MARA (EU) Gunnar’s Hold
Loot and the lack thereof
MARA (EU) Gunnar’s Hold
The loot is there. My first thought was ascended weapon boxes. I can’t recall if there are ascended armor boxes, but I think they are.
This is an MMO issue — the loot must be throttled to protect the economy. One solution is “Bind on Acquire”. Diablo 3 switch to BoA and now the loot drops like rain in spring. It feels very rewarding.
At the same time Diablo 3 also has the issue of the rewards not being worth it as you’re looking for upgrades . . . and after some time, you don’t often see stuff which is an upgrade.
It was one of the reasons I threw Diablo 2 out as soon as Nightmare Difficulty hit – the loot was unrewarding, even with as much as I got. It was rarely an upgrade, and even rarer was it something which would keep me alive longer in some of the nastier encounters.
And from a different angle . . . it’s not nearly as crushing as going caving in Minecraft.
If I build a game and a loot table I might have 100 items in that table. 30 trash items, 25 ordinary, 20 quality, 15 high quality and 10 uber items. As the game goes along I introduce a drop item, such as the recent collectibles I am not going to add it to the loot table as it introduces too many issues with the rng so I replace an existing item with the new one. Then I decide to add a new super-uber class of equipment. By adding this I have to alter the odds in all the other categories. Every time I make such adjustments to the table it affects the individual gamer.
However there is another problem and that is the global game economy. If I have only 100 people playing my game the number of super-uber items on the market are going to be low but if I have 10,000 people playing I am going to be awash with those items so I have to play with the odds in each category giving more weight to trash items and less to the higher level categories.
So the problem in loot and the lack thereof can be blamed on more items being introduced into the game and more people playing the game.
At least that is the way I understand it all!
I have been getting a lot of exotics recently…I kind of ‘have a feeling’ that I am going to get a precursor soon as well…

simply Gw1 had a better loot system where if you wanted a specific item you knew where and who to farm to get it. Almost every expansion Boss had at least 1 item assigned to them and some had multiply items. Sure the chances were slim on some items to obtain but if you really desired that 1 item you had the option of farming till you drop.
Gw2 needs to bring back some of that feeling from GW1 in farming and get rid of the RNG as it dosn’t work , eg: I had never done the new Teq till a week ago so according to RNG I should get something decent since I havent been in that map for like ever, yet my reward was pathetic to say the least for completing Teq. I got 1 rare the rest was crap. So I won’t be going there again and wasting my time or effort for nothing.
There is no fun in farming anywhere in GW2, if you farm in a low level you get the same crap as you do in farming in any high level.
And I really miss the chest farming from GW1 lol
cheers
My problem with the loot system is not the quantity of loot. Actually, the game showers us with drops. The problem is that almost all drops are crap. The only thing you do with your drops is selling them or salvage them. You don’t use them.
Almost never a useful item drops. Well, useful items do drop, but not the exact item I want and I need. If I want a useful item, I have to buy it in the TP instead.
The loot system fills the TP, and if players want an item, they buy it from the TP. But directly using a drop rarely happens for me. The real item source is the TP (or crafting). If instead of items only money drops and the TP still has every item for sale, my game experience doesn’t change at all. But if I buy everything from the TP, what’s the point of item loot? It would be better with money drops, because I would not waste my time to salvage/sell all this junk.
One cause, in my opinion: the usefulness of an item is determined by the probability that it has the attributes I want. The item type I want has to drop (a staff, a sword), and the attributes must fit.
Unfortunately, there are so many items in the game and so many attribute combinations, that the combination I want almost never drops. Even if the correct item type drops (1 out of 19 with weapons), the attribute combination (1 out of ~10) must fit, making it 1/19*1/10 = 0.005 = 0.5 percent probability that a given drop is exactly what I want.
The ascended weapon and armor chests that drop in the fractals are a step in the right direction, because they reduce the amount of combinations, but that’s only for ascended gear. And in my opinion it’s still too random. Too many of my ascended chests still sit unopened in my inventory, because they still don’t give me the armor/weapons I intend to use for any character. I simply don’t need healing power or condition damage in PvE, for example.
Is the loot getting worse or is it the way its being given out, I seen a convo in map chat the other day that said only so many people get loot from an enemy/boss everyone else gets nothing, I never thought anything of this, but then I got thinking, in the mornings I usually do the world bosses, and ive noticed that they no longer drop champ bags, ( MAW, Taidha Covington, sometimes Karka Queen, usually all 3 champs and final boss at Ulgoth ) these are just some of the events I fail to get champ bags from on a daily basis, no matter how much damage I do,
If its raw loot drops your on about there are some shocking examples out there also, The Temple of Lyssa chain has to be 1 of the most unrewarding events in the game, they removed nearly all LOOT from the events for whatever reason, the North pre was nerfed because of the bugged farm, yet it wasn’t fixed for loot after the patch went thru to remove the bug, the entire event is hateful, and the worst part is, if I wanted too, I could wait until Lyssa was at 10% health run in hit her a few times and get the EXACT same LOOT as some poor player who suffered through the pre events, its shocking,
Megaserver also doesn’t help, where it did help some events in the game, others got destroyed, anyone who farmed cursed shore before Megaserver went live will know what I mean here, before you could do Melandru with 30-40 ppl and get decent loot, now there are 80-100+ people there, and you get little to no loot at all, I did this event on a full party with staff guards, and the main farm event Beacon 2, I got 5 drops, that was it, 5 drops in 6 mins ( and I run 300% MF ) its shocking,
Dungeons are not much better, and fractals are just appalling, instead of making new gems store items for the 1% you start looking at the issues that are being flagged by the 99%
Far to often you see on here its just RnG if the game is RnG only then remove all MAGIC FIND, as im sick of having 300% base magic find and up to 500% MF with boosters, and see people with 120% MF getting exotics etc on a daily basis, something is seriously broken here and broken badly.
A lot of my personal friends and myself feel the only thing keeping this game going, is that there isn’t a major contender for it yet, but im sure its not far away, you can only really push people so far before they say im done, and uninstall, and usually with that, they takes friends with them, I even told some of them the only reason I play is because they do, and they replied with the same, so really why do we play, to get laughed at from devs…..

