Love the game, dislike my character
In the time it takes for arenanet to decide on this (so far, they’ve said no to it), it may be better just rolling a new race and profession if you don’t like engineer that much. To be honest, I don’t see them ever deciding to allow characters to swap professions, much less races until at least a few years down the line.
Regarding clothes, remember you have other choices, though you’re somewhat restricted to male only gear on some items. There’s a coat or two which is only available in story mode, for example (Commando’s Jacket), which definitely screams “engineer” to me – I found it on my thief, and bankmuted it over to my (at the time) level 10 engineer to use, haha.
If you really dislike that character/profession so much, why don’t you level a different one? It will take you, what? 3 to 4 weeks at most to get to level 80. If you are planning to play for a long time then that’s nothing. Why would you stick to a profession that bores you or you dislike the way they look?
And yes, I have 8 level 80s so I do know about the grind it takes to level one.
I understand what Invoker is saying. My first character was a Char Engineer. I got him up to level 17 I think before starting on another. I’ve got 4 lvl 80’s and working on 2 more that are higher than him, and none have been Char nor an Engineer. Although I do intend on finishing my only ever Char and my only ever Engineer some day.
As far as those who say leveling is a grind. It doesn’t need to be, just make sure that things you’re going to do anyway that can be done on the lower level character are. Most of the daily items, many world events and special events can be done on lower levels. Those and a new personal story and eventually you’ll have leveled a new character. Of course, if you consider pretty much everything a grind that’s a bigger issue than a character you’re not fond of playing.
Oh, almost forgot, race and/or profession change is a very bad idea that will hopefully never happen.

