Firstly lets keep this discussion civil I’m aware a lot of players are angry but I don’t want this topic locked or merged.

While the gem conversion is a major issue a second one is being overshadowed by it. Several previously exclusive items are now no longer exclusive and even worse are actually easier to obtain this year which is a double blow to those who already had the items.

-Mask of the night: what was believed to be the exclusive festival skin is again available from the chest this year.
-Mini Ghost Carlotta: Has been reintroduced with a far cheaper acquisition method.
-Mini Bloody Prince Thorn: Has been reintroduced with a far cheaper acquisition also.
-Master Carver The previously exclusive 2012 title has been reintroduced removing its exclusivity.
-Mini Candy-Corn Elemental: Was reintroduced, was previously believed to be a story exclusive.
-Devil Horns A previously exclusive former town clothes item.
As a result of this there is now no exclusive item from Halloween 2013 and players that worked towards the miniatures are left feeling ripped off.
Additionally titles were meant to be one of the acceptable ways of showing you were there/ showing off your veterancy and I dislike that even a minor exclusive like that was devalued.

Assuming the Hexed Outfit is not exclusive to this year it also means there is no exclusive item for Halloween 2014 either which is disappointing.

I don’t mind items being re-introduced, as long as it’s 1. same effort put in to obtain the first time around, and 2. within the season. The Zephyrite merchant looked out of place to me…but it’s acceptable since people were unhappy about not spending their tokens before the merchants vanished without warning.

Exclusivity imo comes from the first Halloween, like the skins. Now they are back, but much more difficult to obtain – and still cashshop free. (Nay sayers, I got 12 of those shiny candy wrappers without trying.)

This is meant to be a laid-back game. Not everyone can afford to play every event. I’m personally quite happy of things being reintroduced, so I can enjoy them if I miss them.

Actually, the thing being overshadowed by the Gem Conversion farce is also Gem related. The removal of the Gem conversion graph and a mysterious jump of ~22% in the cost of converting gold to gem, which is significantly higher than any jump in the same timeframe in the games history.

And they removed the gold/gem conversion call from the API.

Since the game is purely cosmetic, allowing all players (new and old) the opportunity to obtain all of the skins in the game is okay with me.

Firstly, I’m glad that those items are being made available again, since I missed Halloween 2013 due to pressing personal/RL issues. Secondly, not everyone has the same amount/level of resources available, so I can tell you that, strictly speaking for myself, it’s going to take a fair amount of work to get the wherewithal needed to get some of these things – again, because I didn’t participate in Halloween last year so I didn’t have the chance to amass the necessary candy corn, fangs, etc.

After all of these threads and everything that’s happening it’s quite clear the focus towards the new player base and the gem shop, as they are the ONLY source of revenue. All of these threads could be summed up by those two things, new player base and gem store.

If things were exclusive it doesn’t work in favor of a new player base.

Well they failed at that step for one, The bloody prince mini cost 20 CCC and that was with the CC drop rate being far lower, this year you can get up to 30CC a TOT bag and the price is down to 6 additionally alternate obtaining method of 700 skulls is even cheaper.

I had neither of the mini’s last year. I got both last night, it’s disrespectful to the people who worked on it last year.

This is meant to be a laid-back game. Not everyone can afford to play every event. I’m personally quite happy of things being reintroduced, so I can enjoy them if I miss them.

I have no problem with people missing events, they just miss out on those items too it’s their choice. What rewards would there be for people who do attend all the events? What rewards is there for veterans?

Surely: “Mad King Chests were created in the Mystic Forge during Halloween 2012. Recipe no longer works. Any booster could be used except PvP Glory Boosters.”

Not only do I have the direct Wiki Evidence, but I distinctly remember becuase I spent 50USD on Black Lion keys and never got 1 Skin. When they put the Mad King Chest recipe in the game (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/updates/Update-Notes-October-24-2012), I took all of the crap I got form the black lion chests and made a ton of the Mad King Chests. I opened them and got a bunch of the skins including 3 Great saw skins, two of which I sold last year.

