Loose targeting since recent patch?

Anyone else feel that you’re losing target lock much more easily since the recent patch? It seems almost as if the target would drop at random sometimes while trying to perform a skill, action. I’m definitely not hitting ‘next target’ or left clicking on terrain (though I do that by accident sometimes).

I thought it was just me, but a number of my friends and guildmates have indicated they’re seeing an increase at target loss as well recently. This is really annoying in mobbed fights, especially when you try to pop a skill and find out that you’ve lost target lock and have to wait for the skill to cool down.

Maybe there’s another thread about this somewhere, but my search didn’t come up with anything.

I have autotargeting disabled and promote skill target enabled; been set this way since I first started playing.

Yes! I was thinking that last night. It felt like it used to back before they implemented the ability to toggle ‘select target with right-click.’ I am always using the right mouse button to move and I used to lose target a lot while strafing. And now I seem to be again. It was actually making me question whether or not I had imagined that the situation had improved after that previous change.

Main thread for this issue:
Mouse losing focus -right click to turn not working [Merged]
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Mouse-losing-focus-right-click-to-turn-not-working-Merged

Hi. All of these are related to the same issue.

Issue: Mouse Button Loses Focus and Does Not Reacquire It

  • Most of the time that this issue is present (it is inconsistent), the mouse actually loses focus and never reacquires it, which prevents character and camera orientation with the right mouse button and leaves the game in a completely unplayable state. Some days it is very bad and prevents you from even being able to play, other times it is only a couple times a minutes, but leads to frustration and not playing the game the rest of that day.

Issue: Nearby Friendly Target Being Selected Unintentionally Due To Mouse Button Losing Focus and Reacquiring It Quickly

  • The recently added option to ‘Disable Right-click Targeting’ has helped with the linked issue of randomly selecting a nearby friendly target while moving your camera with the right mouse button. This happens because the mouse tracking has an issue to where the game reads you as releasing the mouse button (despite your having never released it) and then re-‘clicks’ the button down quickly. Due to this issue, if your cursor was over/near another friendly, then they become your new target as if you had intentionally clicked on them to select them.

Issue: Total Target Loss Due To Mouse Button Losing Focus and Reacquiring It Quickly Over Empty Area of the Screen

  • However, disabling right-click targeting and interaction has simply made the issue of a new target stop happening, the issue of losing your target due to the glitch in mouse focus persists. Now we just have target loss due to the quick un-click and re-click of the right mouse button over an empty area of the screen which deselects the current target; instead of both target loss and random friendly selection.

Yeah, I had an appalling time last night trying to target. I thought it was just my crappy mouse and how my play area is set up but its good to know (sort of…) thakittens not just that. Thanks for the info.

The bug recently started up with me since the first patch after Aetherblade Retreat (one patch AFTER AR was released). Since then, I have gotten used to using my thumb for right clicking and it feels awkward to use my middle finger for RMB, especially since it still bugs out.

In the thread I linked there is a comment where a person suggested using the program ‘AutoHotKey’ and gives a little script you save for it to run.

What it does is it makes your middle mouse button (clicking the wheel in) act as a right mouse button that is always held down. Then clicking it again (or even actually hitting your right mouse button) causes it to disable. And it is only active for GW2.

I use it daily now since this issue has been so bad recently.

So I click my MMB in and it is as if I am holding my right mouse button. Then I either hit my actual RMB to disengage it or hit the MMB again. It really does help and it is not affected by the losing focus issue.

Also, I’m wondering if this issue is potentially related to the mechanics behind our cursor actually moving several pixels after we click and drag it before it actually activates as being clicked and dragged. Perhaps there is an issue with the tracking in that manner.

Well, the AutoHotKey program and this little keybinding script really is helpful as you can actually play again without this losing focus issue, though it does take a little bit of getting used to. You can also define what button you may prefer instead of the middle mouse button. Mostly just need to look at what the program refers to the key you want to use as and replace “MButton” in the script with the designation for the key you want.

Can also give more help if anyone chooses to give this a try and needs a hand.

I honestly thought it was Anet’s way of ensuring that people don’t just stand there and auto-attack for meta-boss events, but apparently not. I always figured when my target (Jormag in this case), dropped, that it was really annoying but necessary to make sure bots don’t get a cut of the rewards. I found it really annoying that my target would randomly drop every few seconds and I would have to zoom out, click on the target, (Dragons are really big targets), and then zoom back in, and if this is a bug, then it’s a really dumb bug.

This target locking issue has been prevalent for as long as i can remember it was never fixed. I am getting tired of constantly losing target and having to manually click on the target. This is just utter crap. Try this in WvW in a massive Zerg vs Zerg its impossible.
