Hi All,

This has most likely been asked many times – I have read through many threads but still unable to find all answers I need.

I am not very good at this game as much as I love it. GW1 I was able to spec up my heroes to protect myself but I don’t have that luxury here.

I am looking for a fun character to play. I find myself dying too often, more so in HoT – But even with Rev. I just cannot solo and find it hard to find a team to run round basic stuff like Hero Points or Mastery Points.

I want a class that has good protection, but also a bit of power, Sure I may not be able to run around in full zerk gear but I also dont want to run around in a bubble and take 30 minutes to kill a rabbit >_<

Also if I do gain more confidence in playing and I want to go fractals or raids, one of these classes that would also be good for that when adapted.

Thanks if you can provide any help.

I would say ele is on the harder side for hots.

I find the lack of CC partially killer because of break bars.

If you want pve easy mode. I would suggest guardian. You can easily go full zerk easily.

For ordinary PvE, I love my Necromancer. She is nearly indestructible. They have a large health pool. Minions to distract/soak up damage. A second health bar with Shroud. Even with full Zerk gear it is very hard to die as a Necromancer.

I love necro for pretty much any pve content. As far as survivability goes, I think necro (particularly reaper) is great. You also do good damage and, as long as you use your dodges and such, can solo most anything in open pve.

For open world, ranger/druid is the easiest.
It has a variety of weapons at your disposal. Very good mobility and a pet that helps you do damage and soak up damage.

My hubby plays guardian/dragonhunter and has no problems whatsoever ….

If your looking for a light class I suggest Necro with the following link for a build I put this on my Necro and she is a powerhouse. Have had no problems in HOT or any open world content at all including the new maps and zones. I will be taking her into pvp soon :

I play most classes, except revenant and engineer, I do have both a revenant(herald) and an engineer (scrapper)

I’ll be honest, I die regularly as well, especially in open world running with my dungeon/raid sets and being ganged tends to be fatal. I can save myself 9 out of 10 times, but I tend to fall back on my WvW characters if I really want to be indestructible

I do however play most classes: so I’ll provide some tips:

1 condi cleanses/ stunbreakers can be usefull
2 Having toughness is no problem when roaming PvE land especially not when alone.
3 Defensive builds tend to help a lot in staying alive.
4 ranging can help a lot
5 pet’s /clones/ minions /elementals/ summoning suff (pet whistle or fire elemental powder) can be very usefull.
6 if you have acces to stealth use it if you find stuff hard to run through.
7 swiftness helps moving around. It can also get you OOC in case you get tagged.
8 Having heavy armor is nice, but you can often make very potent builds using different trinkets (swapping 2 berserker trinkets for knights trinkets can go a long way to staying alive.)
9 condi builds tend to allow a bit of distance well in all cases except revenant.
10 Use your heals and your dodges, but do not waste them,
11 Use food when running power builds dungeon utility potionssometimes are very potent. (Undead slaying in Orr), but also in fractals these utility potions are nice, not only for the +10% dmg but also for the -10% dmg
12 There is plenty of dmg reducing food

BUT:
In dungeon and fractals (not to mention raids) make sure you run (GLASS) meta, you might draw aggro if you do not abide by this simple rule. Especiall in EXP or speed groups

As for classes
I prefer:
- Necro, warrior, guardian and ranger as they seem the most most tanky classes even on zerk armor
but:
- PU mesmer and thieves (engineer) have acces to stealth they can get to things relativelly unseen on the other hand they tend to be squishy classes
- Elementalist with a fire/water/tempest (more dmg oriented) or water/arcane/tempest (heal oriented) trait line can be extremely durable, even though they can be really squishy.

Remember there are other sets of armor the berserker and viper’s….

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

Longbow druid/ranger is inarguably the easiest solo PvE build. Any type of necro is 2nd.

The other professions are miles behind in terms of Cadillac-driving PvE easy comfort, but next would be guardian/warrior.

For open world PvE, absolutely ranger. I can literally sustain meta-event legendary boss spawns solo on mine.

That said, it won’t really make you a better player if you don’t try to advance more.

I recommend necromancer. Maybe something like this for awesome survivability in purely offensive gear:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vRAQNArYWnMbCV2gtbCebC0bilgBLKBEAKXTRtdw6KeIuEjiA-TRSFQBlTfAAeAAjUJY9U/JF7P0QlfL4QAUgTAQCOCAkC4RpRA-e

I used cheap runes/sigils but they work out pretty well. With blood magic and parasitic contagion GM trait from the curses line you will constantly heal in combat. Take a damage spike? Hop into reaper shroud and quickly heal from all the condi you’re throwing around. Use “Rise!” to reduce damage taken and distract enemies. Your heal also replenishes up to 20% life force.

You could also do different utilities. I know a lot of necro players like to go heavy on minions while this build only utilizes “Rise!”. With more minions the pressure is taken off of you somewhat. But honestly, with blood magic and parasitic contagion you should be outhealing many enemies, so just wade right in!

I’d say ranger for the pet, necro for the minions or mesmer for the clones. I find for the hero points in HoT mesmer and ranger with a tanky pet seems to work great for me to solo them. Can run them all full zerk too and not really have any issues. I do find my ranger handles the raptor pack better when trying to run through them then my mesmer. And the necro is easy to run past them too since you have shroud for more HP.

I play on a satellite Internet connection, and regularly have 2,500 ping and I gotta say MM Necromancer is the way to go.

I run all viper armor/weapons and rarely find anything that will just one shot me (unlike my engineer or Ranger) and I am able to solo almost anything.

Just let me know when the PVE/PVP skill separation happens.

