I was leveling a mesmer this morning and hit level 30. I went to select a trait and it looks like I have to do a personal story event to unlock the trait. Is there any way around this?

(And, WHY?!?!?!?! I do not like living story or personal story or whatever story. Why do we have to do this to unlock traits?)

You can buy the trait too, just visit a mesmer trainer.

If you cba to do Personal Story, map completion or events to get your traits – and you’re too cheap to buy them – well, sucks for you. Personally, I think it just weeds out the people who want a handout from the people who actually care to build their characters.

I think it weeds out people who would rather play the parts of the game they want, rather than be forced into doing 100% zone complete, or wvw, or personal story steps more than 10 levels too high, for one lousy trait.

I think it weeds out people who don’t have characters grandfathered in by the old system.

I think that if Anet shares your opinion that its customers need “weeding”, they need a new business plan.

How many builds have you unlocked under the new system?

I was grandfathered on 6 characters. I am currently working on a new character and I rather enjoy unlocking traits through play. It seems more “realistic” to have to do something other than spend coins to get traits. The fact that I enjoy most aspects of the game probably contributes to my attitude, all 6 of the grandfathered characters are level 80 with 100% map, which indicates that I do enjoy doing most everything in the game. The only traits that I see possibly being difficult to unlock are the ones in EB as I prefer playing in the BLs.

I currently have 11 level 80 characters on my main account (and one below 80), and another one on my secondary account. My highest map complete is 77%. I like alts, I like trying different builds, and I like finding a look for my characters. I do PvE and moderate amounts of roleplay in between.

I totally respect that you enjoy the new system. I do like the idea behind it, but find the implementation to be poor. I also like that you acknowledge that you are probably not typical among players, as to your play style.

Four characters were grandfathered in, three characters are undergoing the new trait system. I found absolutely nothing wrong with the new trait system – my mesmer was a bit of a pain but even before the trait changes mesmer was painful in regards to leveling.

I fail to see the point, though. WvW has always been linked to PvE and changing the acquisition of traits in PvE by doing PvE content just makes sense. In PvP they are still given freely, except for the 13th major trait in each line – even to newly created characters. Doing PvE content to unlock PvE versatility just seems like such a no-kitten concept I am surprised anyone actually finds the complaints legitimate.

That’s because it is. ANet needs to relook at where certain traits are acquired – locking certain master traits behind content designed for people with fully traited builds seems like a Catch 22.

That doesn’t make the system bad though, just flawed.

Nice.. Now look at the lvl reqs to do that PvE content or what it is …… for ADEPT traits !

9 of out the whole lot are lvl appropriate or do not req a large group event or PvP for new players = bad choice

That’s my problem with this system along with the specificity. Everything is too specific. I’d be fine with the unlock system if it was something more akin to how the dailies and monthlies are set up. Do ‘generic thing’, unlock trait.

If the purpose of these traits is to make you do things you might not normally do, why does everything have to be so dang specific?

I agree that the current system is too limiting and needs to be changed. For the low end traits, though, it’s cheap enough to just buy them. But I’d like to see options to unlock them instead of having to play a game mode you don’t enjoy.

I never understood this argument. Even for people who are WvW players you have to level up as if it were PvE and unless you do EotM ktrain you aren’t likely to get so many badges to pay for full exotic gear appropriate for WvW. The only people who have a “right” to complain about it would, potentially, be PvP players. However they get all of the first 12 traits in each line for free as it is.

What “game mode” are people being forced to play that they don’t enjoy that was any different prior to the update?

You can look at the change as Anet Griefing you or you can look at it as a challenge. You will be happier and find the game more enjoyable going with the later choice (as I doubt they are going to change it back).

Okay, I know this is hard for some people to believe, but this game is designed around the PvE, not the PvP. It’s what they talked about for a year before they annouced PvP. We certainly get more PvE updates. The sheer amount of PvE content is massive.

It’s the bulk of the game. I’m pretty sure the percentage of players that play this game for only SPvP for example is pretty small. It’s somewhat larger for WvW, which does have PvE elements in it anyway.

World completion already forced PvEer’s into WvW, where they have to take a slot sometimes of someone who actually wants to play WvW. I don’t really care personally because I play the entire game. SPvP, WvW, and PvE. But there are people who really don’t want to go explore WvW and get repeatedly killed by players. It’s a choice they shouldnt’ have to make.

Some of the new trait unlocks, if you’re trying to unlock them by content, make you go into WvW and even Edge of the Mists specifically.

I don’t think that’s a great idea.

