Lets talk about the new Gem conversion [Merged]
Will this change take a year to implement?

Very good news indeed Gaile, i was going into a rage-quit when i saw what you did with the currency exchange…
Thanks for the update Gaile. It’s relieving to see you guys do listen to reason and player opinions.
Do not be fooled!
This was damage control due to major gaming sites bashing Areanet for this mess!
I linked the articles there!
I’ve refrained from posting during all of this and have just kept up reading, but I think there’s one major lesson to be had here: ArenaNet has made several changes to the game without either A. thinking through the ramifications properly or B. asking for community feedback prior to making a game-changing alteration. There has been an abundance of good changes and community involvement lately, but I think that really does need to extend to some sort of testing arena.
If they really did not see negative feedback coming it would be very sad.
Personally I think they did expected negative feedback and simply decided that if the negative feedback was not to bad the would just leave it in and if it would be a lot they would add something like the option to also convert to 200 gems.
This to try and increase gem-sales.
However the negative feedback was so overwhelming that they had to come back to it completely to prevent any more damage and that much of negative feedback they did not see coming.
That is what I think.
They are simply always trying to push the boundaries of the cash-shop focus. Remember at release how they where defending the boosters and next to that they would only have a very few cosmetic things like costumes (only usable in city’s) and some convenient things like character slots and bank slots.
At release the only really bad thing where that the mini’s where in the cash-shop in stead of in the game. But after pushing boundaries for 1,5 year (they started with most of that about half a year in) look where we are now.
And likely for as long as they keep the cash-shop focus they will try pushing those boundaries.
It’s good to see that finally people did not except this one.
No pitchforks it is! Nice to see that you guys change it!
(edited by nVu.6972)
I will say this…seeing that the reaction to the error AND to the swift correction of the error were both negative, I would recommend that no one ever becomes a game developer anywhere.

These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”
this is one of the dumbest changes ever. too obvious this is just for making money
Anet, please go back to the old system (it wasn’t that good either, but at least i could get exactly what i wanted) or add a button where you get to another screen where you can define the exact amount of gems i want to exchange for gold. i won’t get any gems until this is fixed.
This is good question:
How LONG is “soon” ? 1 week? 1 year? or maybe never ?

To be fair they have already said that they will change it based on the feedback. So you are a bit late to the party.

I would guess as soon as it is ready but at the latest with the next regular update (November 4th).

It will take them as long as it takes for us to forget we are kittened about it.
Here’s an update for you:
It’s clear that quite a lot of you would like to have greater flexibility in using the Currency Exchange. Our intention when we designed the new interface was to streamline large volume purchases, which make up the majority of transactions.
In light of your feedback, we will update the Currency Exchange so that you can decide how you want to use it. We will keep the new streamlined system and also offer a new “Custom” button on the panel that you can use to exchange any increment of gems or gold.
We anticipate rolling this out soon. Stay tuned!

Sorry for the delay in posting this, but out of respect to our international community, we wanted to be able to post in several forums at once.
Thank you!
I’m really happy to hear it.
When the fix rolls out, graph or no graph, the conversion page will become an improvement over the old one.
Awesome.
I finally got to check this out earlier, and was coming here to add my voice to those who don’t like the inflexibility of the new system. But now I hear that it’s already going to be fixed.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Posts like this are so utterly useless. You don’t have any idea of the data they are looking at and that govern such changes. I am sure many players actually enjoyed the change, but these players are not the ones who come ranting here.
I’m not saying that there wasn’t any data that gave someone the bright idea to implement this – I’m saying that it was an flawed in an extremely obvious way that any basic user testing should have been able to pick up. Why didn’t it pick up that the UI update was so flawed?
I’m perfectly happy with the scenario where someone gets an idea based on some data that they think is great but in reality it sucks. I’m also happy with the idea that a developer would get told to implement this bad idea and do it assuming that the person telling them to do it knows what they’re talking about. I do that all the time.
There seems to be a theme, though, of some updates being waved through without anyone who actively uses the system (or perhaps even plays the game) reviewing it. I cannot believe that anyone who actively uses the gem exchange would have given this their support.

