Level Tome Use
you can trade them for spirit shards
simply use them on a level 80
head here to discuss wvw without fear of infractions
I assume you mean Tomes of Knowledge. Like the mouse-over description says, use them with a level 80 and you’ll get a spirit shard.
join lots of guilds and sump them in the treasury.
If these were tradeable I’d take them.
Do a key run a week. Uses up 8 tomes each week and gets you a key.
ANet may give it to you.
Would be nice if they levelled Elite specs.

Possible uses:
1) Use them on a level 80 to get spirit shards.
2) Donate them to your guild – they’re needed for some upgrades. (Remember to only put the ones you want to donate in your inventory as you don’t get asked how many to donate and can’t get them back out.)
3) Use them for black lion key runs (only possible once a week).
I like to keep enough scrolls/tomes so I can instantly level a character to 80 if I want to (I’ve only wanted to do it once but it’s nice to have the option). The rest go on some combination of the above.

I get that unlimited key runs might have been an issue. But these restrictions really should be daily. This was a fun guild activity that was eliminated by moving it to weekly.

Closing in on 1500 right now after all the guild upgrades, but admit, prefer that they didn’t allow this since it would have speed through the expansion even faster.

Well, thanks to this thread I’ve just learned that key farming can be a thing. I’m off to scold my alts for being too lazy to even start their personal stories. All they seem to do is stand around at a chest and store account bound junk that I will never use.

Yah, well it was a favorite activity of mine too and a pretty good source of gold back when Black Lion skins were worth something.
However I can’t fault a business for protecting its income and from what I can tell, selling keys brings them a fair amount. In spite of that they allowed unlimited free keys through this method for ~ 3 years. imo, the number of key runners simply became too high and they cut it back to more financially reasonable numbers of free keys.
4 keys a month. It isn’t great but you’ll get a free booster with each one as well as (slowly) inching your way to a full ticket.
Which will have to do.
As for your guild, why don’t you try this. Every other Sunday do 2 back to back key runs. On the second key run do all but the very last step. You’ll all get one key, then Monday (or when convenient) each person can do that last story instance and get the second key.

I can’t fault them either, but I stand by my stance of never paying real money for the kind of lottery ticket style RNG a Black Lion Chest + Key have. If others are ok with buying into that, more power to them.

I did it once. That taught me a lesson. I would rather do brain dead key runs than to buy RNG items like that. However other people must be shelling out big bucks for them. I’ve read threads where people spent hundreds of dollars on keys on one purchase and I don’t think buying small numbers of keys is uncommon at all.

I’ve seen occasional mentions that black lion keys are one of the most profitable items in the gem store. Can’t find an official source though so I’m not sure if that’s true.
I’m sort of surprised because I’d never buy them, but then I never saw the appeal of other kinds of gambling either, I prefer to know what I’m getting for my money. I can almost understand buying them if you enjoy that though, the one that confuses me is people who buy them because there was a mismatch between the amount of gems you can buy and the amount they needed and they had some ‘left over’. To my mind it’s far better to keep those gems for the next thing you actually want.
I have to admit I don’t do key runs often either, much less than once a week, but like I said gambling doesn’t appeal to me. But if I ever am tempted by it that’s the route I’d take, and the tomes come in useful for having that option.

I’m an alt-a-holic so always have use for Tomes. Still waiting for character slots to go on sale this month.
I’ve bought 25-packs of keys a few times now when they’ve been on sale. Originally, I would get tickets to get skins to sell. Now I use the skins myself. I think I have 3 full tickets + scraps in the bank, waiting for something new and shiny.
I get a bunch of junk (aka, boosters, canisters, etc) but also add to my dye and mini collections. If I already have them, I send them on to an alt account.

I have 19 toons and only WvW and PvP, I was going to make another 15 toons roughly but not while the Elite grind is associated with it. Sure I guess it’s good for people who only have their original 5 toon slots and also enjoy PvE, but it doesnt work out so well for those of us with jobs and limited play time.

I’m a similar boat as you – i have 27 toons that i use for WvW and PvP only.
Grinding out the Hero Points in WvW is impossible with the Soul Bound Proofs of Heroics. My guild runs a hardcore dedicated WvW comp, so kitting out certain classes or specs is nigh impossible.
I get 2 hours of WvW each night because i work + travel 15 hours a day.
The only way i can level my non-core toons is via WvW or EoTM on the weekends.
Meanwhile i have 100+ Proof Chests sitting on my Necro main which i can’t use on any of my alts.