I mean Anet has now implemented ways for PvPers to get dungeon armor and mats and such. It took them ages, but they did it.

I think anyone should be able to progress their game playing the style of content they prefer.

I’ve always assumed the new trait system was added as a response to all the GW1 players asking for something like the elite skill unlocks in that game.

For those who didn’t play it in GW1 in order to get elite skills (which were usually the key part of your build) and some normal skills you had to buy a Signet of Capture and then find and kill a specific boss somewhere in one of the PvE maps. Most of these were only accessible after you reached the max level and in some cases after you’d reached a certain point in the main story to unlock the areas.

There was an alternative though, you could spend PvP faction points to unlock it on your account and then buy a skill tome to add it to that specific character.

It’s not so much game mode as it is parts of the game. Not all PvE players enjoy EVERYTHING in PvE, because PvE encompasses a lot of stuff. And I refuse to break down and buy traits when they formerly cost less than 5g (and no skill points) for the whole lot. So when the option is “Get 100% Map Completion in Lornar’s Pass” or “pay skill points and the coin amount it previously cost to unlock this entire tier” for a single trait, I’m going to have to stick with my assertion that it’s bad.

When the flaws outnumber the potential good of a system, it’s bad.

The nicest thing I can say about Personal Story, map completion OR events is…….NO KITTEN THANKS.

I do build my character. She is level 36 now and that is mostly from PvP. Having my decoy and blink utilities helps me survive against mobs and lvl 80’s. Having traits would also really help out, particularly the deceptive decoy trait.

I do not like how the adept line is the only one I have access to right now. Not like it matters. The trait can only be unlocked by going to a level 60 map. I’m taking the time to level up this character on a new account (needed a new account to play on EU servers) and I do not see how this qualifies as a handout. The system in place before the update was fine.

I’ll probably end up buying the traits. I wonder how pricey they are. I already spend lots of silver on food and sharpening stones for WvW, not to mention the upgrades and siege needed. I should have enough by the time I hit 80. The loot boxes from PvP are FINALLY decent. Now, if only WvW boxes get a lil buff, that’d be nice. I actually have my lvl 80 chest piece, sword, pistol, greatsword and other items just from PvP. Whoever thought that idea up rocks. People were spending lots of time fighting other players and getting bad loot compared to the same amount of time being spent farming dungeons and them getting amazing loot. I don’t like PvE because once you do something, it’s the same each and every time. So boring. PvP and WvW pits you againts other players. So fun!

I did build my characters on my other account. I’m currently working on a mesmer and thief on my EU account. They have their own distinct looks (compared to my NA characters) and they’re awesome. I just wish I could get access to things I USED to have access to. And, no, no matter what hare-brained scheme they come up with next, they will not force PvE down my throat.

I don’t think being `cheap` is a fair characterization. When you are working up to level 80, skill points are at a premium since the weapon skills are such a massive sink for them. Not everyone is going to have a stack of skill point scrolls on hand to deal with this.

The good thing about the GW1 system is that you only had to unlock something one time for your entire account, after that accessing it with multiple characters was a far less – onerous chore.

It unlocked it for use on heroes, but I don’t think it unlocked it for other characters that had the same class (or even secondary class)…….or I did a LOT of unneeded unlocks in Shiverpeaks and Ring of Fire zones…. I’m talking about PvE unlocks here.

As I said, it was(? still is, I assume) a one-time account unlock, which did apply to Heroes. To get it unlocked for a particular character, you’d either have to specifically capture the skill again or unlock it with the Elite Tome. Depending on how annoying the skill is to get (and I think the Wurm hidden in the gigantic Shiverpeaks zone was one of the worst), it is less effort to acquire the Tomes than to capture the skill multiple times.

I’d be less annoyed with the Trait system if it was account-unlocked, but I assume it’s character-unlocked.

It is, but the tomes are rather rare drop (and class specific, so you could get a Mesmer tome but need a Necro skill) and I’d rather rely on earning gold and SPs than RNG.

Also, the lack of an actual Trading Post in GW1 means a good bit of wasted time in Kamadan trying to sell the tome you got and then buy the one you need…PitA.

The unlocks came first when they started selling the PvP skill packs (I think between Factions and Nightfall releases). Tomes did not come out until AFTER Eye of the North (as I recall).

I get the distinct feeling they will be tweaking the new system over the next few months to get it right. It is certainly flawed, but I think the biggest “gotcha” about it is all the abrupt changes it tossed at long time players all at once. On the other hand, I’m not sure a “gradual” change would not have been received any better as the dislike would have been applied over a longer period of time.
