Q:

Hey peeps,

I have been playing off and on since launch. I have a Human Elementalist that I have specced pure fire. I just got to level 46 and my main Story with the Durmond Priory has taken me to Bloodtide Coast. In short, I am getting pummeled. I will break this out into general questions:

1 – I am using a scepter and dagger. Worked fine before but I can barely kill two enemies at my own level. Any tips for weapons and skills at this level? (Pure fire) — I am doing PVE only.

2 – Can I respec my skills and traits? I can’t decide which ones to use. I unlocked Greneth and the skill SUCKS for 20 points.

3 – None of my skills have combo openers, only combo finishers.. any tips?

Thanks again and any advice would be appreciated!

Going all fire is a glass cannon spec. You can put out a great deal of damage but you will die A LOT. You generally will not be able to kill things before you die.

Try this thread for a dagger/dagger spec – great survivability + dmg

Are you swapping attunements even though you are specced in fire?
You need to do that, seriously.

I use Scepter/ Focus for solo leveling and Staff as a back-up weapon. So can’t help there

You can respec your traits very cheaply at a trainer
I found Arcane trait line very usefull.

My ele is only at 50 so I’m new to the class too

Hope that helped at least a little

also in Bloodtide atm

As I recall, ring of fire→phoenix acts as a combo finisher stacking might. I only played scepter/dagger for 10 levels and went to staff. Also, the personal story is tough at times for all classes and doesn’t represent a breakdown for the ele. Put it on hold for a couple levels if you get stuck at any point.

Is your gear up to date? And what stats have you been going for?

You can swap out the major traits whenever you want. You can also reset the trait points at trainers, they are in each city and sometimes out in the zones (make sure you pick the reset traits option instead of buying a book).
As a S/D ele you have 1 combo field. Fire #4, Ring of Fire. This is a great combo field that you can stack 15 might stacks from if you do it right. Use Ring of Fire → Dragon’s Tooth, Phoenix and Arcane Wave. Swap to Earth and use Earthquake→Churning Earth. This deals tons of aoe damage and gives you up to 15 stacks of might (CE might not give you any if you are a bit slow).

While in Earth, also use the #2 skill, this gives you a bunch of extra toughness. Also apply the blinds from Air/Earth #3 liberally. Through proper use of that and the storm glyph in Earth I have often killed veterans without them landing a single hit.

As a general rule, you should be swapping attunements often. The fire auto-attack is very weak imo so when the other skills are on cooldown you should move between Air/Earth to get more damage.

The Unnamed[ThUn] – Desolation
Vayra – Elementalist
Forkrul Assail – Mesmer

I gave up on my elementalist for a month when he was around that level. (I find many professions have a range of levels where they kind of suck). Eventually I read around here and decided to try him again and he is great!

My main tip: Switch your attunements in battles!!! It takes a bit of practice…but even switching between two (say fire and earth) and spamming those skills will aid you a lot. When you limit yourself to one, you are constantly waiting on skills to recharge. When I switch I am never waiting on a skill to use.

2nd tip: Ice bow is great at killing crowds at all levels, it has helped a lot. Equip it, hit your #4 and then drop it and continue with your other weapon skills. (#5 is good against single enemies like bosses)

Very good stuff so far! I never switch attunements.. I have just stuck with pure fire.

My gear is just stuff I have either crafted or found. Nothing special but is there an armory page or easy way to link it?

I will also list my skills and traits if I can get a screenshot.

You’ll want to get used to attunement swapping. It’s really the only way to roll with the elementalist if you intend to get proper use out of it. I’ve been running a staff user and usually use Fire/Air for damage, plus Water to heal up in mid-combat.

If you’re going to run with daggers and such, you’ll be playing at closer range, so you’ll want either some vitality or toughness so you can take a hit and stay standing. You may also want to get some practice with Earth Attunement since that’s really one of the better ones for tanking, and close range glass cannon isn’t always that effective for squishy eles.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.