This is a serious bug that has been around since the beginning of time. However, due to the players’ experiences with other MMOs, the community tends to think its a feature. Therefore there are not enough complaints about it.
Basically the system works like this. Everyone who does a certain amount of damage gets loot. HOWEVER, due to a bug, there is a cap. When things get crowded, only the first people to reach that damage threshold receive loot. This is why people in groups get loot more often (because the whole group gets damage threshold credit together) and why staff guardians get loot more often.
I have tested it. I have kitten so I loaded the karka WP first. Ice bowed the queen, then backed off and watched the rest of the fight. As a lousy mooch who did about 5k-10k damage total, I got the champ box off the corpse. Meanwhile others were complaining it didn’t drop for them. They were the ones who stuck around and did hundreds of thousands of damage to it.
Another thing is that there is no unique loot. Every area has the same kind of loot. There are no special areas with special skins like Urgoz or Deep in GW1 with Zodiac skins (yeah we got that as gem store CRAP).
There are also no bosses who drop unique named and cool looking weapons with special features. It’s so boring.
‘would of been’ —> wrong
I hate to break it to you, but all signs point towards the gem store. It just seems like that is the direction things are going in this game.
Soraya Mayhew – Thief
Melissa Koris – Engie – SF for Life!

No unique loot is what allows the game to be “played your way”. You always have a chance at a precursor, or ascended box. It’s a beneficial feature but, as I mentioned earlier, it requires lower drop rates over unique loot encounters — which is why general play can feel less rewarding.
i think the dungeons are ok .. how can you expect tons of loot when you can do it on auto-pilot and in a average of 10 / 20 Minutes on certain path ….the rewards must scale with the effort and difficulty and this is where this game fail at.
I have done over 300 fractals if not more and no fractals skin yet … you can get all the worst fractals and Mai Trin as the final boss in a Lvl 30 + and you get ZERO ring at the end .. when im getting one its a Healing signet or a Ouroboros Loop .. my bank is already full of both ring …. oh and if you get a exotic armor its account bound !!!
Why in this game the easy stuff is more rewarding then the difficult content !! … i get more loot in 30 minute in EOTM than in a high Fractals ??

