The degree is arbitrary. The definition’s blurred.
If I’m to choose between one evil and another, I’d rather not choose at all.
So why shouldn’t a warrior be able to don a leather tunic or a robe? It would not be difficult to add this feature. It would be mainly for RP reasons since changing stats at this stage of the game would result in having broken professions. A warrior should be able to use all 3 tiers, mediums the last 2 and well cloth users are stuck. Ideas? Agree disagree? I would love to have my warrior with 2 swords and a longbow prancing around in Falconers armor.
Why do Warriors or any heavy profession get 3 choices, and light profession get only 1? I’m afraid I fail to see the logic behind this. Are you saying a Norn Necromancer hasn’t the muscle to don heavy armor, for example?
Well I’m going mostly by DnD logic. And norn heavy armor will be bigger and heavier then a human one so no not really. A norn necromancer never learned to use heavy armor and would thus be ineffective in it. (Arcane spell failure…)
I really hope they eventually allow us to use any skin for our look, including town clothes.
We already have several parts that can be used on any class of armor, blurring the lines between the classes. We have a few more that look like they belong in a different tier than they really are. I doubt that much would be lost by taking the final leap to allowing any armor look on any class, and we’d gain some great customization flexibility.

Well, this game, like practically every game in like 10 years completely lacks any “RP”, so why something like this should be implemented?
Also if I remember correctly, the heavier armor is, the bigger is the mobility penalty, right? Well, i think there is nothing more needed to say, right?
Untrue. Look around the forum for a bit. A lot of people rp. I personally don’t like the heavy armors. And mobility penalty should be a thing but it’s so hard to balance.
I’m an RPer.
I want my Iron Legion charr engineer to be able to dress like a tank, because if anyone knows how to make good armor, it’s her.
I want my female human (noble) thief to be able to dress in the flowing dresses that light armor provides.
I want my norn elementalist to wear a trenchcoat while tossing out fireballs and lightningbolts.
Well, guys, maybe you should search the internet a bit, you know, just to find out what RP really means before you write such comments….
Ever heard the word “tabletop”?

Very RP. Much agree.

RP = Role play
When I play dnd we can only RP voices and actions because of the lack of time and resources.
In GW2 you can RP you character mostly by choosing armor and skills. All i said that by increasing the availability of armors that you can equip this experience would be much deeper.

Within arm’s reach of where I’m sitting as I type this, I have access to books for AD&D 2nd Edition, D&D 3.0, 3.5, and 4th Edition, Shadowrun, both old and new World of Darkness (White Wolf stuff), d20 Modern, and Rifts.
If I get out of the chair, I have access to books for GURPS, 1st Edition D&D, Pathfinder (currently in the front room, because that’s what I’ve been playing lately), Tales From the Floating Vagabond, some 3.5 compatible source books, Hero system and Champions, Star Trek RPG, Star Wars RPG, Marvel Super Heroes, Monte Cook’s Arcana Unearthed, Alternity, and some of the “The Primal Order” books put out by WotC before they made Magic.
If I get into my roommate’s stuff as well, then I also have access to Big Eyes Small Mouth, Human Occupied Landfill, Macho Women with Guns, the Wheel of Time RPG, Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG, and one or two others I’m sure I’ve forgotten.
I’ve RPed online in Everquest, EQ2, Star Wars Galaxies, Champions Online, City of Heroes (this was a true RPers paradise), and now Guild Wars 2.
Oh, and I’m also doing some text only RP in Skype, continuing the story of some of our CoH characters.
I started RPing 24 years ago. That’s longer than some of my fellow GW2 players have been alive. So… yeah. It’s kind of a big thing for me, and I would love to see GW2 start stepping up to the plate and becoming more RP friendly.
The most practical way I could see this working would be if characters could equip armor into town clothes slots, so that they could equip them regardless of armor class without tripping up combat. While one could argue that heavy classes would be handicapping themselves by dressing in medium/light armor, it’s still an unattractive muddying of of the waters. If it’s a roleplaying function, best to keep it entirely in a roleplaying capacity.
If they did implement this, I’d like to see it for all armor classes, not just stepping down by weight class. One could argue that heavy armor, for flavor reasons, could only be worn by heavy classes, because only they know how to properly handle all the straps and buckles and whatnot, but that would be ridiculously nit-picky in a game that lets you swim in full plate.
Personally, I can’t say I care too much for the idea of wearing other armor weights; I like classes to, by and large, look like their weight, even if that limits their aesthetic options. It wouldn’t be particularly disruptive, however, (or it wouldn’t have to be, anyway,) so I don’t feel very strongly about it.

Because there’s no way a statement in this form can be condescending and narrow-minded. Remember, kids, if you’re not doing it my way, you’re doing it wrong.
Should just allow to mix armors as you please. Would create some nice combinations.
“but then I can’t tell the class from armors!” is not an argument as long as there are asuras.

But if you think about it, if you’ve been using heavy armour to train to fight all your life, then suddenly switch to a very much lighter armor, you’ll completely mess up your balance, overswing your sword, overextend your attacks and generally fight like a moron.
So, why not just abandon logic?

Not sure if you ever used a sword or armor before but you usually start trainig with no armor. Gradually you can use chain or plate ( Most people skip leather tunics). So trust me when i tell you you will not mess up your balance or overswing.

The problem with this as an answer is, it’s less and less possible as time goes on.
You see a norn in front of you. They have the toxic shoulders and gloves, the injector backpack, and a Dragon Bash helm. Or maybe it’s the Hellfire shoulders and gloves, jetpack back pack, and a Queen’s Jubilee mask. None of those items tell you what armor type they are, and so you have to look past them to tell.
Weapons don’t really help either. Swords, Great Swords, and Axes are all shared across all three class groups, and that list will grow over time as they add weapons to more classes.
The only sure way to tell the armor class at a glance is to look at the torso and legs, but even there you run into some armors that look like a different armor type. As they add in more armor skins, that too will eventually get worse.
Now, I don’t PvP in any form, so I don’t know how important it is to tell what class or group of classes someone may be at a glance. But armor’s not the most reliable way to tell, and it’s going to get worse. It might be a good idea to suggest that they add in some other way to tell, such as a class symbol hovering over the head of anyone you target in PvP. But resisting armor mixing is only going to slow the inevitable.

You can’t anyway if they are asura.
Anet did give you lighter armor to rp all you want. Its called town clothes.

Well perhaps some casters have been warriors before they went to the school of magic? So they could very well know how to use plate armor depending on their history.

Which is done by icon not the gear they are wearing.
You’ll rarely be able to tell the exact profession by armor alone. Cloth you still have three, same with leather. It isn’t their gear telling you the professions, but the icon that goes when you target them.
Also armor appearance is optional, the old default setting is still there that sets everyone to the same generic model.
Suggestion: make all armor usable as town clothes. However, if light armored characters use heavy armors, they get an encumbered or RP walk. If heavy armored use light, they sort of float, really slow, at the same speed as RP walk. It would be hilarious. I’d love it.
Hehehe

Press tab, look at the class picture next to their name that tells you what class they are. That’s how you tell what class someone is, “at a glance”.

Sure why not! You could play a renegade elementalist. He/She desterted the army and got into burning things. Still knows how to wear plate.
