Living Story too hard?

You should probably level a bit more to match the level of the story. go to different places of different races.
I do not think you understand, Zygomaticus. You cannot do it unless you are level 80.
I have full exo gear, too.

If he’s doing that he’s 80. You can’t do that if you’re not. Yes, this can be done with a party and it’s a lot more fun. My guild does living story stuff together, and even personal story stuff together.
Keep in mind stuff does scale when more people are in the mix.
Also what profession are you and what is your build?

Um, I don’t think you can level much past 80…
@OP…I did it solo, maybe if you have a character with some kind of minion? Or better health options on your character?
Or easier, take someone in with you? Or two or three?
The first time I did that I soloed it on my Elementalist and lost more armor than I have in a long time. But despite her squishiness, I enjoyed myself and made it through. I don’t know if I’ll take my next character in with other players or not, but just knowing what I’m facing and how to deal with it ahead of time should make a world of difference. The first time you do anything new is a learning experience. I bet you do much better next time.
Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.

You’re probably using your dodges too much, there is a pattern to his attacks and most can be evaded by proper positioning,
I found it to be a really nice encounter (with the unfortunate long boring intro when doing it more than once…).
Take the time to learn the fight. Playing it with others will make it a lot easier even though it scales up a bit.
I had a fair amount of Knight’s stuff, though I guess doing this on my ranger was probably the cause of it. Build was just a kitten hybrid between damage & defense with whatever traits the new trait system allowed this new character to get.
I’ve completed it, though I had to emerge completely naked as victor, seeing as all my armor was broken.
Edit: I picked up on its patterns quickly – the adds were what just got me down almost instantly.
I was just wondering if every class had as many problems with this as my ranger did – or if it’s advised to do this with a party rather than alone.

I didn’t find it too hard. But I went with a Sodier gear elementalist, scepter and focus. It’s really hard killing that.

Rangers don’t have a lot of condition removal and almost all of those guys use poison. If you have a lot of toughness, that doesn’t help against poison at all. Only vitality would. Your best bet is still to kill things fast in there.
My ranger used greatword and shortbow in there, jumping in when I could get a bunch of vines at once.
When the Modrem thrasher or leecher spawns, you need to get that down as fast as possible.
With the wolves you have to make sure you’re always facing them. They once shot you. If you see a wolf prioritize it and face it until it’s dead.
There’s a corridor where some attacks won’t hit you as much, a longer arm off the main strip. It’s a good place to retreat to avoid taking on more than you can handle at once.
Alright, thanks for the feedback guys, I will keep this in mind if I choose to replay it for the cheevos.

I did it on my Ranger. Jumping a lot avoids that floor AoE. I think that’s the right instance I’m thinking of. I use Axe/Torch, and no real build…lol. I always have that constant Condition removal utility on and the constant healing skill, too.
So, I don’t think it’s because you used a Ranger. I find the Ranger great for staying alive when others seem to go down….or, at least, they are easy to get back up with their great downed skills.
We resurrect where we died and don’t even lose progress on the fight. That’s easier than the easy mode of any other games.
ohhhhhhhhh i did not know it was an 80 quest. haha sorry! did not finish it yet myself hahah sorry
Fight smarter, not harder. The dragon has to stick his head/limbs in between the branches to attack, and there are some parts of the chamber where he can’t actually reach. If you position yourself there and just attack from range, you’re basically at no risk from the dragon itself apart from his chamber-wide stomp.

Ranger’s have heaps of condition removal…EB, SoR, HS, SoTF, Brown Bear…

I guess I got used to my guardian, which removes conditions every time I shout.
Equip longbow.

Range everything with the occasional side-step of the tentacle range attacks.
You’ll be fine, it will not take long, and you will have the enjoyment of completing it yourself. Also, check dulfy if you need the full guide.

My deaths went up from 18 to 57 before I could finish it.

