Loot Solo vs Group
Sorry I can’t point you to any official responses on this: some may exist but if they do I am not sure where they are.
But since launch I have found drastically more loot in a full party than flying solo without one. If it is in fact more lucrative to be in a party, it’s probably got something to do with everyone in the party getting “credit” from enemies who your teammate attacks, meaning you don’t have to do as much damage to people to get in on some of this credit.
Even if this is false, one has nothing to lose by being grouped up so I always form my own parties when fighting in zergs (both in wvw and pve). Just invite random people around you til the group fills.
If you find people are hostile to this, you can make a macro and copy and paste it in whispers to people before you invite. Mine says something like “inviting random folks to fill up party – feel free to ignore the invite if you wish”. People decline sometimes but are less offended since I ask before hand.
These are just my suggestions – there may be easier ways I run with guides mostly so we group obviously, but for when I’m solo I still find people to join group.
If nothing else I find it more fun to socialize in a smaller party than cluttering map chat (especially wvw), so it’s really win-win-win in my eyes if the question is whether or not to group with others in a zerg.
To each his own though. I’ve got no proof myself so I have no right to tell other people I’m right. If they disagree. I just kindly move on to the next person to invite.
Edit: I know you didn’t ask for tips or advice, just offering to anyone reading who may be interested in the ideas. Hope I didn’t hijack the question

Loot definitely improves a lot in a group for whatever reason. Personally I believe it makes no sense when in the open world doing dynamic events because the idea of these events is that you don’t have to formally group to do them together. Just another example of the contradictions in the game design.

from my experience:
1) solo you need to contribute enough damage to get loot;
2) in party its enough to hit once, and if party contributes enough damage you get loot.
in group events when there are a lot people nearby its very hard to deal enough damage solo as trasmobs/champs die too fast, while in party its a lot easier.

Actually in all my time grinding in CS i found out that you need to hit the mobs at least 2 times in order for them to drop anything…sometimes as a staff ele i dont have the chance to even drop my aoe before the horde of people grinding events with me kill everything in sight

I seem to recall that being in a group increases your chance of loot. That a certain amount of damage as to be done before you get a chance for loot to drop and the damage from party members to the same mob adds to your own.
I’ve noticed in Orr, the difference between the amount of loot I get when soloing and when I partied with random people doing the same event.
ANet should make this very public to encourage people to party up.
Being in a group definitely increases the amount of loot. You can solo, but you’ll get less loot doing so. It’s one of the reasons I hardly ever play alone. I’d rather play with friends anyway.
It’s just way one Anet encourages players to group. I’ve seen a lot of threads that say you can solo this game, so there’s no reason to group. Obviously not true.
What Anet has done a terrible job on is letting people know that you get better loot for grouping.
Well the question was “better” loot, but they did describe more as well.

I don’t think the quality of loot is dictated by being in a group or playing solo. He means more if you read his post again though.
I am not aware of the the ruling of getting credit for kills of your party mates when you are in a party though. If that is the case, then it is really generally better to party up especially when you are in a zerg since the chances of tagging mobs or enemy players in WvW is higher while in a party.
later. It doesn’t care that I’m there.”
I have solo’ed most of the PvE content in the game, and also done some group PvE on occasion. I have noticed no difference in loot drops, both in quantity and quality between solo and group play. If anything, the drops were worse when in a group.
Also, it is extremely rare for me to respond to ninja party invites from any players outside of my guild. If a player whispers me first, or requests help in map chat, then I am more inclined to accept, unless I am about to do something else or log-off.
It’s not really more/better loot, but easier time to “tag” mobs. Tagging mobs is dealing enough damage to warrant an exp and loot reward from it. Somehow, if you’re solo, you need to deal more dmg to be able to successfully “tag” the mob. If you’re in a party, the damage is spread out over your party mates (which is why it’s also important your mates are hitting the same mob/group of mobs as you are, assuming you’re doing AOE) such that you only need to deal less damage to successfully “tag” the mob, hence, earning you the right to exp and loot for that mob (group of mobs).