You are talking about two different sets of weapons. The Ascent to Madness dropped: The Crossing
The Mad Moon
Arachnophobia
Mad King’s armor

These Weapons Came ONLY from Black Lion Chests, OR from Mad King Chest (Mystic Forge Recipe):
Greatsaw Greatsword Skin
Chain Sword Skin
Ghastly Grinning Shield Skin
Scythe Staff Skin
Grinning Gourd Rifle Skin
Severed Dagger Skin

The only Mad Kings Chest Other than teh Mystic Forge Recipe (was an Rare Quality) was the one for the clock tower An Exotic Level Container (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mad_King_Chest_).

Let’s talk about yet another way that the exclusive gear/skin raider types are a thing of the past and are being overshadowed by the much larger much more profitable casuals because that’s what’s really happening here. This isn’t a developer problem, in fact it’s not a problem at all, it’s a well known phenomenon where the demands of the consumers change with the type of consumer.

A version of the devil horns that now cost 200 gems were given away for 0 gems through the Black Lion in 2012. They also didn’t limit it to one per account. You could grab as many as you had characters.

This being said, at the time they qualified as ‘town clothes’ so they were limited in use.
Once the wardrobe was activated the horns became regular headgear (and to what is being sold today).

That was exactly what Guildwars 1 did, there was a new exclusive skin or mini for each annual holiday while the game was active. My expectations were in line with previous indications and while past behavior is no indicator of future the first and second GW2 events seemed to be following the trend.

IF there is any change it should be the other way round
that those last year minis get more expensive
it would be totally ok if price stays the same…but making them cheaper is just unfair

While Anet has stated that they don’t necessarily want everyone to have everything (was in one of the various twitch streams…think it was back around SAB2), I can understand them not making holidays exclusive. In GW1 the only thing exclusive about the holidays was the unique hat they gave each year. Everything else was pretty much accessible each year. Even then, there was a relatively big fuss by some about not being able to get the previous years hats, so this could also have led to part of the reasoning in changing some of the holiday exclusivity.

Above and beyond all of that, this is China’s first Halloween (and Anet has stated that they want to keep patches synced), and it wouldn’t be fair to them to not have any access to any of this what so ever. It’s not their fault they didn’t have the game at that time.

Personally, I’m neither feeling let down nor ripped off. I sort of expected it to be honest.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I think exclusivity, unless it is tied to a skill test, is pointless. It’s a video game, played by hundreds of thousands of players. Trying to be a special snowflake is meaningless.

For the record, I’ve been here since the first beta weekend, and have my share of items that are no longer available in game, so this isn’t just sour grapes.

But, what about bragging rights, proving I was there, etc?

Why does anyone need to “prove they were there”. Do you think newcomers really care that you played the game a year before they did? Aren’t your memories of enjoying it at the time enough? You really need some sort of shiny to make the experience meaningful? This “need to prove I was there” is akin to the bizarre urge to constantly photograph things rather than experience them when sight seeing, or the need to keep up with the neighbors in price of car and the vibrant green of your lawn.

But, won’t everyone look the same if everyone can get all the armor and weapon skins?

Only the people who jump on the most recent items. Sure, for the month after a new skin is released, every other character in Tyria is wearing that piece, but when the next thing comes out, they’ll move on. Remember when everyone had a SAB weapon? Or holographic wings? You still see them around now, but sprinkled here and there on players who decided they fit the look they wanted.

The real secret to everyone not looking alike is having enough variety of quality skins in game. The more options, the more player’s individual taste will cause there to be a variety in looks. Especially if ANet gives us mix-and-match armor pieces instead of must-be-used-as-set costumes.

But it should be at least as difficult to get the item when it comes available later, right?

Not necessarily. As I said above, the newest thing is usually the most desirable. You have to work harder if you want to be an early adopter, like in real life. When it gets released later, it makes perfect sense for it to be more accessible to those who didn’t get it the first time, and the early adopters can chase whatever has been just released. This is common in many areas of life.

Other than GW2, I’ve never paid more than $7 for a video game, because I’m content to wait two to three years and pick it up on a Steam mid-week madness sale. I’m playing the same game (actually, sometimes an improved game due to patches/mods) you spent $50 on back when it was released. Does that upset you?

