So my guild is currently looking for a new home as our server rapidly depopulates for greener fields. We’ve stuck it out as long as we can manage, but it is impairing our ability to do content effectively with no population around to assist in events or making WvW remotely doable. So, we’ve begun to scout. The following is all we are looking for:

PVE:
A pve population where people are available for dungeons and large events
populated maps

PVP:
A server with actual warm bodies to at least -try- to put up a fight in wvw. We aren’t looking for a server that dominates their opponents totally, but we DO want to participate in wvw where we stand a chance and are not being spawncamped for the entire week for there being no more than 20 people per map.

Mostly, we’re looking at population. And while it is easy to see what servers are full/high, what we cannot see is which of these servers have a nice distribution between pvp and pve so our options for content are not so regrettably limited.

So I’m looking for suggestions, and additional information about prospective servers! Thanks!

I would love to help you on this, but because of ANET’s genious, free transfers have pretty much destroyed all server populations. So your only real option at the moment is one of the HEAVY servers, which are by no means heavy in population or wvw, or balance of any kind for that matter. Your best bet is to pray that one of the full servers drop to heavy for a split second long enough to get onto that server. I have friends stuck on JQ, HoD, Blackgate, and several others. Our guild was decimated before we where even able to form, because we chose one of the servers that became the flavor of the month the same day. So now we have guildies leaving the game entirely over frustration. If you have any desire to win WvW at all, you are almost forced to wait on one of the FULL servers. I myself am leaving the game as soon as the new Rift xpac drops. I doubt ill be back. Good luck!

….. don’t move to a large, full, or heavy server. everyone else is doing the same thing. it’s ruining those servers.

SoR is full enough and has already had plenty of bandwagon transfers, now we have wonderfully long WvW queues, sure glad they all joined up.

Obnoxious as it sounds, have you tried coercing other people to transfer TO your server? It honestly would be much better in the long run, for you and for all other servers.

Anet dropped the ball on transfers. They should only have been allowed onto LOW pop servers. Not transferring to a full server because everyone left yours, but transferring to a low pop server because yours is too full. All they’ve accomplished by wide-open transfers is making MORE full servers and MORE empty servers.

Darkhaven sounds about right for you guys. We have a very large population.

PvE
We have a very large PvE community, seriously, it’s huge.

WvW
We only have queues for WvW during prime time and night time (we’re western server). We have a dominant night time presence, but we’re looking to improve our morning/day time presence. If your guild wants to come, no matter what time you play (except perhaps early in the morning) you’ll find that there is a respectable amount of Dh people playing at any given time. We have amazing commanders (seriously, the Half Naked Norn for example, has become famous beyond just our server), and an alliance of most Darkhaven WvW guilds that are constantly improving our organization.

So yeah, I’d recommend Darkhaven for you guys! If you have any questions feel free to ask.

i fear its all hush hush for now, as big pvp guilds etc dont want all the newbies/casuals flocking to their server and messing up their wvw

best best is , go into a heavy/full one if you want to pve , but if you want to pvp just watch the wvw scoreboard for a week and keep track of the good servers, migrate to the less full one and make a name for yourselves..but ive already said too much

Really? I had an insta-queue earlier. I looked for groups in WvW but no one wanted to zerg keeps with me, maybe because it was during off hours but still.

tbh, on rall right now… there’s no keeps to zerg, we own everything. and if the enemies do have a keep or a tower, half the population wants to let them keep it so maybe they’ll come back out to play.
its impossible at this point for us to not be in first place by the end of the matchup, so a lot of us aren’t queuing or playing these last few days out.. it’s just boring out there.

yesterday however, we had 3 hour queues for EB… 3 hours. that’s just not fun

The bandwagon transferring really needs to be dealt with, and by dealt with I mean it’s time for anet to address the server transferring issue. Anyone that pays attention to the WvW sees that it’s usually one big server having 200k while the other two are at 40k.

The first day you can see numbers pretty fairly spaced out sure but as the week rolls on people leave to join the winning server. I really hate to see the fate of WvW about who becomes just a fotw server.

Let me just clarify: once again we aren’t looking for a fotw server, I already know which ones those are and that is why I am asking for input on varying servers to get an idea of what things are like elsewhere. It is absolutely no fun at all to play on a dying server, nor do I expect people to come back (or that I can make them come back single-handedly).

We are a small group who just want to enjoy the content with a fair population for both the wvw and the pve aspects -without- looking toward instant wins for total domination (that’s no fun).

I’ve seen some good info here and there; I will definitely check out darkhaven to see what is happening there. I’ve also heard good things about Sea of Sorrows since it has a large oceanic population which would cater very well to our odd play hours.

In any case, I’m still looking for more information—but please don’t assume we intend to flock to an already overcrowded server based on wvw domination! That is definitely not what we’re looking for. We’re out for competition. Afterall, what is the point if you sweep the maps and have no one left to fight?

(Additionally: we are trying to find a good place to settle -before- Anet addresses these transfer issues so we don’t get locked onto a server that no one will pay to transfer to!)

Darkhaven is actually in fairly competitive matches. While in this current bracket we’re almost certainly going to win, there’s still good battles to be had. Not to mention, thanks to this win, we’ll be moving up a bracket!

Also, Darkhaven has a very large night time population. A lot of it is oceanic, but a lot of it is also night owls from NA. I’d say, we have the same population during the day as most servers, but a much higher night time population than most. Ask any of our opponents in WvW what they think, you’ll hear the same XD.

If you want to know more, consult this thread (feel free to mention I sent you): https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/Dark-Haven-Hiring-Capable-Guilds-9am-3pm-pst/first#post460408

I have been loving Maguuma. While perhaps smaller that some of the giants, the player base there is a good group. We really have to work together and organize our stuff to fight the sea of sorrow zerg, and it has led to some really great fights and good wvw.

As for PVE, I see dungeon groups forming even at the lowest playtimes and I imagine during NA primetime it’s quite hopping. Even if my play times would line up better on SoS being oceanic myself, the community is just such a good crew over at Mag’s. Seems to be a nice balance of NA, Europeans, and Oceanics. So that’s my suggestion.

Felix.3467, relax I wasn’t saying you and your playgroup were fairweather pvpers, in fact I wasn’t even aware that we’re having a discussion in this direction.

The point I was trying to make was simply servers get too many bandwagon players transferring and killing population of the losing server. Add to that the big name pvp guild/alliances seemingly moving around all the time to avoid people following them and messing up their queues. So that’s another problem with transfers, the real issue is Anet needs to make transfers cost something now, and incentivize sticking to a server.

I would say, any of those people who want to change to a different server, I say come to Yak’s Bend. We have a good night shift but the 9am – 3pm area seems to be one of our biggest weak points for WvW players. So I say come to Yak’s Bend, and stay here.
