping for is that people will know better to follow the original commander tags, and not the mentor ones. Yes its nice and shiny, but its so easy to get access to, that can be used a lot from abusers and trolls, and we might get a lot of maps ruined by it. That’s what worries me, and you should be worried about that OP, not for being ‘ripped off’.
What about altering the mastery, so only people who bought the old commander tags would be able to unlock it and use it? Could this be implemented? It really worries me that sooner or later we will be seeing a lot of those mentor tags, which will do next to nothing but to confuse the large masses of players, and creates one big terrible mess.
The future itself is not the problem from my point of view. While I am sure many will use to be helpful to people around the maps, the whole system is very open for potential trolls and abusers, who would have nothing better to do with their time then come tag themselves and mentors, and troll on other players. All potential implications should be considered here, I think.