Here we go. Just add some fancy graphics and colors and PLEASE change it before haloween ends !
Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe the consumer base will approve of changes made with utmost integrity.
You are wrong.
The reason you are wrong is because different people want different things. Even the purest integrity will not avoid a situation where a change that benefits some will greatly harm the experience of others. This has already happened in GW2’s lifespan and will likely happen again.
Give me an example if you don’t mind. I also believe that I had also stated if done correctly in that same paragraph.
If you wish to be taken seriously on a forum it is generally best advised not to chop someone’s statement into pieces as it distorts the overall meaning of the message.
I can tell you right now:
-Ascended gear was not
-Although the wardrobe was a convenient thing, it was not done correctly as many costume options were taken away as a result, not being able to mix the phantom hood with the madking outfit was an inconvenience. I still purchase transmutation stones however as I still appreciate the effort behing the design.
-Watchwork Sprocket pick was not made with utmost integrity
I guess the only thing really that abides by your statement is the megaserver change but one could state that these low populated servers and areas would have been thriving to begin with had the content was able to keep them interested in the location in the first place.

Thank you Gaile, this will make many people happy.
May I ask one thing of you? Please bring this feedback to the people who make the decisions…
Please stop putting things into the game that you know will anger the playerbase. This has happened far too frequently with GW2. This game that sticks out the most where a developer makes a decision not based on true player feedback(as this thread is evident of), knows what our reaction will be, and does it anyways. Arenanet sits back, watches the flames grow, and then if it suits them, they make necessary changes or they address the community.
Please…this needs to stop. Stop adding things on an impulse and actually solicit player feedback before doing so. This doesn’t have to be regarding everything, but major changes like this, definitely. Claiming that the old system was cumbersome is bogus. If 30 pages of ranting and raging is not enough to disprove Arenanet’s claim that the old system was too difficult, then I dont know what will get through…
Example of things that are controversial additions:
-Gem currency conversion
-Megaservers(guilds especially loved this one)
-Living Story(lots of people hate it, lots of people love it…50/50)
-Ascended gear(same here..split 50/50, people simply accepted it over time but it wasn’t asked for by the majority)
-Traits revamp
**Even if someone disagrees with one or two things in the list above, the point is that things have been done to the game that the game either didn’t need or could have been done a lot better/differently if you just asked us.
TLDR; Add more things into the game that we want, change things in the game that we ask for, stop adding things into the game that no one has asked for. This move has done nothing but hurt Arenanet’s image as a greedy cash-grab company.
I bet these forums would be a happier place if our feedback was sought more often.

that gold/gem conversion LOL
whoever decide that is a pro troll, rob me gently.
But history says that in the past, holidays have not had such a dramatic effect. So why this time?
Because this time they have a raffle for one of the most highly sought after and coveted skins in the game (the chainsaw greatsword), and a item that you can buy from the gemstore (for I think 25 gems a piece) that gets you one “entry” in that raffle.
Couple that with having to buy gems 400 at a time, and knowing how much people love to gamble… no, I’m not at all surprised the gem rate spiked so highly so quickly. I have no doubt there were a multitude of players grabbing 100,000 gems or more for themselves.
There need not be any conspiracy when simple human behavior explains issues better.

Don’t discount ANet adding an outfit that is a beautiful dress. The best looking outfit in the game at this point. If you go anywhere right now you’ll see how popular this is. I bought one, regardless of the gemgate fiasco. Divinity’s Reach is filled with players in this outfit. That alone would be a huge boost to gem sales. HUGE.
My hope is that, given how poorly it went over this time, the for the new players excuse is dead!

Not yet. I know a lot of new players find it very confusing to craft a legendary. They don’t know how to get the ingredients and has no clue how to obtain a precursor. So I suggest Arena help the new players out by making it easy for them to acquire a legendary. First, they must simplify the ingredients: Remove Map completion requirement. Remove Gift of Fortune. Precursor will be given to them upon their first birthday. In fact, you don’t even have to use the mystic forge, that’s way too confusing. Throwing stuff away to get something back? That’s highly illogical. So once players have all the ingredients, the legendary fairy will appear and hand you the proper Legendary.

I would love to leave this happy, “aw shucks!” thank you for changing this, but the interface right now is so anti-consumer I can’t. Am I happy it’s getting changed? Totally! The thing I find egregious though is that a few years ago no one at ArenaNet would have allowed something like that into a Guild Wars game.
This is a community that can fly off the handle, but a lot of us that are playing GW2 have left games in the past because these same kinds of underhanded tactics. A lot of us would really appreciate not going down this road again. Hopefully the team will learn from this and do better in the future. Likewise, hopefully the community will learn to be more civil in the future as well.

GW1 didn’t even have a trading post or auction hall, and you had to go out-of-game to 3rd party websites to organize trades involving anything of significant value.
So yeah, you’re right… in the sense that GW1 wasn’t even THAT user-friendly on that score.

