Level 40 Karma Costs - Higher than achievable?
I don’t know how it is that you are leveling, or if you are spending Karma as you go??
1st point- I have leveled 3 different classes past 40 and ALL of them had 20k+ in Karma by then just running event chains and doing heart/map completions.
2nd point- more important- You should not be using Karma really (especially 10k+) on a low lvl item you will out-level in hours or a few days at best. End game Karma gear is all 42K a piece and saving for that IMO is a better idea.
Even though the trade broker has been broken a lot- the fact is you can get green master work gear for close to vendor cost at most levels—- or sometime a little higher… but the “cost of ownership” is low- since even though it is “soulbound” you can vendor it when you upgrade and recover most of your initial investment
Karma gear does have slightly different/better stats at times but it isn’t “game changing” especially at level 40
I play like mad and do every event I possibly can and none of my characters have been remotely close to 9800 by 40. My first character had ~8000 by 40.
I think my warrior, who is 51 now, after taking weaponsmithing from 200-400 yesterday and launching from 42 to 51, has under 6k.
I seem to encounter far fewer events on my alts than I did on my first 80, because there are generally fewer players around in leveling zones already and you encounter more of what I call “the luck of the event” – sometimes you hit a populous area and there are lots of events, more often you go long time spans without seeing any.
I’m also seeing more and more broken events and one nicely broken event can screw up a whole area.
Nobody out of my whole guild has been at or over 9800 karma by 40, so I don’t see how GCap is doing it – grats to him.
Even if I had 20k karma at 40, would anybody really want to spend 10k karma on something they’ll grow out of in 10 levels or less?
Supposedly those weapons are for appearance sake. Just for skinning purposes.
Can’t edit this atm, for whateve reason.
If you want a rare weapon early, but a crafted rare for ~25s off the trading post. Dropped rares are usually a little higher in level but the first crafted rares are level 35 and people sell them, as they sell most stuff, at very low prices near TP cost of mats.
I found that it’s attainable IF you don’t spend any before then. I think it’s a poor system that encourages players to hoard karma, rather than spend it on different merchants along the way.
I have leveled 3 characters past 40 also, but only the one I specifically skipped all karma gear with and concentrated on events has enough to buy ONE piece of level 40 karma gear.
This begs the OP’s point, are the costs too high? I would say yes, especially for an item that as GCap has pointed out you will outlevel in very short order. What is the point of those vendors? What class uses a single weapon? Why would anyone want to make such a large karma investment for so little return? Also, if we are supposed to spend our hard earned karma on the level 40 vendors, what is the point of all the other minor karma vendors? In the current set-up you can’t have your cake and eat it too, you have to choose one or the other or none. Most people are choosing none now that word is out on the 42k karma per piece endgame gear.
These are the things that need to be considered. Why not remove those extra vendors? If they serve no purpose other than to give my computer something else to render, get rid of them. If they do serve a purpose, make them affordable.
I had almost 12k karma at 40, didnt spend any of it during my leveling. I ran event loops all the way from 30 to 40, fast leveling and nice karma…altho boring
I didnt buy the weapon anyway, they suck. you can get better weapons in the TP for a bunch of silver coins if you wait till 42/44…
cultural weapons, just like cultural armors, are inmensely overpriced. noone sane buys them, ever
(edited by Konrad Curze.5130)
I do think the prices are really over the top. There is no reason to make them so expensive for low level stuff. Those are the items people may get while leveling and will quickly loose any benefit for them, other than serving as a different skin.
I’ve done multiple times every low level content up to 40 and my 52 ele has 11k karma. Not sure how can someone have 20k at 40
My wife was really looking forward to buying a weapon from the hidden karma merchant in Lions Arch. It was one of those little milestone achievements that she spent a number of levels looking forward to, and I guess it helped keep her going.
Then, at around lv.47, she had enough, spent all of it, on one single weapon (skin), and hasn’t played since. It’s kind of depressing when you need to sacrifice so much just for a little reward. With no karma left, she couldn’t even look forward to saving up for another item, without it feeling like a crazy grind.
Me, I save all my karma. Never spend any of it, except on the occasional ingredients for cooking discovery. I’m still playing, but.. I’m not sure which is worse.
It’s an absurd mockery of a reward system. Maybe it’s meant to be, I don’t know.

