Looking for some advice.
Pretty hard to give good advice via forum so throw me a whisper when you’re ingame
First thing you should do is get exotic armor and at least rare trinkets. You will want to do guild missions weekly to get ascended accessories. You might want to work on some fractals to get as ascended rings. Get the ascended neck from laurels. Choosing a build can be hard. I would suggest anything you get ascended I would make berserker. But starting out you will want some gear that has toughness in it as well as gear with power precision and ferocity. You can also work on farming mastery in HoT playing in hose zones can also help you out in learning your class better.
You should also check out some theif builds and how to use them with optimal rotations. Or if things are feeling overwhelming just level another character. You will want to eventually craft ascended if you are into things like raids or simply like having the best gear. So after getting exotic armor I would suggest crafting something to 500 so you can start making the time gated mats. Ascended is partially so expensive because some of the components you can only craft once per day so some people buy those components off the trading post instead of waiting to craft over like a month or so. But that makes it a bit more expensive. Pvp can also be fun. I will just let you know theif/daredevil isn’t so great in PvE right now for things like raids. That could easily change for new wings being added but the current wings don’t really need that class. So if you craft ascended armor/weapons make sure you really really like theif or maybe another medium armor profession.
Personally I would work on running some quick dungeons like CoF p1 to get tokens for exotic gear and level another character at the same time. While also doing guild missions weekly of course.
Thanks Andraus, awesome advice.
My thief just hit 80 a few days ago too. I crafted her a full exotic set of berserker armor and added Scholar Runes or whatever to them. I’m doing about 1000% more damage than I did leveling up now and I die if you sneeze in my general direction! The jump from dagger/dagger to staff/daredevil was pretty huge and fun. I was much more able to handle multiple targets at a time, but switching from random gear to berserker just hurts too much right now. I do think it’s one of the more fun classes to play so far though.
When I hit 80 with my thief, I decided to become a leatherworker crafter to make me a set of Rune of the Trapper. It really changed things up in how I play.
Even after reaching level 80 I still feel like a beginner in this magnificent world
To be honest, as a fresh 80 you still are a beginner . There’s a huge world still waiting for you to explore.
Personally, I go with rare lvl 80 equipment for new characters until I have figured out what build/stat set I really want to use with them. For open world, low-level dungeons, or even low-level fractals, rares (yellow) are a decent starting point as long as you don’t have abundant resources (which will come by itself if you keep playing).
Have you played all the way through your personal story yet? The later chapters can be a good source for some lvl 80 equipment pieces, too. The final instance inside the ruined city or Arah actually rewards you with an exotic level helmet (with berserker/full direct damage stats).
Try to see more of the world. There is no need to do 100% map exploration right now, but just opening up all the maps (and preferably a variety of waypoints on each) and checking out the different events you come across will broaden your knowledge of the game and what your character’s able/how to use your skills and traits. There are a lot of event chains all over the world that are both entertaining, give you insights into the story and lore of this game world, and allow you to amass resources and currency towards whatever equipment you are ultimately going for.
Don’t forget to harvest whatever resources you come across, either to put them towards leveling crafters of your own, or selling them at the trading post. Low-level common resources like ore or wood are decently valuable in this game.
Of course there’s dungeons and fractals for 5-man instanced content. Starting out, you will find them a step up from the casual open world, as they generally force you into dodging, using your full trait and utility setup, and paying attention to the encounter mechanics where most open-world encounters can be auto-attacked to death. They are a lot of fun though if you enjoy that kind of content, and a good source for currency for further equipment (exotic armor and weapons via dungeon tokens, and ascended rings via fractal relics).
Around the Orr maps, you will also find temples to the human gods. Whenever these temples are controlled by the pact (there’s event chains around each of these temples) they are another source of exotic armor and trinkets, this time traded for karma.