What about the fact that they knew what the right thing was before launching this? Does that come into play at all for you? I mean…they aren’t stupid. They are smart enough to make an MMO and sell it to millions. They know what they are doing.
This isn’t an “Oh mai gawsh, we never thought about this..so you want to be able to manually enter in your amounts?? Got it! Thanks”.
This is a “We’ll force them to overbuy and over pay…lets wait and see if they reach a 10.0 on the ‘Rage-o-meter’ we have on the wall in the office. If so, we have the code ready to go to create a ‘Custom’ button..so we can appease them and give off the appearance of listening to their feedback. Either way, win win for us!”
This is a TERRIBLE system.
the regular forum complainers will continue to yell and scream no matter what, but know there are those of us out here who find yesterday’s announcement to revert the change to be great news and, even if it was partly motivated by bad publicity, to be a class move that shows you do listen to customers.
GW2 will always have its detractors and mindless ragebots, but – from my perspective – I have enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) my time in the game immensely. Keep up the good work.

WvW and SPvP feedbacks to deaf ears.
But when the problem is about something with real money, somehow, their ears start to hear.

very much
First the hype: “Improved”
Now the reality: Higher gem price, multiples of 400, can care less about game content.
Result: More players moving on to better managed games that have devs that support the players.
Once more, would be better to have 38 pages of people congratulating Anet on the implementation of GvG and Guild Halls instead of 38 pages of people complaining.
Been waiting for GvG since the freaking release. It is the most defining feature of GW1 and it isn’t even in GW2.
the regular forum complainers will continue to yell and scream no matter what, but know there are those of us out here who find yesterday’s announcement to revert the change to be great news and, even if it was partly motivated by bad publicity, to be a class move that shows you do listen to customers.

I am not mindless
And then there are those people that mindlessly accept a developers fix and forget why they were upset in the first place. You say that they listen to customers. I say that they knew that we would be upset in the first place and it was ignorance on their part. For me, this puts the company in more of a negative light. Assuming they have brain cells, if they didnt put this “enhanced system” into place in the first place, you wouldn’t have a 38 page thread about it.
Much like the initial Fractals rollout with ascended gear. If you participated in the AMA with Chris Whiteside, he responded(to my question actually) that they knew Ascended gear was going to cause a rage with us. They expected it. Ok… so why do it? Ok so you already invested dev resources. Why blindside us about it? They said ascended gear was always planned. Well, in order to ease us into the idea of another tier of gear, why not announce it when the game launched instead of waiting 3 months? Again, an entire year of crying on the forums could have been, possibly, entirely avoided with a few brain cells and a blogpost that they love to do. Just a little planning is all. It is because of this lack of, apparent, foresight, that I do not believe what arenanet says in their excuses for the multiple blunders or hurdles this game has experienced. But, the tide has gone away for ascended gear crying and like many, I’ve accepted it. Begrudgingly(Im not looking to start another discussion on it, but merely using it as a debate point here).
But as you say, in the end, its a game. Some enjoy, some do not. Some hope for a better future of the game(me). Some forgive and forget easily. Some are less forgiving than others, in all matters of life and thats OK too. Thats what makes us the human race.
Once more, would be better to have 38 pages of people congratulating Anet on the implementation of GvG and Guild Halls instead of 38 pages of people complaining.
Oh, but that won’t happen.
If it is something that people like they threads usually don’t even get more than two or three pages.

That this was a manufactured crisis is obvious. I feel strongly that this has more to do with NCSoft rather than Anet. Anet in not stupid but is looking more out of the loop than I thought. That’s a shame.
Please consider establishing two code trees such that the NA/EU version doesn’t clash with the China one again. While counter-intuitive it’s gotta be better than what’s going on now. The bad PR alone is costing both AreanNet and NCSoft a ton of sales at a time when folks are inclined to splurge a bit.
Gaile, you talked about it gonna take time to implement this fix. In my experience, progress on something like this is measured in hours or days. I’m pretty sure that forms the basis of everyone’s expectations. OK, I’m able to wait that long for my Gem Store purchases. In fact, I’d like to see the new UI before I make anymore transactions. Still.
To be honest this has left me with a bad copper-penny taste in my mouth. Moreover, it’s thrown a big wet blanket over the holidays for me.
We need to keep track if they actually revert back and not just made a fancy press release to lower the flames
We had to make our point clear with a 1000+ post and countless locked threads and negative PR on various gaming websites that would scare away any potential consumers in the feature while damaging the image of the company.
It’s go loud or go home I guess. If that’s what it takes then that’s what it takes.
Because gaming journalism is in such a wonderful place right now, right?
But hey, let’s entertain that. What gaming websites are you talking about? What negative PR?
Are you talking about Gaile Gray? Because she’s been saintly about the whole thing from beginning to end.
At the end of the day you have a relatively stable client and servers that never went down but for a few moments (for you) to get you your update.
On this point, certainly a valid one to raise, the Anet team listened to their players (even the really… ‘special’ ones) and addressed the issue within the span of a day.
One day.
That’s an incredible turn around, with Gaile being here every step along the way until this point and will likely follow up post-patch.
You have such a negative, sensationalist view of the whole thing when in reality this is just a very average event in the update cycle.
The community was right to raise the issue and Anet listened to it’s players. Those are the facts.
All the usual junk involved in a typical hot topic with a happy ending that bellies the fact that Anet listens to it’s players.
Not even newsworthy on a slow day. They’ll need folks like you to spin it for them.
“Epic developer turns on it’s players! Cleans out bank accounts to give everyone gems they didn’t want! Halloween ruined for the children! Comments from Gnashblade at 11!”
what i don’t get is, who is stupid enough to use 9 gems, a real life currency, for just 1 gold.
if it’s the other way then yes but i am really not stupid enough to see this as a good thing….
Got it! Thanks”.

