Lifting armor restrictions for wardrobe?
Probably not, but I wish we could.
The game has so much screen clutter and visual messiness already, I don’t see this impacting gameplay (eg- class identification, which is already impossible) in any way and it would give more customization options to everyone. Why not go for it.

You should see Wildstar that’s screen clutter over the top, GW2 is a work of art in comparison
I also was thinking would this mess w/pvp (class identification), but we already have usable Outfits, and Standard Enemy Models.
I’m not sure if it’s possible in this game, or if Anet has a stance on this. No google search comment to be found.
You want to search for threads about mixing armor weights, not wardrobe skins, and you’ll find oodles of discussion of it and why it cannot be done. Not shouldn’t, not would take some work, literally cannot be done.
Short short short form: The three weights are all on different animation “skeletons” that not only won’t fit together, they’ll cause huge graphics glitches if you try.
… ok, it could be done. If they designed new software and completely remade every piece of armor to fit the new system, with only the general look of the pieces retained (though they wouldn’t transfer the art, they’d redraw it). That’s an enormous amount of man hours that they need for other game development purposes.
It’s regrettable that in early game design they rigged the armors that way, but now it’s embedded deeply and must be lived with.
This is an excellent idea, and I have no idea why there would be an issue with it from a gameplay standpoint. It would also alleviate some of the common complaints people have about gear variety for certain armor tiers.
Again, it’s not a gameplay issue, it’s not a clipping issue, it’s a technical issue that completely bars this from happening.
/mutters about googling up all the threads and submitting a list for merging

Donari is correct, this is a technical issue with how the code is written. One of the devs explained it back when they converted town clothes into outfits, and why town clothes could not simply become armor skins. It has everything to do with the underlying mesh system for each armor weight, which town clothes were essentially a 4th armor weight mesh. They would need to completely rework this underlying system to achieve the desired goal as set forth by the OP. Yes it would indeed be nice if we could mix and match not only all of the armors across weight barriers, but the outfits as well; however it is not even feasible with the current system in place.

Speak for yourself, I love WS’ telegraph system. Is so easy and intuitive I was responding to the different skill types (charge up, persistent aoe, etc) shown by the telegraph textures before I consciously knew the telegraphs were changing. Also, the a mount of customization is great, from telegraph colors and patterns to customizing OTHER PEOPLE’s spell effects so you can see your own more easily. It’s brilliant.
Now, both games suffer when you start piling more people onto it. The difference is that GW2’s “clutter overload” threshold is somewhere between 1-3 people, and WS’ is somewhere between 4-10. Depending on encounter, class, etc, ofc.

Given the technological restrictions, I’d like to see the ability to create your own custom outfits. So you couldn’t mix and match weight classes (unless they somehow decide to re-make every armor so they work together), but you could take a custom set of heavy armor turn it into an outfit for your account, probably for some amount of gems, and then wear it as a light or medium character or vice versa.
The best explanation I’ve seen for why armour weights can’t mix and what kind of clipping issues would happen (if made possible), given by a fellow forum-poster:
The reason it won’t happen is because armor for different weights splits differently. For light and heavy, it splits entirely at the waist; any long coats or dresses have the bottom half of the coat or dress as part of the “pants.” However, on medium armor, legs are separate and long coats and skirts are a part of the top, with legs worn under them. This is also why you won’t see medium armor skins being given to light and heavy classes, or light/heavy armor being given to medium professions.
The amount of clipping on certain professions, depending on how they split it up, would be egregious. Split an outfit like light/heavy, and medium coats will clip outrageously with the bottom half of the outfit. Split it like medium armor, and light/heavy bottoms will clip. People would buy the skins and then be absolutely outraged at the amount of clipping.
So yes, clipping is the reason, but it would be far worse than current armors ever clip, and that is why they won’t do it.
(This was a post from a similar thread, but about making outfits into armour parts that could be mixed and matched with the current wardrobe system)
Well that’s too bad they dug kitten that deep that no future feature corrections could be applied. I know comparing what is possible in one mmo doesn’t mean it should be possible for all, but that’s still an unfortunate answer.
and Rhyse I wasn’t talking about the telegraph system (and the many reasons why it’s such a poor implementation to combat) but the screen clutter as a whole.
…not sure why the word [hole] got the kitten treatment?

…not sure why the word [hole] got the kitten treatment?
Because of the letter ‘a’ that came before it. the same thing happens to the word ‘it’ if it comes after a word that ends in ‘t’
I’m a big fan of GW2 wardrobe/dye customization in comparison to other games, but a few other mmo’s have done away with armor restrictions to fill wardrobe slots, any chance we will see that down the road?
Thanks~
I was thinking about that same thing earlier and I kind of would like for the armor restrictions to be lifted on transmog (or GW2’s equivalent) but on the other hand, it kind of makes sense.
After all, what self respecting Asura Warrior heckbent on destroying everything that gets in his way would DARE wear a dress? But seriously, in a way, the restrictions make sense. Hopefully, with HoT on the horizon we’ll see more excellent skins and dyes which will make up ‘the difference’.
This is kinda why I would love to eventually have a 10th profession for advanced players – built around the primary mechanic of swapping between armor sets instead of weapons.
You would have to maintain an armor set of each class, and swapping between them with the F1-3 skills would affect your all your skills a little bit like an attunement or legend swap, (probably just replacing their secondary instead of primary effects). Don light armor to spread some aoe pain, switch to medium to kite or chase, and pop into heavy when you need to be in the thick of it.
But that’s just a dream of mine: changing the character’s look and feel more drastically with the context of the action, via the mighty and untapped power of the costume change!
