So in order I’m interested to see how the forum community would list the classes in order they want in there dungeon runs. All classes are built in the current meta so list just according to the class itself.

Guardian
Warrior
Ele
Mesmer
Engi
Ranger
Thief
Necro

I could probably swap Mesmer and engi but that’s my opinion.

A lot of who you would want to bring depends greatly on what dungeon you’re running and the rest of the composition.

For example, there are paths where you can bump Ranger over Thief and Engi because Frost Spirit and Spotter along with Warrior’s buffs create a freakin’ buzzsaw of damage along with a couple eles and a guardian.

Other paths (like Arah) can have bosses like Lupicus melt in seconds with a good Mesmer in the party.

It’s kinda funny in that regard, how there’s kinda a meta within the dungeon meta.

For fractals:

Thief
Engi
Ranger
Mesmer
necro

As someone who pugs 100% of my fractals, it has gotten to the point where I generally hate having anything but warrs, guards and eles in my runs. I groan when I get a party that is mostly light armored classes because they never seem to do well.

It seems like the unspoken rule of mesmering and rangering is to use your GS/longbow and knock every enemy you can out of melee range and then die.

The rest of the dungeons are so easy it barely matters what classes join.

I only rank them that high because they have decent DPS and stealth is good in pugs for skipping and reviving people when they die. A bad thief is worse than useless though.

imo they are second tier, but far far below first tier (ele, guard, warr)

Thief you really need to know the fights to be most effective. From pugs I dont see many players eve knowing there class at all, the fights or even trying half the time.

Just coe for example: Full ascended, with have might/vul stack, PW (pistol whip) on average hits 20k, having Blinds against Dogs makes there 10-15k pounce miss.

The Trait Improvisation gives thieves 10% more damage with ele weapons: Fighting Alpha in Corner with SoM (Signet of malice heal) + FGS + traits + 200 power from stealth trait you will stay alive and do more damage than all but the ele.

Stealth to skip the Destroyers, Planets and Trash (up to golem).

If no reflects, Dagger storm will give a 8sec Reflect with aoe damage on a good CD for an elite skill (90sec)

If no weapon in hand d/d on a boss (with smoke screen) lets same the Golem (with no protection) 20k back stabs with 3-7k autos, and when at25% and lower (I like to do it at 10%) use smoke screen, stand behind and HS (heart seeker) behind, it will stealth you and give you the 200 power for 15K+ hits 4-5 times in a row within 2-3sec.

Then there is Arah/Cm where I love thiefs so much

Necro has decently high single target burst from wells and chaining focus 4 and warhorn 5 with dagger autos.. but everything else is right. I wish they’d get a trait that boosts allies crit damage or something like that.

I tend to care more about the player behind the class than the class itself. I’ll take a Necro/Ranger that knows his stuff over a PVT Warrior who camps 1200 range with a rifle. Personally I’d list as follows:
Guardian – Wall of Reflection is a must when puging.
Elementalist – Fiery Greatsword is amazing when stacking, plus Frostbow trivializes some areas in dungeons, like Graveling burrows.
Warrior – Heavy armor, great DPS support. I tend to like seeing them in pugs because they’re harder to play badly.
Thief – Bursting is nice, plus the dark fields for blinds and group stealth aren’t bad.
Mesmer – They bring some fun to the table, with reflections, boons, and portal.
Engi – Haven’t had much experience with them, but they seem to offer some support which is always welcome.
Ranger – Bearbow has ruined the reputation of this class for me. I’m worried when I see one join a pug, but I won’t turn them away. They can be played well, and I appreciate the spirit support, but it’s done too infrequently for me to rank them highly.
Necromancer – Not a whole lot of group support, and with the condition cap they don’t play well with others.

For Dungeon runs:

Warrior [One shout heal zerker with trooper runes if all warrior]
Elementalist
Guardian
Mesmer/Engie
Thief [May be bumped up now that there is dagger cleave]
Ranger
Necro

Necro is good, just for PVP. It seems to be a floating class for any team dungeon runs, because anything it -can- do, can be done quicker with another class.

conditions don’t really matter in PVE. CC matters, but the things they’d be best suited on have defiance and people seem to largely not know how that works, so….burstitdown?’

I don’t think any of these classes are bad at all, but when running dungeons, the predictable mob AI just makes no-guff-burst-it work best.

I’d take a necro and ranger any day. I wouldnt look for them though.

Meta is derived from Metagaming, which defines actions and strategies derived before a match even begins, that can affect the outcome of the match.

Meta is simplified to mean “The currently widely-acknowledged effective builds that are provided the least resistance, or, (in PVP) require the most effort to counteract/win against.”

It’s synonymous with “path of least resistance” right now. but it stemmed from counterplay that took advantage of opponent weaknesses that could not simply be strengthened through different strategies.

So much hate for mesmers here lol it’s not like I disagree with the lists here though. Despite having mesmer as my main character which I use in dungeons all the time, I’d easily agree it’s low on the list of optimal classes for dungeons for a variety of reasons:

1) The desirable traits are more spread out through trait lines than other classes (as pointed out by Nike of DnT and more,) making a maximum damage build on mesmer virtually impossible to match the raw dps of classes like warrior.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnqpIQ4jYuU&list=UU2XVi6QB_uuPFaqq5vzMvAw

2) The bugs. Mesmer is one of the most (if not the absolute most) buggy classes in the game when it comes to illusion AI. One of the most useful illusions for dungeons sadly happens to be the buggiest of all (the iWarden, focus 5.) Illusions will often stand idle when summoned and sometimes even choose to attack the wrong target (which could pull unwanted agro from across the map if they decide to go full leroy on your team. The devs have tried and failed fixing the mesmer bugs many times and here we are with more bugs than ever. (The iWarden bug is well demonstrated by these 5 mesmers in Arah)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqgJR5NUdTo

3) Does it make things faster? In bad to decent teams, yes. The shortcuts and reflects are amazing for making every dungeon a breeze if you are an awesome mesmer. In the best groups however, the lower dps only slows the overall dungeon time when players are experienced enough to dodge attacks and put out maximum dps. The time saved for portal skips doesn’t make up for the time lost with the lower dps in truly experienced groups.

Overall, I’d say my rankings of dungeon meta would be
warrior
guardian
elementalist
thief
mesmer
ranger
engineer
necro

On a final note, a good indication of a bad mesmer is their use of the gs. It is good for some situations, but s/s+s/f is the best combination for most situations as the gs does more damage when further away, making it useless in stacking.

tier 2: high tier:

obviously it will vary based on skill, a well played shatter or PU mesmer can be OP, assume standard player vs standard player for this list.

We’re looking for, ideally:

Warrior/Guard/Engie/Mesmer/Necro/Ranger/Thief/Ele

They’re getting close but not there yet. It’s hard to sift the “QQ” from the “this is actually over/underpowered for X valid reasons”, which is probably why Anet takes so long to balance. They release a patch, watch us whine for half a year, then fix it slowly.