Sure it was. It was attempt to try and make more money. Because shockingly, Arena.net is a business. It’s goal is to make as much money as they can. So they’ll do whatever they think they can get away with.
I’m not surprised by this. I’m not upset by it. Nor do I hold a grudge that they pushed too far and had to backtrack. They aren’t my friend. They aren’t in a relationship with me. They want my money, and everything else is secondary.
Thank you for making the cash shop more fun to not use.
Another way to allow us to save more money. Yea!
I hope the reworked UI will also include one currency exchange rate graph for the sake of giving all players an equal chance at understanding the market, and not just power users who will get the data from external websites anyway (the graph may either have no Y axis, simply showing the rate variations, or two Y axis, one on left for gems -> gold and one on right for gold -> gems with a little icon to ensure all players understand the meaning of each axis).
I’d like to second this. Advanced/power users may know about gw2spidy but new users (okay and lazy users like me) are truly the beneficiaries of that graph. There’s been community discussion for a long time about conveying more meaningful information in-game and imo this is a step backwards in that respect.
Perhaps reinstate it through a linked button at the top/bottom so it stays off the mainpage. Though I must say, I am still genuinely confused about why the original layout was unacceptable.
(edited by kimeekat.2548)
We definitely needs this UI scrapped as it is anything but good. Or at least give us an “advanced” version to allow us to do custom exchanges for gold to gems and revert to the old way of allowing us to convert any amount of gems to gold. Generally after making a purchase of gems from a pre-paid card I’ll convert the few left over gems to gold, with the new UI this functionality is completely gone unless I have the exact amount specified, and then I’ll still have a few left over gems. I cannot overstate my dislike of this new currency exchange.
I’m happy it’s being fixed but once again I have to point out that this thread wouldn’t have happened had there been a PTR for feature changes.
This debacle never would have happened if anet actually cared about the community and took the whole “lack of transpency” to heart…
If anet would have told the community this is what they were planning to do… none of this would have ever happened, it’s that simple.
But no, anet knows everything and thinks they have done no wrong.
Delusion seems to be running rampant there… Anet has smart employees…no way someone didnt know that this would happen but looks like anet didnt care and proceeded anyways…that tells me all I need to know about how much they truly care..

This would make sense, IF they didn’t announce the changes so soon after the articles turned up.
Changing things requires decision making and meetings, it is not just something taking 5 minutes and deciding to change it.
Another thing to keep in mind is that magazines that basically just work with sensationalist headlines in order to get a few extra clicks aren’t usually taken that serious by most smart people.

They have been doing nonstop crap like this without getting thoughts from the community. Anet has smart ppl working for them, like all gaming companies.. so they obviously knew there would be backlash… yet they proceeded anyways with this horrific change…It’s just sad how often this company keeps shooting itself in the foot and then acting like “well, no big deal, nothing to see here folks! we will continue to look at our awful metrics and continue deciding whats best for you guys!”

I still purchase transmutation stones however as I still appreciate the effort behing the design.
-Watchwork Sprocket pick was not made with utmost integrityI guess the only thing really that abides by your statement is the megaserver change but one could state that these low populated servers and areas would have been thriving to begin with had the content was able to keep them interested in the location in the first place.
One player’s “done correctly” can be another player’s “What the kitten is this kitten!” Players do not all want the same thing, and the community does not speak with one voice. Assuming that there is a “correct” way to design a game feature does not take these things into account. “Implemented correctly” is not an absolute.
Take Ascended gear. Some people preferred Ascended be a long term goal (something to “work” for), others that BiS acquisition be easy. No implementation could possibly serve both demographics.
