When Heart of Thorns (or as Angry Joe continually called it while standing next to Colin “Hearts of Thorn”) releases there will undoubtedly be many players of GW2 who don’t immediately or ever buy the xpac. My question is simple one, what will life in game be like for those players who don’t purchase it?

From what we’ve been told they will not have access to the following (correct me If I’m wrong)

1. Revenant class
2. New map area
3. Specializations
4. Mastery System

The mastery system will be introduced game wide but only to those with the xpac but I’m certain many lines will be new map specific so players without it won’t get and won’t need those anyways.

If you run dungeons or fractals life without the xpac shouldn’t have an impact as they’ve announced nothing new for either of those modes.

WvW players might not have access to the new WvW map but ehh just live on EB and kill away.

It will be interesting to see what life is like without HoT.

I believe it was also mentioned that you wont have access to mastery and specialization features as well. You will probably have the same game you do now save the camera and mechanic updates.

It will be interesting to see how they handle stronghold being in the queue for conquest for ppl without the expac and wvw map that some ppl on the server won’t to be able to access

Mastery is going game wide I’m sure I’ve heard them say I think you may be right about specializations though.

Do you think there will be that many who don’t buy it? I would guess a very large majority of anybody who is still actively playing will buy it, because if you plan on continuing to play the game, why would you not get the expansion? Aside from not having the money right away, but let’s be serious, it probably won’t be more than $40.

Its not very clear but under the question “How do I get masterys?” It says the ability to trait them is unlocked for all players that own Heart of Thorns. Also I think its been mentioned on a interview.

Yes they are expanded to the core game but they made it sound like you have to own the expansion.

Well I personally know many players who’ve quit so they won’t buy it unless they come back to test the game first. Let’s say they reinstall the game post xpac to see what the game is like first, which is would make sense. There are players who will refuse on principal as they thought they wouldn’t have to buy an xpac ever possibly.

Well as far as will everyone get it… I havent heard anyone say that the do not want it while still continuing to play. It seems obvious you will be at a handicap if you don’t own it. This isnt much different from gw1 as far as having all the skills and professions full owners had vrs people that were missing some expansions.

My guess is it’d be a bit like when I first got Guild Wars 1: I bought Prophecies, just after Factions was released.

Which meant I was still able to play everything in the game I’d bought exactly as if I’d gotten it before the second campaign came out. The only problem was people kept suggesting I should use skills I didn’t have access to, and talking about areas I couldn’t go. It was frustrating occasionally but not a big problem.

Do you think there will be that many who don’t buy it? Newer players probably won’t buy it right away. Especially those who don’t feel the need to rush to level 80. If you’ve just bought a game and you’re looking at dozens or hundreds of hours to complete what you’ve already got there’s not much point in buying the expansion right away.

Specializations require the xpac purchase.
Masteries require the xpac purchase.
Revenent requires the purchase.
Any future living story releases will require the xpac purchase

The new WvW maps and PvP mode; however, do not. This is done to not split the playbase of these modes.

This has all been confirmed in the assorted blogs and PAX interviews (and we were discussing some of it in a different thread already)

Edit: As for what that means for “vanilla” players… not much really. Life should pretty much continue as per usual, except they’ll now see specialized classes and revenents joining in their parties.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Not all mastery requires the xpac, only those who are part of certain region;

“With the launch of Heart of Thorns, there will be two Mastery regions: the Heart of Maguuma, encompassing all PvE zones that are part of the Heart of Thorns expansion, and the core Guild Wars 2 world, encompassing all PvE zones currently available in the game today….Some Mastery points will come from content that existing players may have already completed, and these Mastery points will be automatically awarded to you with the release of Heart of Thorns, allowing you to get started on your Mastery journey right away.”

Link: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/reimagining-progression-the-mastery-system/

EDIT: There’s a caveat; "The ability to train Masteries is unlocked at level 80 for all players that own Heart of Thorns. "

As far as Living World updates, there are some conflicting statements about its future.