Exactly my point. At the current costs as everyone here has pointed out you either shouldn’t buy them or buy them at 80 for skins. Why not just make them level 80 then? The current costs make them pointless at level 40.
Had around 15k karma at lv 40.
Did not buy the weapon.
In fact, I have only spend karma on cooking.
Its not that I am waiting for anything, just easier to come by gold than karma, so I use the TP for now.
I assume you’re talking about karma items like the ones on the vendor in the Lion’s Arch pirate jumping puzzle. I think these are primarily intended to use as skins, but the option to buy them at 40 can be had at a premium. There is so much other gear on the “normal” karma vendors to be had at that level for a much more reasonable price, this seems to me to be the only reasonable explanation.

I normally supplement my gear with crafted items or drops. I save up the karma for higher level items normally.
I did all the heart quests and events that popped up around me, and I had 12k Karma by the time I was lvl40.
THe key is: Stop buying the blues and greens from the heart vendors. You outlevel them so fast, there’s no point.
It is easier to buy gear in the TP – I remember when they decided to punish all of us for a few karma exploiters – you could no longer salvage karma gear and I lost an entire set of runes. That was a lot of gold down the drain because a few folks had made a karma exploit. Ouch.
Since then, I stopped buying any karma gear whilst levelling – the stuff on the trading post is quite cheap and serves its purpose.
I’ve never had more than about 8k by level 40. I don’t spend a huge amount of Karma, but I will sometimes buy things like crafting recepies, or acessory items. Oh and keeping up to level on your rebreather is another Karma drain since there does not seem to be another way to get them. (seriously, make the things craftable Arenanet, PLEASE.)
Fanboys will say you are supposed to save karma for level 80.
Any other reasonable player will say Nexon ruined GW2. Those weapons were MUCH cheaper on the Betas and even Release, the costs were increased by about 6x on the first week to make players grind.
So yeah… the cost is not reachable and by the time you can afford it, you really won’t need it.
I have 13k at 39 on my mesmer, it’s doable. I’ve been playing normally too, I’m not farming DEs. So it’s very possible. Also, you buy cultural items for their skins, not for their stats. If you want stats, check TP for way cheaper items.
Any other reasonable player will say Nexon ruined GW2.
What? How is Nexon related to Anet/Gw2?
(Can’t edit my post…)
No, you don’t achieve 13k karma at level 39 just by playing normally. You have either been farming DEs or completing low level zones as you progressed, which is far from “playing normally”

You totally missed the point of his argument.
I agree, 9800 karma is ridiculous for a level 40 weapon; either remove the items at that cost or make the prices reasonable to obtain.

Lol ok, whatever you say. I’ve been playing the game normally for myself, without farming DEs.
I spend karma and gold freely. Its just a game….and you can’t take it with you. Its the journey that fun to me. End game at level 80, for my purposes, means shelving a character and working on an alt.

I mostly agree about the prices of karma items overall due to the recent realization that I would need approximately 4 million of it to craft Eternity (with no guarantee that it is that little due to the randomness of the recipe for mystic clovers). At this point (about 75k karma), it seems like I’ll get the several hundred gold I need for the materials and such LONG before I ever manage to grind up ~4,000,000 karma leaving me to just run around completing world events for a VERY long time.
Maybe I just don’t have a proper sense of how much time getting everything else takes, but if I do, I dread the day I have everything but the karma I need.
Karma prices are completely over the top, since you have to grind A LOT to afford anything on the way to 80. Whats the point in spending all your Karma you’ve gathered by 40 on a weapon that will be obsolete by 50? Since you level pretty quickly, the balance is completely out of whack. Rare weapons on the TP are far more reasonable and just as good. I was easily able to afford full sets of rare armor at 40, 50, & 60. Haven’t seen any lvl 70 armor that I want, so I’ll ride it out until 80. Same with weapons. Every 10 or so levels I can buy a staff, scepter and dagger easily with money I make from gathering or vendor trash. I have around 5G now approaching 80 and that’s piddly for what I’ve seen some stuff go for on the TP.
Karma costs are far too extreme to be of any use until 80. I really can’t imagine how long they expected people to grind DEs to all that karma. Even at 80, how many weeks of doing the same DEs is fun? There are some that repeat far more than others, so those are the obvious ones to do. Looking at how many dungeon runs you have to do just to get 1 set, it seems mind boggling.
Cultural weapon/armor costs are simply completely broken for Tier 1+2 and unreasonable for Tier 3.
It’s one of those things I just don’t get. The game has been out for 1 month now, and still no fix. Seriously, how hard can it be to realize that it’s broken and then adjust some numbers? Make them cost the same as faction armor, done.
(edited by derLoko.2185)
I have found buying any armor for the purpose of the appearance before you reach lvl 80 is pointless anyway unless you plan to spend a fortune in t-stones. within 4 levels the armor is obsolete anyhow, weapons aswell.
Why would I care what I look like after I get to 80??
Daily achievments, if you max out gathering daily you get 4500 karma im level 38 and have 10k