I think it is definitely a feature to prevent all players from trying to swarm in at the same time. Either that or it’s an unintended feature which is supposed to do that.
I think it’d be better if it could be guaranteed everyone in the zone can receive loot from a world boss in the zone, mechanically, even if everyone isn’t fighting that world boss . . . but then, I also know the more people you pour on the enemy, the faster they die, and the greater chance people don’t break the threshold for loot.

Metrics, they want the metrics to show exactly what they want. EotM is so rewarding so that they could say players asked for more WvW development and we gave them a new map that is a huge success. If they didn’t make the rewards good then metrics would not be what they want them to be.

But that isn’t what’s happening. What happens is that threshold for loot is capped about 0.5 – 1 seconds after the enemy spawns despite the fact that the enemy stays intact for 2 minutes.
Anyone who:
1. Isn’t in a party
2. Loads in slower at WPs
3. Has a long delay before their skill casts (staff eles and LB rangers)
Will miss the chance, even if they become the single highest contributor by the end of the fight.
Only enemies with scaled HP are affected by this it seems. The HP scales, but not the kill cred.
They did it with scarlet during her invasion missions. Before she scaled, only a few people could get the event, but if they did, they got her loot. After she scaled, it was near impossible to get her loot unless she spawned on you, but getting her event was easy.
It’s not a feature. Even if they came out and said it was, I’d put real money down that wasn’t their original intent.

That’s not exactly accurate. My staff ele (ungrouped) usually can get the drops even if i start dps-ing with a significant delay.
Yes, getting the mob tagged is easier within first seconds, before mob scales up, because it’s not the flat damage but damage relative to the mob hp that counts (and in those first seconds mob has way lower hps, so even one solid hit can possibly move you past the threshold). This doesn’t mean that the people that join later won’t be able to get it – they will just need to deal more damage.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Rewards are fairly poor everywhere in game now, or at least it appears this way.
I hate to break it to you, but all signs point towards the gem store. It just seems like that is the direction things are going in this game.
Yes… most of the work ANet does is gemstore….and it’s been increasing. The game transformed into Gemstore Wars 2 with pve/wvw/pvp as an optional mod to the game.
People who play the game are apparently considered more and more second rate compared to gemstore players.

I’ve tested for that, and that doesn’t seem to be the case. And if it is the case, the damage requirement shoots well over 2 million, which again points to this being a bug.
We had an Ulgoth situation where my guild (all in zerkers) missed the first hit because a ranger Point Blank Shotted him pretty far away. Afterward two of us dropped ice bows and we skill 4’d him. Then we kept the DPS up for the entire fight.
No credit.
Meanwhile, the fight before, all I did was drop my two arcane skills on him as soon as he became vulnerable and auto-attacked after that and I got credit while I wasn’t partied. And again, people who were there the whole time were saying “lol no loot.”
Every time I get credit coming in late, I notice there aren’t as many people around as I thought or I remember I was in a group and they probably got the first few hits for me.
my closest mate in game has had 10 precursors drop and has 8 legendaries. he gets one about every 300 hours gameplay wise. Me, being at 4k hours, have only gotten one drop and it was about 70 hours into the game and I Sold it not knowing what a precursor was. The loot/rng in this game is absolutely off the wall insane
What exactly does he do to get that drop rate? play random, play only dungeons..etc. Elaborate a bit i am curious. Did u do the same thing as him?

I’m doing Ulgoth regularly, and i usually get the drops… unless i happen to be run over few times by the knockdown winds. Even if i start dps-ing late (which i often do).
I’m pretty sure there are other considerations here, and that tagging in general is bugged, but i don’t think it is bugged in the exact way you described.

Yeah, I heard and read that.
That’s why I lead off that part with “I think it would be better if”. Even though part of me thinks it’d be a technical nightmare to try.

I’ve had the Karka Queen not give me drops plenty of times, but I don’t know if that’s because her drops are in the chest instead . . . or this bug going on.
What I do know is if a boss dies really . . . really . . . fast, then there are a lot of people who don’t get loot. Shadow Behemoth used to be infamous that way.