If you have access to the Heart of Thorns expansion, you may want to play the introductory instance of the expansion now, since it unlocks your masteries that your experience will now flow into. The HoT maps themselves are a step up in difficulty, both in navigation (due to being mostly multi-layered) as well as in mob and event encounters. Dive in if you feel like it, but don’t hesitate to go back to core Tyria first if you feel your grasp of the game and its combat system isn’t quite up to the challenge yet.
And of course, there’s always alternate characters. This game is awesome in that most stuff you do/gain in-game is account bound, and it’s really up to you what character to take into what content. No need to take a thief to gain dungeon tokens for their armor if you’d much rather take the ele that doesn’t need those tokens, since both can profit from them.
Most of all: Have fun! And if you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
Hello, welcome to Tyria fist of all. My advice would be to set yourself short term, mid term and long term goals i.e.
Long term: Craft a legendary weapon (the dagger, Incinerator, is really cool)
Mid Term: Explore all Tyria for the gift of exploration (required for legendary crafting)
Short term: Explore all Shiverpeak maps this week.
You don’t like Legendary weapons/don’t care?
Long term: Acquire the Dungeoneer title (buy every item from the dungeon seller)
Mid term: Acquire the Dungeon Master title (finish all the dungeons available)
Short term: Finish the all paths from the Arah dungeon the next two days.
Other suggestions:
- Ascended Armor/weapon set
- PvP rank
- Get glorious armor set (PvP)
- Go for a specific look on your character
- Finish you personal story
- Unlock all your specialization traits
- Complete all HoT maps
- Join a Raid and successfully finish it
- Unlock and complete a specific Collection (recommended: Trash Collector that gets you the Honorary Skritt title)
- Would suggest til WvW is fixed before you go there and set a goal
You can make more than one at a time, so you don’t get bored. People say we don’ have end game but truth is we have a lot of options, I must have missed more than a few.
As a fresh 80, the overall plan is to lay a solid foundation that can help you along with the rest of your journeys.
So, starting from some of the most important ones:
-Full exotic gear. This might only be worth your while after discovering which build you like. If you’re struggling with staying alive, it’s still ok to use offensive stats on most of your equipment, but use something more defensive for your trinkets. If you can’t afford exotic just quite yet, start off with some rare gear and work your way up.
-100% world completion. This is the primary mid-to-long term goal I always recommend to start off with. Not only do you get to explore a beautiful world, it will help you to hone your skill, learn your build and understand some lore. Having waypoints across the world will make it so much easier for you to quickly get to guild mission locations, world bosses, vendors and locations for achievements. Gathering whilst exploring will land you with a tidy amount of materials under your belt, which can be sold for some sweet gold. The 100% will also land you well on your way to being able to unlock your elite specialisation, if you have HoT.
-Personal Story. Admittedly, story isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but I’d recommend doing it on your main character. I have found it enjoyable many a time, the exp rewards aren’t bad and I like to think it gives some good direction regarding map exploration.
OK, so you’ve done that… what next? These are a little more optional and really depends on what you like in GW2:
-Living Story Season 2. Unfortunately LS1 isn’t replayable (at least, for now), but if you liked the personal story, I’d certainly recommend this. It also will tie you into HoT story and the current events in Tyria.
-HoT, masteries and elite specs. I’d only recommend doing the majority of this after you’ve experienced the majority of what the core game has to offer.
-Achievement Hunting. Take a look at your Achievement Panel and have a browse. Use it as a way to direct your game-play and to discover new things.
-Thinking about fractals, raids or just generally having BiS gear? Log-in every day and save up your laurels. Consider levelling a crafting class suitable for your character. Start early- saving up enough for ascended gear will take a while!
-Start working on your aesthetic and wardrobe- people don’t call it “Fashion Wars 2” for nothing
-Start another character. Experience a different race and their story. Try a new profession, explore different ways of playing.
-Joining a guild (if you haven’t already) might be helpful- guildies are a great way to learn more about the game or get a foot-in-the-door to group content.
I’ll add more if I think of anything!
