Long Leveling Curve: Wrong Impression
This game does not have a long leveling curve.
This game does not have a long leveling curve.
Seeing as how getting to 80 is 95% of the game, it is pretty long.
You can do 20 levels just sitting in a city and crafting. “Getting to 80” is an indirect result of exploring, anyway. There is no real reason to rush to 80 in this game.
There is no real reason to rush to 90 in WoW, either. But people still do.
So, I’m thinking that the long leveling curve is what is accountable for all of the complaints, ascended gear, etc.
In Factions and Nightfall, the leveling curve consisted of about 15-20% of the game at most. It wasn’t much more than a tutorial. The actual game was the other 80%. People didn’t whine and expect “endgame” after they hit 20 because 80% of the game was level 20 content.
In Guild Wars 2, the leveling curve is something like 95% of the game. By the time you hit 80, you have one zone left. This seems to equate to people rush to level 80, then complain that there is nothing to do…after all, there is only 5% of the game geared for level 80s.
If you hit max level in your starting zone, the zones that are typically 1 to 15, do you believe there would still be complaints of “no endgame”, as the people who rushed to level 15 would still have 80-90% of the game to look forward to?
Hi. I’m level 80. I have 50% world completion.
Not only do I have more than 1 zone left, I have literally half of the game world. Not only that, but that doesn’t include dungeons, the new island, fractals, or sPvP.
Thanks for not speaking for me again!

Ah, so you can go do low level content.
Most who complain about no endgame don’t consider low level content to be content.
Thanks for not speaking for me again!
You were complaining about lack of endgame? Shame on you.
@bluebird
you are speaking for me.
except i only have 36% map complete.
great game taken into moderation! and thats relative as i play probably 15-20h a week!!!
i mean, just doing all the 60 to 80 zones at my pace (i look around and talk to npcs, and do a dungeon here and there) is another 50h…!
Thing is once you hit 80 you can still play anywhere in the game ! I dont know why so many people feel they should / can only play in level 80 zones once they get to level 80! especially since so many people believe in horizontal progression !
This truely puzzles me greatly!
How can people be so focused on attacking any content thats reward oriented but in turn they refuse to play anything that isnt reward oriented!

There was one level 80 zone.
It gives the impression that everything is a precursor to that level 80 zone.

Didn’t really understand the whole leveling thing for this game, myself. With such a commitment to the game being as accessible as possible why does my character have to reach a certain level before entering some of the zones?
Explain to me how “getting to 80” is “95% of the game.”
There was one level 80 zone.
So what? The way this game is designed 80 is really just a number.
a newly 80 will find challenge in lvl 60+ zones.
a newly 80 isnt fully geared.
i know i am not. and i wont “grind” dungeons to be.
ill continue what i was doing, some explo, some dungeon…
the game basically unfolds itself at a nice pace if you dont take it as a “must grind to get best gear asap”. problem (or not) is that the game allows such practice and 95% of people who complain about the game are grinders.
With the downscaling mechanic all zones are level 80 (although they do get easier as you get higher). Can still get your kitten handed to you in the lower zones if you get kitteny.
300 hours and 57% map completion. There are zones I haven’t even set foot in yet and I’ve been 80 for probably 150 hours!

Hence, why it says wrong impression in the title and not correct impression.
The level range spanning across the entire game could easily give someone the impression that 90%+ of the game is just a precursor for the level 80 zone(s).
This wrong impression is also somewhat encouraged by lower level zones giving scaled down rewards compared to higher level zones.
I’m getting high-level drops in lower areas. Not as often as the high-level areas, but I’m still getting them.

In reality, it should give the opposite impression.

Low level content is content, and thus your (and their) arguments are invalid.

Same. I’ve got over 400 hours of playtime in the game, and I don’t have 100% world completion.

Isn’t the average /age for reaching 80 about 100 hrs?
Another NCSoft game I played took 2500-3k hours to max level.

i wonder what % of the active players and what amount of time played on the “total of time played by all players in gw2” is accouted by elitist and game junkies who have 100% map completion.
i actually so see yellow stars here and there; and to me it is astounding. but it isnt uncommon!
and are these players, a necessity for the game future ? what would happen to gw2 right now if all the yellow star and legendary weilding players quit ?
thats for the game designers to understand and cope with
personnaly, im at 180h played and i feel as im not keeping up with the big majority of players. intense.
I got to lvl 80 the first time with natural progression through the story ie: I played my story mission when i was close to the recomended level and otherwise stuck around the green marker gaining the extra levels needed playing in the zones the story took me to.
I didn’t do a lot of exploring outside of where I was prodded to go. I ended up lvl 80 at fort trinity with 36% map completion. I still had tons to do.

more like 150h if you are not rushing from quest to quest.
anyway, 80 doesnt change much..
lvl 60 zones are still relatively challenging for a newly 80!

I’m not sure how there is this much failure to communicate. Why are people trying to “correct” me by telling me there’s more to do after you hit 80? At no point have I stated that there is nothing to do at 80, and in fact, I’ve actually said exactly the opposite.
I’m saying that the level range present in the game does a disservice at relaying the “Endgame Re-imagined” premise.

If anything, the leveling in this game is too fast because I wasn’t close to half done with the lower level zones and I was already to 80.

I do understand where your failure to communicate comes from. Perhaps it was poor wording on my part, but your confusion comes from thinking that by leveling curve I mean time it takes to level.
Downscaling doesn’t make all zones 80 and endgame. It makes them “practically 80 and endgame”, but the leveling curve is stretched between the starter areas and Cursed Shore regardless. I’ve been thinking on the subject but what good can that do now? None, it’s way too late. This game could have easily set the maximum level somewhere around the time players finish Kessex Hills for example. So 25. And all the currently 25+ zones would be level 25 zones. It would have made a big psychological difference and would have been so much more elegant.

Completely agree, and that is what I attempted to convey in the OP, but apparently failed pretty hard at it.
There’s nothing they can do now…HOWEVER, they can not increase the level cap in expansions. Still perhaps too late, but could mitigate the damage.

MY failure to communicate?
Oh, the irony in this thread.

Sure.
And then I spend the entire OP, and 2-3 following posts explaining what I meant by it.
I did say long leveling curve, not high leveling curve. High leveling curve means it takes a long time to level. In this case, a long leveling curve means that the leveling curve continues through almost the entirety of the game. In GW, the leveling curve stopped at about 15% of the way through the content. In GW2, the leveling curve extends through 90% of the content.
I’m open to other descriptions of it that would fit into the topic title limit of 45 characters. I guess I could have just left off Long and addressed the existence of a leveling curve at all.
