List of Balance Problems

Initially had this labeled as “Why QQ threads annoy me” kind of title but then thought of maybe a more constructive bent. This thread will be long :P It is meant for new players to get an understanding and for old players to add to.

First off quick preface, played since the beginning, played all classes., working on my 9th 80.

So every class has its issues. And critiques I get. But it really annoys me when I see a post saying their class is the worst, always has been, no one understands how bad it is…etc. Crying for crying’s sake doesn’t do any good.

So lets compile a (semi) concise list of problems rather than just saying X class sucks Buff X class. Because that could mean a whole lot of things as well as compare the classes relative to the other classes and where they lack.

Thieves and elementalists lack build diversity and have very underwhelming elites except for specific circumstances (both have elite options rather underwhelming in pve both are pigeon holed into pretty specific builds in pvp)

Necromancers and rangers are not a part of (most) metas and generally lack advanced options and builds for vet players (especially lacking in decent dungeon-fractal options which is concerning for upcoming HoT) I think its a lack of advanced build options more than anything for these classes than any raw numerical disadvantage that leads to a perception of undesirability. One thing to note for any new players reading this is that necros have always had a place in WvW as artillery.

Warrior and engineer are tricky double edged swords in terms of balance. They sort of gained power but also lost some power with the last big update. With the damage increase in pvp and the loss of the ability to cherry pick traits these two got hit the hardest I think when comparing the total/relative power shifts. Without careful attention they will fall out of general use pretty quickly in PvP. Warrior should always be safe in PvE for banners but engi was already shaky there.

Mesmer and guardian are in probably the best positions. For both variety and power in all modes. I think mesmer will become part of the pvp meta if not overly nerfed. Guardian maybe lacks a little in build diversity but still has more than some classes (having at least two viable builds in pvp – medi and bunker.) Both now bring exceptional utility for PvE groups with quickness, slow, reflects, and the new slow for mes, etc.

So that is my general summary…not sure how much I like it or how complete it is, but my idea was to start something like this with more input along these lines. Like if necro is lacking why is it lacking? What would it take to get it to become part of the PvE meta dungeon runs? You can’t simply jack up DPS numbers then you run the risk of them becoming OP in PvP.