Here, Colin states LW will definitely continue in ‘Vanilla’ Tyria (around 6 minutes in):

http://www.gamebreaker.tv/news-main/mmorpg/guild-wars-2-heart-thorns-interview-game-director-colin-johanson/

And, I believe it is in the interview with Angry Joe that Colin states that the LW updates will be exclusively bound to the expansion.

Thus, hard to say what will happen with Living World/Story updates. =/

4. Mastery System (Incorrect) / They will have partial access.

WvW players might not have access to the new WvW map but ehh just live on EB and kill away.

WvW map will be on a rotation, and you will not need the expansion to play it.

In the AJ vid Colin stated that the “vanilla” world will be left as is and any further LS ev work will be on the stuff happening moving forward with the story (xpac content).

He also notes that although the WvW map will be open to all, that it will also incorporate things that only those with the xpac can take advantage of, so if you don’t have the xpac, don’t expect to get the full experience with the new map in WvW.

Or you could sit in Lion’s Arch and flip the trading post for a year until the expansion is 75% off

Life without HoT… Cold.

No, but really, I like gw2… But at the same time there are things that have needed to be addressed for a long time.

If they don’t address those things, or if they charge more than what I feel it is worth (about 25-30 usd from what they have identified as large things that the xpac will bring)… I will simply wait for a sale or not buy it. It is really that simple. I like the game, but I’m not tied to it to the point where I am not weighing the worth of the xpac.

HoT = Feature Pack + New Area + New Class.

feature pack like guild guild halls, mastery system and new pvp map should be available to all players regardless you have HoT or not.

Should be but won’t. Masteries are xpac only as are specializations which brings serious have vs have not into pvp if those are usable.

Okay I don’t get those who call HoT a feature pack. Aside from giving us a whole new story (which I assume won’t be just a chapter) and a new profession, it’s also giving us new specializations which comes with the use of a new weapon, new elite skill, new healing skill, new utility skill and new traits for each profession via the specialization. Guild Halls and harder content (which they’ve hardly touched on yet). New technology for skills. You call that a feature pack?

Okay then.

Well I only care about my necromancer and ranger and making builds for the two. My ranger is solid but I’m interested in the necromancer specialization. So I’ll only be getting the expansion if the necromancer specialization is interesting enough and if the revenant has access to 100% mobility in some form without traveler runes.

Speaking of specializations, I’m assuming they will rear their heads in pvp zones which sounds like a recipe for disaster.

@Vayne: They probably call it a feature pack by comparison to other mmo’s because anets definition of a feature pack is usually mediocre at best.

I don’t understand if you play the game and have a max level character why you wouldn’t buy the expansion. $40 is really not that much. Especially considering all that comes with it.

Pretty sure that the revenant doesn’t have out of combat speed boost, at least according to one of the interviews.

As for what they have in other games, it’s hardly relevant, because without raising the level cap and a new tier of gear, it’s just a bunch of zones you play through to get to the last zone in most games, and you never go back to those zones again. And that’s what the problem has always been.

The only thing that should really be compared is how long you can play the expansion without getting through all the content. It takes a month or two to get done with a WoW expansion pretty much completely.

We certainly don’t get a month or two out of feature packs.

3. New PVP map (Incorrect)
4. Mastery System (Incorrect) / They will have partial access.

WvW players might not have access to the new WvW map but ehh just live on EB and kill away.

WvW map will be on a rotation, and you will not need the expansion to play it.

If you have a link to that confirmation I’ll edit it.

I think it was in the interview with Jebro. https://youtu.be/Ucihndtkmcs?t=7m30s around here.

Yeah, mastery system is a bit fuzzy for me too.
Also dimly remember the thing about regional masteries. So HoT specific and “the others” mainly about precursor creation masteries or something.

Dito with the pricing, if it´s above 30€ I´ll pass and wait for the Christmas sale.
Frikken “Skyrim Online” is going F2P this month Anet, hope you haven´t forgotten that.

This is the clearest explanation of masteries I know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlBFoHs_siY

Both sets of masteries are still only available for owners of HoT.

It’s going buy to play, not F2P. In addition, like GW2, it has a ‘gem store’ (although it has a different name.. can’t remember, crown store maybe?). There will also be DLC you have to pay for (or which you can buy with crowns I think).