Haha ikr
It actually took some deliberate gameplay choices back then, because you level so fast. If you did some exploration or crafting, you could be lvl 40 with almost zero karma back then.
I just got another character to 80 and purchased a full karma exotic armor set (252k karma, I actually bought it before 80, cuz I wanted Balthazar and it’s only rarely unbugged and open), and still have half my karma jugs in the bank.
“o, you don’t achieve 13k karma at level 39 just by playing normally. You have either been farming DEs or completing low level zones as you progressed, which is far from “playing normally””
Completely exploring maps as you level isn’t playing normally? I’m sorry I don’t quite understand what you’re trying to say.
Wouldn’t 2 jugs of karma from dailies or map completion give you 9 grand? seems to me that should be achievable at any level.
Is it just me or is 9,800 karma for a level 40 weapon unreachable? Why even have these if nobody can actually buy them at the appropriate level?
Maybe it’s just me. If so, please share how you made over 10,000 karma by level 40.
Try completing the daily achievements. They net you 4,5000 karma each.

Look at the date of the original post.
That was before Jugs were introduced as a daily reward.

and yet people didn’t notice this was a 2 month old thread?
there where even jugs 2 months ago
yes it would rehashed, the way to do it is to save all your jugs of karma or liquid karma drops and then get a karma booster and use them all at once. I am sitting on karma boosters at 20k karma at lvl 40, while having completed only a few dailies, tons of events, and 1 map completion.
So essentially keep doing dailies, as that is how you will get the jugs of karma (nearly 5k armor a shot) and karma boosters. Otherwise, this is the reason people farm karma events and go to one as soon as it’s called out.
(edited by FaRectification.5678)
haha. didn’t notice it was a necro’d thread. that makes a little more sense.
Without actively trying to get the daily achievements, I used my liquid karma bottles immediately. I will do an event whenever I can, but I don’t purposely “karma farm”. I believe that I do play the game normally, but I have 48,000 karma at level 37.

Daily rewards are the same at lvl 10 as they are at 80.
I don’t necessarily shoot for dailies, but I’ve received 3-4 of them on my elementalist and am sitting on enoough karma to buy 3 lvl 40 weapons (and i’m not even 30 yet)
are you kidding me….i had over 60k karma by lvl 40. maybe because i did every single event and i didnt spent it but still how can you NOT get 10k karma by lvl 40

My pop’s level 36 character has over 80000 karma. Do your dailies and you wont have karma issues.
There’s plenty of ways to get that amount of karma at that level. as Sinos said do your dailies! Te liquid karma jug for that alone is about 5k. Two days and theres your 10k! Other than that do more events and use any karma boosting items you get (either fro black lion chests, with reward keys) or maybe your guild could give you a few karma boosters (banners etc). Would also suggest doing more events around the world.

Low lvl armor and weapons cust need be revised
Cultural gold price is insane…..
Karma for low lvls cust to hight for weapons will be replaced so fast.
Gaining 9800 karma by level 40 is quite easy actually.. By level 42 I had over 50k karma. The Christmas event alone gives you 2-5k karma a day if you complete the jumping puzzle. Not to mention completing maps usually gives Karma jugs, as well as completing boss fights/events. If you do everything in the game, it’s super easy to get.
I would also recommend not bothering with any Karma until the later gear, as you can’t sell it and you’ll outgrow it super fast.
After they added karma jugs to dailies and monthlies, no problem.

No point in necroing this thread yet again, it’s outdated and karma no longer an issue. Perhaps it should just be locked?
stop necroing outdated problems that were already fixed, lolz.