I’ll reiterate, exclusivity does make sense if you are talking about a particularly challenging skill test to get the reward. I’m not an elite player by any means. I’d likely never have rewards locked behind knowing an encounter inside out and split-second dodging skills. Still, I see the value in providing exclusive rewards for people who really excel at the game.

Exclusivity because you’re willing to grind out thousands of a particular crafting mat or just because you were playing during the two weeks the item was available? We don’t need that. It takes time for ArenaNet to develop every item they add to the game. We need maximum access to those items so that the content is as full as it can be for any player. Sure, rotate it out to keep it fresh (my wife does the same with my kids toys), but nothing should be kept out of the game permanently so that a small section of the player base can feel special.

The way I see it, the only exclusivity in the game should be rewards gotten by content you ‘refuse’ to participate in – as in spvp or wvw. If you don’t like one or the other or both, then you’ll simply have to miss out on that particular content.

If something has been out before at one point and available to anyone, then there’s no point restricting anyone else from it simply because they weren’t there or missed out.
And greed (complaining that it messes with the price or because everyone else will have it [not everyone will], is no excuse).

People can be busy with daily day to day things. Look at it this way, would you want to be shut out from something you only had a one time chance to acquire? Or would you like an additional chance to get it?

And this is all property of anet/ncsoft, so they can do whatever they want.

Yes I’m a vet, yes I’m salty. Problem?

And they removed the gold/gem conversion call from the API.

Exclusivity is overrated. I didn’t care if my Fused Gauntlets lost its exclusivity. I felt nothing special about it except it looked cool.

The only thing we need to talk about exclusivity is that we should just lose it.

You don’t need a tinfoil hat to smell this fish.

Gold/gem conversion ALWAYS skyrockets on a patch day. I mean… that doesn’t require a tinfoil hat in any way, shape, or form.

Do you think that the fastest increase in this rate in the game’s history coinciding with the restriction in Gem purchase agency and the obfuscation of the system is not suspicious? This update is not the most hyped update in the game’s history and, even if it was, it’s not just surpassed previous patterns it’s completely re-written the book.

You are right that the conversion sees a hike on patch/content days. It has never reached these levels at these rates. There is a reason that players like myself who have played through every update and seen these rates is questioning the authenticity of such record-breaking conversion rate changes that is without precedent on the very day ArenaNet delivered such a dubious system.

It could be down to people buying much more gems than they normally would (because the minimum purchase is 400Gems with Gold) and I’m sure that’s exactly according to the real design of this system. Bleed the gold for the highest rate possible might return higher Gems with $ down the line as gold hoarders exhaust their savings now.

I already have witch hat, devil horns, master carver title and mask of the night, ArenaNet.

All I want is to get Mad Memoires back that I deleted to free up some space in early 2013 because I didn’t think you’d ever actually bother introducing a skin wardrobe. :|

OPs claim of “exclusive” has no basis in fact. Show any claim from Anet that these items were EVER implied to NEVER be made available again for this post to hold ANY water.

ArenaNet never once said any of this stuff would be exclusive.

^ This. There is a difference between “player assumed” exclusivity and “company guaranteed” exclusivity, that is made all the more glaring when the acquisition method is easy or free.

Dont acquire items just because you think they’ll never be back. Pick up things you actually enjoy having, so that in the event they get recycled you wont feel like Anet wronged you.

There is no concept in gaming that makes my eyes roll more than exclusivity.

I don’t mind about exclusivity, every player should be able to get any skin. But Mini Carlotta was a cash shop item worth 500 gems. I paid theses gems with real money and when the minis are finally usable, they give it for some candy corn. Anet you sure won’t see any more money from me….

I think it coincides quite well with a raffle for items that were highly sought after by the community (the chainsaw sword for example). Raffle tickets you can get via the gemstore by the truckload.

Couple that with having to convert gold to gems in groups of 400 now, yes I think that more than adequately explains the spike.

I am outraged at the miniature nerf. I bought Mini Carlotta and Mini Prince Thorn last year and now they are basically 10g for both. Thats a value degration of more than -90%!

Anet shows once again that they have no respect for the effort veterans spent on this game.

Isn’t devaluation the risk you take investing in something? Why should anyone be entitled to see items grow in value?
