Yeah, that’s not what’s happening. The main flow of item selling/buying in GW2 is the Trading Post. You have full access to the trading post almost immediately, even on brand new accounts.

I cannot buy items from the TP.

Then something very specially wrong is going on with your account because there’s no level restriction or time restriction on when you can use the TP. Even free to play accounts can use it (they just are limited in what they can buy/sell). What happens when you try to buy items from the TP?

Similarly, what happens when you try to mail gold (or an item) to someone? Because, as long as you meet the requirements (correct level to send items and have set up the SMS or app authenticator), you should be able to send both gold and items; you just have a cap on how much you can spend. As we’ve already said, that cap will go away as you play and as your account gets older.

There is the 3 or 4 day verification thing.

Yeah, but I thought the 3-4 day thing was for Gem Store purchases or buying gems via the gem store only. I didn’t think it applied to the Trading Post, unless you’re on a free account.

OP, I 100% agree, you buy the game you should be unlocked right then and there. The fact that people will argue with you about it is insulting especially since like me, most of them probably never experienced such a lockout because when we started one didn’t exist. (though the TP didn’t exist for nearly a month after launch, so there was no way to sell kitten).

I’m arguing because it’s not as essential as you and the OP have convinced yourself it is… and I’ve been playing MMOs for 15ish years, so I think I can say I have gone through it all.

Maybe new characters should be given a silver platter as part of their starter equipment that’s worth 5g to a vendor? /sarcasm

You’re comparing being locked out of a feature you PAYED for and being given free items in game. The fact is that there is no reasonable reason to not allow a paid account instant access.

Just to give my own experience here:

I have three accounts. One was made at launch, one was made last year, and then I made a free account a few months ago to test out “free to play”. I’ve experienced the at least some of the new paid account restrictions (not all because some of the mail restrictions and such were applied after I bought my second account), and I’ve experienced all of the free account ones. They’re really nothing bad, and as long as you actually play the game, you’ll quickly get past the cautionary restrictions for the new paid accounts.

Edit: It’s already been stated many times that there is a good reason why these temporary restrictions are in place.

You didn’t pay for a feature. You payed for a license to play the game they created with every restriction they deem necessary within that license. This is why they can ban you for breaking the terms of service, despite you “paying” for it.

Let me repeat that: You don’t own the game. You own a license to play the game. They set the terms of that license. It’s your responsibility to read up on a game before you jump feet-first into it.

Welcome to the new age of gaming, ‘cause that’s how it works now: the “feature you payed for” included the restrictions that came with it.

This account had the gold transfer/email restrictions.

It really wasn’t that big a deal. Unless the new account is buying gems to convert to gold, new accounts don’t have gold to be sending off to others. At most they have a few silver.

This is a tempest in a teapot.

At the end of the day, the OP believes what the OP believes and doesn’t have to be convinced by anything anyone else posts on the topic.

However, even if the OP were to be correct and ANet were found to be grossly mistaken about what reduces gold selling, nothing is going to change in the next few weeks — the OP would still have to live with the current set of restrictions.

That leaves the OP two choices:

  • Accept the inconvenience and enjoy the rest of the game’s features.
  • Don’t accept the inconvenience and play something else.

If the OP can’t buy in-game items for his wife and kids.. maybe he could just give them the money in real life and they could make their own purchases?

Otherwise it just sounds like someone is trying to garner some sympathy for the gold sellers out there.

I wish willful fraud was a non-issue or even a small percentage.

Gold Sellers get their gold from two sources mainly. Hacked Accounts… and bank fraud. We’d love to not have to trouble ourselves with this. We could spend money and manpower elsewhere in the customer service team. Sadly, that is not the case.