I do tend to get a bit defensive about this subject. I am the only person I know who has come to this conclussion, but I’m about 95% sure of it.
Turns out, I lost my head and missed the “I think it would be better if” part. Oops.
I apologize.

I can confirm that she does have drops. Like I said, I have a solid state drive so I load in faster when she spawns near the other waypoint. Every time that happens, I get loot. (You can also tell if EXP pops up on the screen after she passes her first phase before she regens half her HP in a weakened state.)
For events, scaling works properly. Like you said, SB is easier to get credit on now. This is good because you can still get the chest and the daily and all that when you come in late. Even the champ events like Ulgoth correctly gives event credit to those who dealt a lot of damage. It’s just the actual mob kill exp/loot that gets bugged.
Honestly, this might be the least rewarding MMO I’ve ever played. I love it to death, but there isn’t really any reason to do much of anything in the game besides dungeons. Champ bags need to be more rewarding, for one. Pretty much everything in the game needs to be reworked in terms of rewards. More importantly, someone at Anet needs to find a way to make crafting profitable. Why would anyone want to level up their crafting professions when they cost so much and aren’t really good for much?
The loot system of this game mechanics is great in allowing all participants to get some loot. However, the RNG used is the worst I’ve seen from any MMO. What Anet should do to fix this problem:
Stick with present RNG fixed percentage they use now ….but put in multiplicative factors based upon your character’s experience, magic find (MF), etc.
a) Map completion – 3x the percentage drop
b) Dungeon Master – 2x the percentage drop
c) MF – direct multiplier to the percentage drop
d) Other – PVP completion, achievement accomplishments also apply as factors
So, if a player has 250% MF, Map completion, dungeon master their loot drop percentage would be:
whatever the static percentage for getting that particular loot item from its pool * 2.5 * 3 * 2
This way Anet would encourage players to participate in more aspects of the game. At present, this simple fixed percentage system they use is too-simple minded.
More importantly, someone at Anet needs to find a way to make crafting profitable. Why would anyone want to level up their crafting professions when they cost so much and aren’t really good for much?
Most MMOs have this issue. Only the top tier of crafting is profitable. I think it’s because all lower level materials become overpriced as they become a stepping stone for getting to top tier.
However, the top tier of crafting in GW2 is ascended and legendary. Ascended is account bound and legendaries drain at least 250 of each T6 material. Therefore, the T6 prices are likely to gravitate toward legendaries more than exotics.
This is just my theory though. I’m not an economist.

Stop toiling for it and just do what you want to do, or just take a break and check in only for the LS2 unlocks.
Sadly I wanted the ascended medium coat for transmute so I had to level up leatherworking from 1-500. Sadly….
I don’t have full ascended ANYTHING. I have some trinkets due to having laurels, 1 piece of ascended armor and 1 ascended longbow I got from a drop box over a year ago. You see, I refuse to play the vertical gear progression game. I refuse to swallow the bait and switch that the Manifesto became at Launch.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…
I don’t play that game either. I still poke my head in and see what I can make from time to time. I’ve been surprised in finding by just casually dropping materials into the process I’ve crafted two Ascended armor pieces (medium coat and arms) and had a Wupwup bow drop for me.
So while I don’t play the game by devoting every moment slavishly tracking what I need . . . I’m still steadily getting there. Faster than I could get “God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals” . . . gods what a grindfest that was . . .
I agree that loot is terrible.
World bosses like tequatl giving greens is just unacceptable. For a fight that need massive coordination and 20 mins needs at least 1×100% exotic. They give us 4 boxes as a compensation that often give us 3×100% rare (+ that awesome 0.01% RNG) and all other items are green and blue plus that stupid exotic spoon that you know what to do with it (i think i am speaking for the all players been there).
Recently i am playing 10+ hours a day farming to make my legendary. 4 weeks needed to only buy precursor. and yet 6-10 weeks left to farm gold for materials. thats 14 weeks of non stop playing. For those casuals who play 4 hours a day that would be like 1 year to make legendary.
Make world bosses 1 timers with 1 exotic drop that give ppl hope to work for.
Or just rename this game to Grind Wars 2.

