The stacking phenomenon is one I do feel reduces the RPG experience into a “this is the most efficient way to do it, so do it” kind of feeling.

Stacking, while it works, for some is a mental splinter, shredding immersion by reminding us that multiple characters can occupy the same space in the game.

Personally, (and this is just my opinion) favor collision detection, as it adds realism, which increases rpg immersion. Additionally, it provides the ability for the players to make true “walls” of heavy wearing classes to protect squishies in engagements.

The proper way to incorporate collision detection so as to avoid player greifing, would be to make it so that friendly units respond to other friendlies as if they were 50% size, allowing for more wiggle room for friendlies.

However, collision detection will never be seen in GW2, even if the players cried to the heavens for it. I say this because I assume [based on no knowledge whatsoever] that it would be very difficult to code into the existing game correctly, and / or the sudden change in fundamental mechanisms of the game would cause a huge wave in polarity of opinion to occur where people would either be for it 100% or proclaim that it completely ruins the game. The risk of that alone will cause collision to not be added into gw2. Collision Detection being, in my mind, the only “solution” to the “problem” of stacking.

(Personally I myself don’t see it as a “problem” but I do empathize with people when they express their distaste for it from an immersion and / lameness standpoint)

If you don’t enjoy stacking, then don’t stack?

Try that in a pug in any dungeon. See what happens. Go do AC at the spider queen. Go do the weapon test fractal. Actually play the game to know what people are talking about.

We know what you’re talking about. Most of us stack everywhere. We just don’t throw a hissifit because we don’t like something. We’re not trying to impede our way of playing the game on others by saying ‘non-stacking should go!’.

It almost exclusively has upsides, which is why it’s so predominant.

  • Easily ball up groups, which increases cleave damage
  • Due to close range to all party members, boon sharing becomes a lot easier
  • Rezzing downed characters is easier too, because everyone is on top of each other
  • Everyone can take melee weapons, which is also higher DPS
  • Creates opportunity for high-DPS attacks like Whirlwind attack and Fiery Rush to use their full potential when stacking against a wall
  • Dodging into a wall will not decrease your DPS by much, because you can immediately re-engage after your dodge

The only downside really is that your entire party becomes vulnerable to cleave DPS and AoE attacks.

So, in conclusion: if you don’t like stacking don’t stack. If you feel pressured by groups to stack, simply create your own groups that say “no stacking” in your LFG.

Now go, and have fun on your 3 hour dungeon runs. I’ll be here, enjoying my 10 minutes runs.

Create your own group and state you don’t want to stack. The people saying lol yeah here would join you.

It does not work. Games are about overcoming challenges, and stacking overcomes challenges. For the same reason no one is going to play without any traits because they want content to be more challenging, they are going to stack even if they don’t like stacking. Threads like these are not about pressuring players out of strategies that work, but about reaching to the devs, because it is their design and the blame lies solely with them. Stacking is stupid and boring and it’s a shame that it’s so effective.

If it took you 3 hours to do something without stacking, that legitimately sounds like a learn to play issue.

Maybe I can help your 5 signet warrior streamline?

There are more than 5 people in the forum that is against stacking. Sure you can form your own group in-game…

If you see someone support this, their usernames are on the right side, add them, form a schedule, form a group.

If there’s a will, there’s a way.

Lol, you’re too cute. I hope you read my second sentence that said I do most dungeon paths in around 10 minutes? I don’t need build advice, but thanks for the proposal.

Play the game? You mean, form a guild by finding players who prefer a non-stack playstyle? You mean use the LFG to form a group that wants to not stack? That kind of “play the game?”

If you mean play the game to understand why people stack, I already know that. Yes, not stacking is less efficient. Since the option exists not to stack, people complaining about stacking are really saying, “I want not to stack, but I still want efficiency.”

Let’s (for the sake of discussion), say that ANet greatly expands the radius on boons. Let’s also assume that ranged damage gets put on a par with melee. These changes would allow players to “not stack” and still be efficient. But, what happens then? Wouldn’t they be removing one of the few limitations that actually require the use of teamwork and coordination? Wouldn’t ANet have to invent some other reason to coordinate more? Wouldn’t they have to adjust dungeon challenge to compensate for increased player efficiency across the board?

I’m not saying ANet shouldn’t do any of those things, but they’d have to come as a package in which PvE play in its entirety would be adjusted. As much as that might be desirable, I don’t see it happening anytime soon.