I have the exact opposite problem to the OP, I love my character but now dislike the game. To clarify, I have a male human thief with full tier 3 armor and 2 incinerators, the character looks better than anything I’ve ever had playing MMO’s, its just such a pity that the game is so shallow, and the content that gets added is just so weak its now laughable. I really wanted to play this game for a long time, and its not easy to leave such an awesome looking character, but there isnt much point having such a great character when its in such a bad game.
I expect when games like Wildstar, Archeage, Blade & Soul release there will be a huge amount of people move to those games from GW2, as right now its just seriving as a stop gap for a large amount of people waiting for a real MMO.
My engineer is my least played character. The only viable builds I’ve found involve ground-targeted skills and spamming these skills while kiting is a prescription for a repetitive strain injury. I keep hoping they’ll re-engineer the engineer, but until they do I won’t be playing mine. The answer here is simple; reroll another profession.
On playing a charr, I have less sympathy as my Charr warrior is my most played character. I love him as he just seems the archetypal badkitten. I do have issues with the Charr in terms of responsive character navigation. There should be improvements ideally, but I’ve made peace with it for now.
I’m actually with the poster above in getting less and less excited about the game. I used to enjoy playing in cursed shore, but with the post January changes it’s no longer any fun to play there and wouldn’t be for any except those who enjoy failure and continuous wipefests. GW2 has serious problems around balance. Both in terms of professions and general game balance. I don’t know how long the game will be able to endure the imbalance.
My Engineer is totally the opposite Asura Engi running a Flamethrower /Elixir gun build (because to me those kits make sense) i totally hate how they are so weak and useless but its kind of “ok” in PvE..
The primary weapons are a joke to use, especially pistol damage..Rifle is not a Rifle its a broken Shotgun.. i just cannot bring myself to use turrets (useless die in 1 sec) Grenades (can’t hit squat with my ping time) Bombs (just dumb to use to me) and Wrench (if i was a melee class maybe that would make sense)…
So i stick to ranged kits and Elixirs hoping one day i’ll be viable in all aspects, but not holding my breath..
I love my charr engi, but if you don’t just reroll, a couple months and you’ll be at the point you are now again :p
If you don’t like the kit just play a fun kit, you don’t have to be optimal if its not fun.
Well I have to disagree with everyone’s dislike for the engineer. I do agree they have a slow start but once I got to 80 it became my favorite class and my warrior and necromancer are sitting there collecting dust.
I use 0/30/0/20/20 for my traits and have Superior Runes of the Fighter and I use rocket boots, flamethrower, and tool kit as my utilities. Most of my gear is based around power, toughness, and precision. It isn’t the most optimal build by far, but I can last a lot longer with that than I do with my warrior.
I also use the rifle for a neat little combo, I wait until I have my Hidden Flask trait activate, use the Net Shot to keep the enemies still, use Jump Shot to close the gap and deal some good damage, use the Rocket Kick to put a nice burning on them and close further distance, then use Pry Bar, then switch back to rifle and use Concussive Shot and Rocket Boots to get some distance as my skills recharge.
That is my favorite part of the class, with trying to find to perfect setup and know what kits and elixirs to use when and pull of some good damage. I say stick with it and hopefully the class will grow on you.
P.S.
I know I’m going to sound like a kitten and I apologize but it is a pet peeve of mine so I just have to say it, it is charr not char!
Those feels, bro. I know them too well.
My first Charr was a Necromancer, whom I got to level 30 and quit.
Then I made a Charr Guardian, thinking the heavy armor would look better. I deleted him at 50.
Aaand finally, I made a Charr Elementalist. Got him to 70. Deleted him..
I should learn my lesson, but I don’t. I dislike how armor fits on Charr. I dislike how they all look so much the same, and all the male faces, much like asura, are all horrible except one. I would like a more customized Charr.
I have never had a Charr but I absolutely love my Engineer.
I run Pistol/Pistol, flamethrower and grenades with Rampager gear
I have this little RP running in my head that my character is this totally bad kitten pyro maniac.
The fact that she is a girl makes it even cooler to me.
My suggestion to you, if you love the game but hate your character is just to reroll.
A huge part of the game is all about your character and you will have much more fun if you are happy with your choice.
Welcome to the life of a Medium armor class.
Something that’s been in dire need of visual buffs for the longest.
Guild wars 2 as a whole is a fantastic game, not as good as it was at launch “nostalgia” :’(
I really feel like it has the ability to last, i have a char statue right next to me, and the collectors edition painting in my kitchen, but i cant seem to get into the dern game for very long..
Let me start by saying that i play a Char Engineer, at first, i enjoyed the new race, it was different, i liked running on all 4’s and i liked wacking things with me ol wrench and throwing nades.
In the long term however, i began to realize that i picked perhaps the WORST combo of all time. Let me number reasons to make it clear
1) Char looks like a dog with a muzzle in engineer clothes
2) The shield protrudes so far from the actual body of the char, that its an immediate immersion breaker, unless the char is controlling the shield by some magnetic force, its a real goof.
3) The best way to kill things in Spve is with bombs. Bombs kill things so fast that it makes no sense to try any other toolkit in pve, i can kill a group of 20 mobs my level in about 8 seconds with bombs, not possible with any other toolkit
4) I dislike the rifle animation, it looks so unrealistic, each time i shoot my char looks the same and i feel like im playing a robot the moment i start shooting rifles
5) as an engineer, i cant see any weapons when im toolkiting
6) sometimes i just wana get on and kill stuff, but with the engi its so dull. I walk up, plant 5 bombs, kill, repeat. bombs would have a more lasting, immersive effect if ragdolls were more prevalent
7) The morter has no polish to its funtions at all, my char clips into the morter and sometimes the shells lag and then suddenly all come out at once, its a nightmare
8) Its EXTREMLEY hard to role play and engi char, i really wish i had some cooler gear options, leather just looks so drab and i dont think anyone could tell im an engineer at first glance
9) Coming back after a long break is hard with the engie, as each time i have a different motive, weather its a hack and slash feel or a explosion feel, i have to go respec each time and its a real pain each time
10) engineer just doesnt feel like its meant to be played in 3rd person sometimes, its the only class that has a terrible time trying to make the camera work (especially with grenades)
Solution: Just let us change our race and class, i know you will do it one day, can you just do it now?
Your gear is awful.
Here is my Charr Engineer. Far from “a dog with a muzzle” as you put it.
Also rocking flamethrower and hidden pistols. It’s a blast playing Engineer.
But if you don’t like it. That’s fine. There’s plenty of other race/profession combos to choose from. Nothing stopping you from making another.

Bombs might be the best way to round up & kill fast in open world PvE, but it’s not the only good way. Switch it up. Try grenades or flamethrower. Or try to gather as many mobs as you can with bombkit, test your limits.
The engineer is the most fun profession in the game because it has so much versatility.
As for an option to change your race & profession: it’ll never happen. Your race determines your early personal story and identity. Anet has already said they won’t offer this option in the future. And I’m gonna put myself out there and say that no MMO ever has offered a paid profession change. Secondary professions sure, but not what defines you. You’re gonna have to reroll, sry. But hey, that means you can try a new race and new profession.

I don’t agree with the whole Medium Armour is horrible thing, my Engi is fabulous :P