I believe the Claw can drop Jormag’s Needle and whatever that Icy Dragon Sword one is called, as well.
And on top of that, virtually all dungeon bosses and many world bosses have one or more unique accessories.
OP, it’s called RNG, and your experiences only reflect one person’s loot table. Been hardcoring dungeons since the start (4-8 paths a day) and the only loot thing that’s changed is that HOTW-1 doesn’t fill your bags twice — And that was done in 2013.
question to arena net how do u build items in game that dont have item progression only dress up skin chase on raids also when raids come instanced ones what kid of items we gonna receive i personally dont care about skins i like to make my character stronger and stronger whit higher statcs and i know gw is not that kind of game so are u gonna give me just skin and accivments on raids ?
Most likely, yes. If Tequatl and the Triple Wurm are anything to go by, any raid content in the future will just give out achievements and rare skins (possibly new Ascended weapon sets like the Sunless set).
I’ve noticed that since April…
I’ve noticed since the last time I played before taking a break that the game now throws loot at you left, right and center. To the point where it’s basically meaningless.
Perhaps they should decrease drop rates so players will be more appreciative to receive loot that they now consider junk because how frequently you get it.
Imo all boss type enemies should have a chance of dropping an unique (to the boss design) weapon, armor or backpack item with a fitting skin. Like for example a dredge champ should have a chance to drop the backpiece lantern thingy all dredge carry on their back while an ettin champ should drop his club (yea the ettin club is already an exotic in game i am aware of that), a flame shaman maybe parts of the rags and lioncloth he wears..or his fire “gloves” while for example an ice brood norn might drop “ice gloves” or something. Also the world bosses should have FULL (and unique to their design) armor chests (not just stupid reskins of the ascended gear like teq and the worm do). Also “civilised” mobs (basically any mob thats a member of a playable race) in general should do that and imo should get unique armors with a design fitting to what they do (ALSO IN CLASS!!!), not just recolours of existing sets (like seperatists, flame legion, inquest, nightmare court, sons of svanir, pirates…etc..etc..) and have a chance to drop a piece of their armor (or weapon for that matter) as “rng” reward rather then an item with a “regular” skin. Like if you for example encounter…lets say an inquest infiltrator (whats obviosly something like a thief) that said infiltrator should have his own inquest themed (medium) armor in asura style with thief elements (like extra knives or something) while for example an inquest agent (a type of elemental mage who uses fire attacks) should have an inquest themed light armor with clearly towards elementalist leaning design. Well obviosly that would make a LOT of work to make all these armors and skins and what not for all races.. thats where a sort of “race recognition” script would come in (or something like this, im just thinking out loud).
For example you play an asura and fight the inquest, they will get a chance to drop the special skins.. but if you play a human..they wont (still normal loot drops, just not the unique armor skin items), also works the other way arround..like if you play human and fight the seperatists you might get an unique skin, while as asura you wont…basically cultural armor that would spice up the mob apperances AND stock up the armor pool at the same time, more interresting mobs and the “oh hey thats a nice looking item” effect at the same time. Maybe it also just would be like the usual “normal” skins and drop for all races alike.. but if you happen to be the right race you get the unique skin while as the “wrong” race you wont and just get the “usual” stuff. Unique weapons would drop for all the same obviosly and could be also spread out at the heart karma vendors as quest rewards… makes leveling a LOT more interresting aswell if you think about it. Then a-net can keep its greens and blues like they are… cause they atleast look interresting. Also the npc armor skins should be turned to greens and blues and made available either in towns at these “useless” basic armor and weapon merchants or via random loot drops.
Well thats just what i would say if a-net would ask me how to make the loot better (or atleast more interresting)
My main issue with loot is that i am getting fed up with all them Blues and Greens i get at lvl80. I guess a rare item is really rare, cos i rarely get a rare, unless a rare material also counts as a rare (i get those alot more).
And an Exotic, cant remember the last time i got one.
I have one suggestion, stop giving us (me) blue items at lvl80.
I already consider Greens (almost) useless at lvl80.
Feels so unrewarding at lvl80, getting blue weapons and armors.

