I just came back from a long pause and i recognized:

Leveling got the shaft big time!

Traits got delayed to later levels. Which makes you feel totally noob and weak if you were used to the old system.

I rather not imagine how bad this must feel for any new player! Totally sucks to level up right now!

Was there any explanation why the heck did they decide to kitten leveling and discourage new players from playing this game that way?

There must be someone totally out of control in the development department, right?

I agree to an extent, but I don’t necessarily think that, for me, the problem is feeling just slow and weak. I think for me the problem is that swinging a sword and swinging a sword again is not fun, but that’s pretty much what you do for most of the leveling experience now. Traits added a lot of depth to the gameplay. The changes they made have really negatively affected the fun factor during leveling.

ANet acknowledges the problems that the new features introduced in April, as a result of the ‘vertical/horizontal progression’-CDI’s, introduced. The September feature update will address various of these ‘problems’ by streamlining the levelling process and introducing new features that make levelling up feel like an accomplishment again.

I suspect the game will feel a lot better after the feature pack launches. Certainly to newbies, but I expect to enjoy it more as well.

New players isnt “used to the old system”, so it wont matter in that way. Still, even before the change there was quite a lot of “omg lvling in this game is sloow” in mapchat, and still is.
I have lvled a couple of alts in this new system, didnt really notice any big difference, but knowing where to go, what to do and how to gear up possibly made up for missing traits.

Leveled some classes to 80 and took a pause playing. Wanted to come back for an Elementalist. Learned about the changes with leveling & traits…
Now i’m looking for a new game. Bye bye ArenaNet. You’ve broken the game for a lot of players who want to have fun from low levels, not from level 30.

I leveld 4 80s in the old system starting with the very fist beginning and i can asure you there is a big difference.

If you need to “make up” for something you just said yourself its worse now, cause if you did everything right before you would be faster.

A big no no is how it feels to have no traits and how this stalled your gameplay and greaved diversity.

But good to hear they actually once see they made a mistake.

I have to say, as a brand new player to GW2, the leveling is far slower than other players have implied. I’ve been playing 3 days now and my highest level is a 20. it is very slow going and is a little discouraging, especially as I have been told the best way to level is mind0numbingly boring hours of laps in Edge of the Mists

@Rapthorne, the best way to level is not to pay attention to it… explore and do events!

- lvls 1/15 – explore your race capital, and do your race 1/15 area, then hop to LA, and from there Hop to other races captitals and do their starter area’s. Do your story quests.
- lvl 15/30 – still do events in lvl1/15 areas from other races, move to higher level area’s suited for your level, there are still about 3-4 of these. Also, do a lot of skill challenges so you can unlock skills as your utility slots unlock. Do more personal story.
- lvl 30/40 – You now have access to Elite skills, if you haven’t done skill challenges, some of your focus should be on at least doing those that you haven’t done yet.
- etc…

I didnt need to make up for it, I ment it could be the reason why I didnt really notice a big difference.
But I dont count levels, or xp for that matter, because this game is throwing xp around as no other game I tried. If anything, it would be nice to have the option to turn off xp, so you can keep yourself underlvled for sones you really like.
Anarchy online had this, you could stop lvling and saved up xp into a pool, if you wanted to lvl again you got it back on top of the usual xp, making lvling much faster.
But I am with you on the diversity matter, lots of ppl like playing around with builds and try stuff. But I guess anet finds this too confusing for new players.

The sad thing is, I can’t tell whether you’re being sarcastic or not posting that article. Because if anything, those changes make leveling worse. Personal story not available until level 10, stat increases coming in chunks (the implication is that you will literally now have empty levels), and downed state not available until level 5.

Add to this the horrendous trait changes made in April, and I pity anyone who walks into this mess. Also, why is Anet hyping up so many of these features that are just ports from the Chinese client? Do they think we can’t tell?

Not sure what they were thinking changing to the system that is currently in place, but at least they realize they made a mistake and will hopefully make it better in the September update.

Traits and skill should unlock quickly so you can spend time using them and trying builds as you level. That way you can learn to play your class BEFORE you get to level 80.

I’m quite serious. OP came back at the perfect time. This feature pack is practically aimed at him and others like him. Vet’s get a goodies announcement before the patch.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Completely-Pointless-Revamps/first#post4344058

Some of these things (backpacks, revamped leveling system) are certainly from the Chinese release.

It is simple to deduce we will not have an exact replica of the systems: gems to open unid’d dyes, etc.

These things were forced on them, necessary so that they could release in China. They’re not stupid. They won’t do that here. If I’m wrong, I eat my words.

So beyond chinese specifics for clarity’s sake (no gems membership thing for us)…

Not bothering with your unsubstantiated rhetoric on a system you’ve not even experienced yet or especially applicable as a vet, unless you’re an altoholic or something.

