I have a problem I haven’t come across so far, and that is having ‘spare’ rare items. Either ones I cannot use or ones I have outgrown in level. The high level versions of these (68+, I believe) I am salvaging them into ecto for when I craft my endgame equips, but I find my bank filling up with these ‘useless’ rares.

Am I missing the point? Is there something to actually do with these that makes them so rare, or do I just vend/tp them like the more expensive green items? Is there a way to turn them into higher level rares, via the mystic forge or somesuch?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sell them in the TP.. the cs you get will pay for those Ectos.. I tried the converting of rares and its a game of chance or gambling.. I actually came out with a loss as some do not break down with ectos.

You will be ahead of the salvage by letting others do it.. and you get more cs selling it then how much ectos cost.

Edit: Just noticed you’re saving lvl 68… when I did rare to ectos.. i used lvl 74+.. not sure if you can get ectos from anything less then that. fyi

my 2 cents.

Rare crafting material used to make Legendaries. You get them from salvaging rare items. They are actually called Glob of Ectoplasm. But since GW1, people have always called them just Ecto.

As for your rares OP, just sell the low level ones for now if you aren’t using them. I don’t believe they give you ecto, only the level 70-80 ones do (unsure on this).

I assume to get ectos you have to use the master salvage kits (personally I just use master kits to get runes off items since I’m pretty cash poor for being lvl 80 so when I see items worth silver I npc them lol ) but I guess I’ll be giving it a try now thx

@Nordslayer (sorry quote is borked at the moment for me)

You don’t “have” to use master kits, but it increases the chance of course. Personally I just use a basic kit for salvaging random items like whites, blues, and greens. But I have a bunch of BLTC Salvage Kits in my bank from getting lucky with chests that I save just for rares. Master kits are pretty much the same thing, just a slightly lower chance.

Best to just pick one up when you get the money for it, and toss it in the bank. Then just save it for when you absolutely need it.

OK, thanks for the advice everyone.

Also, ecto’s are used in crafting for the level 80 exotics (which is what I’m collecting them for, I’m a bit casual for a legendary yet :P)

Oh, and Wilbert, I prefer to do things by myself, so I don’t like to buy from the TP so much. Personal choice though, even if it is not ‘optimum’.

Level 68-80 rare items give 0 to 3 ecto, exotics give 0 to 5 ecto. Salvaging exotics is useful when the rune or sigil is the same price or higher than the item itself and getting additional ecto further increases profit.

The wiki is not always accurate though.

Master Salvage Kit is 25% chance, costs 15 silver
Black Lion Salvage Kit is 50% chance, costs 300 gems.