Has not always been this way. Loot drops in the past were much more rewarding.
Just completed Jormag & most items were simple trash, same with the jungle worm, Ulgoth, shadow behemoth etc. I was going to head off to complete the Taidha Covington event – why waste my time.
While I do not expect tons of rares, exotic’s or precursors to drop on a regular basis; what we receive now is mostly worthless, outside of breaking items down for increasing magic find & base components.

Try improving your Magic Find. Do you break down your blues and greens and consume the luck, or do you sell them?
I’ve noticed that since April, there has been a steady decline of loot in dungeons. After the April feature patch, the content inside “bonus” chests is ALWAYS without fail 3xBlues. If you’re lucky enough to get a rare, it’ll be a useless tonic.
I’ve just ran through a Fracal, with 257% Magic Find and walked away with Blues/Greens and 1 single rare! That rare was salvaged using the Silver-fed o-matic and got me 2xSilk, not even an Ecto.
What is the point in doing dungeons if there is no loot reward? I enjoy dungeons and like to “grind” my money/materials that way, but it’s been taken away to the point that unless you run 20 dungeons a day, it’s no longer worth it.
The game is all about grinding gold to BUY materials from the over-priced TP instead of being able to obtain the materials yourself.
Bring back dungeon and fractal loot! I remember getting rares every run, even an exotic ocasionally that I could salvage or sell for materials. But now, I get rares like I get exotics … never or once in a blue moon, and get exotics as if they were precursor drops … once in a lifetime.
Honestly, the drop rates are completely rediculous and need to be revised accross the board.
Welcome to what every open world player has been experiencing for 2 years straight. I doubt very much that anything will happen, as most of the time the defenders come on here and tell us all it’s all in our heads that nothing is dropping. I personally believe that it’s an ongoing effort to try to keep their economy in check by changing the values when they seen too many items listed. I have never trusted or liked their economist and think they could do so much better.
DR has yet to stop a single bot but it’s been negatively affecting players for years now.
Even Blizzard learned from their mistakes and removed DR and added a 100% increased drop rate for these items to make it easier for players to get the materials they needed in Diablo III.

question to arena net how do u build items in game that dont have item progression only dress up skin chase on raids also when raids come instanced ones what kid of items we gonna receive i personally dont care about skins i like to make my character stronger and stronger whit higher statcs and i know gw is not that kind of game so are u gonna give me just skin and accivments on raids ?
Because, in short, this game is not about gear grinding. At any given level all drops are equivalent…with very few exceptions. At level 80, all gear is equivalent based on rarity. This has been the goal of this game from its inception. Best in slot has very small increases to overall functionality related to the next best item.
If you are a person that desires vertical rather than horizontal progression, unfortunately you did not understand this game when you bought it.

You’re right in that it hasn’t always been this way. World Bosses didn’t always guarantee at least one rare, meaning it was sometimes worse than it is currently. Not to mention Tequatl’s revamp allowing a successful run to get a lot more loot . . .
So, it’s actually gotten better than it used to be. Also, now Final Rest is actually more likely to be seen outside chat codes

So, i guess you have answered that question for you. It is not the vertical progression kind of game, so you should not expect better stats or anything that would make your character stronger.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
you people have to understand one simple thing: you are not supposed to get nice stuff for playing the game. You are not supposed to get gold by in game means. The only thing you are supposed to do is to buy gems for real money. It’s obvious ANet is continuously stealth nerfing any source of in game income into oblivion.
There have been some rewards lately that have been thinly veiled currency sinks as well. The Karmic Converter earned for getting the Champ Box skins is one. Mawdrey is another albeit not a currency sink.
Rewards for players collecting things shouldn’t come in the form of a gold, karma or token sink. They should just be rewards. “Hey! You can get the Karmic Converter so you can spends thousands of karma a day! Congratulations!” Those weren’t the types of “rewards” we used to get. I would very much appreciate returning to how much more rewarding the game felt in the first year.

Interesting yesterday when I had my level 80 engie clearing the map in Frostforge. Jormag was running so since he was in the neighborhood I wandered over and set myself up with the elixir gun and played healer. I did swap out to hit Jormag when the wall was down but obviously did not do enough damage as I did not receive a bonus chest for my efforts.