I guess this explains it. With only 18 deaths you probably haven’t tried anything slightly challenging which would encourage you to learn to play your profession effectively.
Done with my ranger without any problems at all. In fact I thought it was more challenging. You should dodge all the AoE and move quite a lot to evade but there’s nothing difficult if your PC and internet work good
I did this on my necro. With one minion. (they don’t live very long anyway T_T.)
Aside from dodging off the tree, the encounter wasn’t bad.
I really enjoyed the fight and only ended up downed once. (another bad dodge. )
I found the adds really easy to deal with….I kept ranged though. a/d & staff
Did on full zerker thief, on the first attempt, imho it s not an easy fight but with the will to overcome it and some attention to the animation you should get throught it.
I love this kind of fight and i hope anet will provide us with more
I dodged pretty much whenever I could.
This is why you die. Time dodges better. Nothing in there needs a double dodge.

Get a decent build.
Finally, stand where jennah runs off to. Fairly safe up there, and use a ranged weapon. That dragon goes from phase to phase in like 3-4 hits with my scepter/focus guard..
Advocate of learning and being a useful party member.

Dude if you fail the first time try again I failed the first time had to restart the mission(broken gear) but the next time I was not even downed after I drank some water watched something funny I came back with fresh forces a way better strategy. Do you wanna know my strategy?
Did it in one try on my ele, maybe try mastering your class a bit more? Keep in mind not every atrack needs to be dodged; some things can be jumped, you can blind/reflect the vines if you have those, some of the attacks don’t do so much damage and can be tanked,… It helps if you’re ranged too.
My wife and I did it together.
Died about as much.
By the time we finished, I’d used 8 repair canisters, 4 revive orbs, and shot my deaths up by 60 or so.
It’s challenging, but it’s supposed to be.
I don’t raid, I barely fractal, and I suck beyond words at PvP and WvW.
But I try, and that’s what counts.
^Why did you need revive orbs?
Because, my wife didn’t die as much as I did. xD

I was thinking that.
And then noticed, he said “with his wife”.
So probably died while the other was still alive and popped a revive orb, not to be waiting/doing nothing.
edit: I type too slow :P

Buy some Orrian Truffle Stew or whatever it is called, that gives +energy refill rate.
Do not dodge the big ground AoE, jump it. You can time it right and jump rather than waste a dodge. Absolutely only dodge when you need to. Like if there’s no way you can run out of a circle in time, that’s when you dodge. Most of the time in that fight you can simply move out of the AoE and save your dodge for those really hairy situations.
I found this fight really came down to proper dodge use than anything.
Also, 18 deaths? I agree with what someone else said, it seems you haven’t quite allowed yourself to experience difficult content if you’ve only died 18 times. I assume you leveled up in low-level zones or EoTM? Not knocking it, one of my alts leveled up in EoTM exclusively, has 0 deaths and 23hrs played time on him and he’s level 80. Man I love that EoTM train lol.
I’m confident I would get wrecked in any real challenge with that character, though.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
A couple ways to make it as easy and painless as possible in the shadow dragon fight using a ranger…
Use longbow, the range will help you stay away from the vines to the point where you will very rarely take damage. As for the large one’s aoe attacks, you can easily walk out of the circles before they hit (they have a very long arc).
As soon as the mordrem wolf spawns, attack it with as much burst damage as possible and down it as quick as you can, it can really ruin your day if you don’t deal with it asap. Same goes for the thrasher to a lesser extend, longbow keeps you out of most of the danger if you max range it.
When the dragon is vulnerable, you can barrage, then rapid fire as soon as the channel is finished, with good damage this will bring it to the next stage.
And finally, if you have a lot of problems fighting the dragon in the middle of the room, there is a relatively safe point (in the northwest I believe) where you can avoid most of the dragons attacks. Still have to dodge or block the ground stomp though.
I’m not even sure if I dropped below 50% health the whole time, let alone died o_O
To answer the question in the title of the topic, no. I don’t recall anything challenging me.
I also ran this on Ranger. What people are saying above is really true – positioning is your best friend. Jump to avoid the ground stomp, trait for longbow (the extra range and reduced cool down help a lot) and bring a brown bear. Yes, I’m telling you to bearbow this situation because it works. The extra range will keep you out of aggro from at least one tendril so you can avoid their attacks, the bear can draw aggro and has great survivability, and can remove the poison if need be. Bring either a second bear or a ranged pet for the swap and be sure to swap before the pet runs out of health.