For which these changes are toted as good thing, not a bad thing. But hey maybe it does suck. Let’s find out first, hm?

In other words, it will give you flashing lights and bells, and a couple of crap items. This is like having a slot machine go off for a minor win, or giving a dog a treat when he does a trick. It trains you to keep repeating the action for more ‘rewards’, pure and simple.

So, they’re not really improving the leveling experience. They’re just making it more compulsive/addictive.

Was there any explanation why the heck did they decide to kitten leveling and discourage new players from playing this game that way?

I can think of one explanation. Last year, it was way too easy to level. A person could go from 0 to 80 in a few days. The easiest way to level was bypass the Personal Story, go to WvW, and join the karma train. When the player got to 80 there wasn’t a whole lot to do except level WvW and PvP ranks.

With Lapis, I discovered that GW2 made it way too easy to get him from 0 to 80. He got 0 to 40 on Personal Story and open world events. Then I went from 40 to 80 in WvW. He quickly outgrew the loot I took my time with this character too. I got from 0 to 80 in 2 weeks. I couldn’t enjoy the process of leveling, and the story was going way too fast. Lapis outgrew his gear before I could discover or craft it.. I really wanted to take my time but the game wouldn’t allow it. Worse, there weren’t a whole of challenges for people after level 80 at the time (except Orr & the extremely boring Southsun map). There is no hard mode in this game either (Something I hope Anet fixes in future updates).

After April’s update, I started 2 new characters (a human ele and a charr guardian) and I spent three weeks leveling them via Personal story and open world events. I discovered that I didn’t need the traits below level 30. At the low levels, I was too busy learning new skills. I also noticed that I couldn’t level up via crafting anymore. I got my ele to 500 jeweler/ 400 tailor, but the crafting barely affected her regular level. I haven’t put either character in WvW to see if they can still leveled that way. So far, it takes a long time to level these new characters.

I love the leveling changes. The game needs it to maintain its player base. If people level too fast, they’ll get bored of the game and go somewhere else.

I’m going to be creating a Norn character after Sept 9th so I can try the new system.

FYI — I’ve been playing for 11 months, and I have 4 characters on my acct. My main and second character (both sylvari @ lv. 80) were created near the end of last year. My human and charr are still at level 20 because RL has gotten in the way of the game.

What is this new system? Do you have a link?

I have been leveling since the game went on sale recently for 24.99 and I am just now about to reach level 30. It’s most certainly the slowest leveling I’ve experienced in an MMO. Though I can’t say if it’s bad or not, I just would like to experiment more with my looks while I level, and I cannot with how long it takes to clear maps.

EDIT: I see someone already posted a link, please disregard.

Considering at launch i had my first 80 within the 3rd day…It is slow.

Then again that was leveling with pre-nerf crafting experience, Playing the game, and exploring / doing events. All of which triggered far faster than they currently do. The games pace has been brought to a standstill worse than midday LA traffic.

Let’s not mention the abomination that is the “new” trait system. Because apparently encouraging build diversity and multiple playstyles is not a good idea. Instead let’s pigeon hole players (new/old) into using the meta builds and just buying select traits.

It’s time to abolish this system, give us back the book system and only use the unlock feature for brand new traits.

If they wanted to slow down leveling and force players into pve areas then they should have nerfed wvw XP for characters under level 80. Instead they nerfed the mobs in starter areas and screwed up the previous fun leveling experience.

I just leveled my first character completely since the change, I like the whole going out to find a trait is nice. The only thing that did strike me, is being very weak ( I was a mesmer though) but it wasn’t because of trait system, I outleveled my gear too quick. When I got a new set of gear, I was strong and could steamroll through everything but after 5 levels with the same gear, I took 20-30 seconds to kill even the weakest enemy

If that is what you read, then that is your perception of what they done based upon the article. From what I understood they refurbished the levelling process to make it a larger impact, from what I understood they also moved some traits around (though where that was mentioned exactly is unclear (I suspect Reddit). As well as changing how the story is delivered… and how levelling itself is presented.

Personally I reserve judgement until I actually experience it myself, which may well happen in a weeks time when this new system goes live. But I you want to go off on a tantrum based upon your perception of the article, that’s all fine by me. Just, you know, point your frustration in the right direction, as it sort of comes off as if you are blaming me for all of that… :P

For me the point here is that being a wvw-focused player i don’t really care about leveling. I’ve done it already, i’ve seen the story, i’ve played the game from 1 to 80 which now bores me to death and i just wish people would let me powerlevel an alt for roaming in peace without hearing “just enjoy exploring the map and the story etc etc”

And now i even have to spend gold to unlock the low traits wtf