Can Engi please have more than one viable skill set in PVE? Turrets maybe?

tl;dr— Guard, Necro, or Engi, ranked in that order.

I think if it’s easy-mode PvE you’re going for, a dragonhunter guard build is your best bet. Meditrapper is what I use for the most part, and it really is an incredibly simple and fun build in just about all corners of the game. Even with full zerker gear, you’ve got tons of CC you can utilize in case you start finding yourself overwhelmed, not to mention a solid invuln (F3) that you can use as a panic button. That said, they are a bit slower, so you may consider sacrificing zerker runes for either runes of speed or runes of the traveler for the permanent 25% boost. I use runes of speed in PvE, though I have different builds for WvW and PvP.

While Engi is certainly great for PvE but it does require the player be a bit more attentive to what’s happening in combat than a DH or necro, or you might find yourself in a quick downstate. Engi does have its own fair share of panic buttons too, though, so you might give it a try if you like a class that forces you to engage a bit more with the game. I should note that engineers also have some really fun tools in their belt (pun intended? probably).. what other classes let you play with a flamethrower and grenades?

Necro is more of a middle ground between these two, I’d say. With their incredibly deep health pool, you can take a real beating and walk away from most fights unscathed. You’ll have more versatility across different builds than a guard might, but again, you’ll need to pay closer attention to what’s going on and what skills you’re using.

I’d be inclined to suggest a MM necro/reaper, plus check on Dulfy for the easier HP you can solo in HoT. Map shout for the trickier ones - but know a necro can likely take those, too. I used a build from someone off the forums (forgive me, but I don’t remember who it was!):

I had a lot of fun with that one.

Warrior:
-Great passive defenses, high armor, high health, very high health regeneration/second and can still dish out tons of damage at the same time.
-While it is mostly melee combat, Its skills and traits and again large passive defenses makes them very tough to beat even in extremely dangerous situations.

Necromancer:
-High base health pool + about 13 000 death shroud “health”.
-Minions and lots of life steal that take agro from mobs, increases your toughness and remove conditions from you
-While you dont have usually high health regeneration you can have high death shroud regeneration and if you take that into consideration then wow youre tough

Engineers:
-Not a profession for everyone, thematically its very different from other magic/bow/sword professinos
-has lots of skills and passive defenses to keep you tough and up and running

Rangers:
-While the them selves arent super tough as above mentioned professions they do have many mechanics that will keep them alive such as…
-Ranged skills. Rangers have the longest range (1500 with longbow, while others have 1200 on rifles, staves ect). Its simple really, kill it before it even comes to you
-Traps and cc. If it does come to you knock it back, knock it up, stun it and daze it or even go stealth
-Pets, no matter what people tell you and how people take them pets are great at holding agro. A lot of people look as pets as strictly as a dps boost, but you have a lot of controll over your pet and the types of pets you can charm. Ive been able to solo many kinds of champions just because i had a tanky pair of pets. When it comes to stats, you pretty much have 2 health pools of 40 000 health that you can switch and refresh endlessly that takes all the beatings from the hard hitting mobs.

As a general tip regarding any class that i always give out when people ask me about professions are stats. You need to understand that all professions have the exact same stats at lvl 80 (besides the base health pool and armor level).
Knowing that it is possible to mix and match armor/rune/trinkets/weapons/traits/skills to get certain stats at certain “sweet spots” for any kind of player without sacrificing much of the dps at all.

I often play full zerker armor + power/precision runes (runes of the pack is nice) and full soldiers trinkets. I use weapon sigils, traits and skills to boost certain stats even further such as might for more power, fury for additional 20% crit chance, quickness ect.

If you’re looking for something that dies not very often ranger is the class for you, a close second imho is necro, but as for ranger i can afk anywhere in central tyria to use the restroom and find that my pet has solo’d all the aggro and even done half the heart. So that pet is bad kitten . When i need to afk on my other classes i miss my pet.

If you are not that good by now. Raids and fractals my not be for you.

For general PVE, a ranger with a pet is the way to go if you are not ( and like me ) a good button pusher. A pet will tank and kill, while you stay out of harms way.

Try it, you will like it. You will never be superior, but you will stay alive.

ya cant go wrong with a good ‘ol Bunker Guardian. I rarely die with this char. Lots of healing, very high Armor Rating, and does decent damage with staff and sword/shield. I use Knight’s Armor and Superior Rune of the Traveler.

I would recommend Ranger, and Necromancer with minions.
For melee, Guardian can be more survivable (tradeoff being doing less dmg).

“Try mesmer, can easily solo so many champs.”
The mesmer’s strength is (stronger) fewer targets.
Its weakness is more (weaker) targets.

Guardian, Warrior, Ranger, Necromancer.

No particular order, more about play-style and preference.

If you have trouble with the dodging and using skills to survive etc, then Ranger+Necro on the top. Warrior+Guardian have lots of passive defenses but still require some active playing to work.

Example, I think I soloed half the champions in Open World Tyria with Ranger at launch simply because of how hard to kill that pet can get. Had a harder time with Guardian initially, but as I’ve played more guardian, nowadays I can solo more champions on the Guardian as I’ve learned him better.

As for stats, I generally recommend getting berserk armor + weapons. And then start with tanky trinkets, and slowly shift them around as you like. Many people have a few sets of different Ascended amulets/rings by now, so often have some spare ones to swap around.

Another tip for some classes, is to have 1 weapon set for damage and the other for tanking. Example guardian could have a Berserker Greatsword for damage, and a Clerics Staff for healing and bit more toughness. This lets you change some stats while in combat with the weapon swap.
