Low level transmuting

Do you think that players will spend 480 T-charges or ~11520 gems or ~$145 to look cool from 1-80?.
Depends.
Most players aren’t THAT fickle that they have to change their socks every 15 seconds…for the sake of fashion – but, that being said, there is a percentage of the player base with that kind of disposable income to drop a large amount of money on the game…even for vanity items.
Before the patch went live exploring a city was rewarded with three lesser transmutation stones = three transmutations were possible. Today one gets only 1 charge as reward, which is pretty disappointing. Especially low lvl chars want to experiment with different stats and they actually find better items continously, but also look as they prefer. A complete change requires 8 to 10 charges (depending on one- or two-handed weapons).
Now I only transmute items for one toon in its leveling phase, but only every 10 lvls or so, the others are doomed to look “funny”, without transmutation.

I feel sorry for them.

The current system favors store costumes greatly, since they don’t consume charges. Your suggestion sounds like a good compromise. –
I’m quite disappointed that it costs transmutation charges for characters < level 80. I ended up with about 110 transmutation charges from my transmutation stones, and I am loathe to use them on lower level alts. I wish we had the option to turn transmutation stones into charges, or keep them as is for low levels.
I would like saved sets of looks that you can switch to easily. I would like to change my looks with my mood or what I’m doing with out the barrier of using up charges or having to recreate a look I had. I like Lotro’s system of having sets that you switch between.
I would be ok with having to transmute the first time you make your look but after that I would like to freely switch between the looks.

haven’t played LotRO so i can’t comment on that but i am all for the second suggestion. it would pretty much disperse all my objections about the wardrobe

Costume doesn’t allow for many customization sadly.

I think that this is what my thread is about.

I have played it but only briefly and it was a while ago. At least back then options for getting the cash shop currency in game was quite limited. No idea if they had the equivalent of giving you charges for map completion/daily/PvP but you can’t just ignore that sort of thing if you are going to make comparisons.
Current system favors people at max level. GW2 is probably getting new players at a slow enough rate that “the majority of players are at max level” is not too far from the truth.
Once upon a time way back in beta, transmutation stones were available for karma. It’d be nice to see that reinstated, since the transmutation changes are particularly punishing for below-80s.

I agree but, it wouldn’t make Anet some money.

If they made it so you could set any combination of skins as your costume they could still charge for transmute charges and people leveling low level alts could have decent looking gear. Could even sell more costume slots so people could have multiple looks.

I don’t think it would work. For one, Icons will be a problem.
Second, it will take up a lot of space. ANet will have to create a combination of 6 piece armor for all existing armor.

I guess i can see the issue with icons although it could be limited to a set number just like bag slots. I’m not sure I really get what you mean about the pieces though. What I’m referring to is choosing the skinned look of 6 pieces of existing armor, then saving it as a “costume”. Essentially condensing the look you have into one costume. It would essentially use the resources that they already have in place, would have minimal impact on gem sales as it would still consume the same charges, and would give them another cosmetic item (the slots) to sell.
They should not have removed the “lesser” transmutation items. Why don’t they just bring back the lesser charges(and reward us with 3 lesser charges on like map completion), which could be used to transmute 1-79 gears and have the option to combine 3 lesser charges into 1 transmutation charge?
You can farm for transmutation in pvp i hope it help your problem.
I sure welcome the lesser transmutation charge which can be converted from normal charge at a 1-3 ratio.
I did but I now have 2 left lol. Also it kind of stinks wasting them when your leveling an alt changing out gear every 10 minutes. I don’t really worry about my gear much till 80 but it seems a lot of people do. I just figured this would be an fairly easy fix for that.
I would like to see gem-store purchased gear with a “Free to Apply” tag added to them, honestly. That’s about the only change I’d like to see.
If I spend dollars on gear skins from the cash shop I should be able to apply those skins without having to buy, or farm up, transmutation orbs.
The ridiculous cost of transmutation coupled with the poorly designed new trait system is what makes me refer to the April 15th patch as the ‘Punish New Players patch.’
Seriously, this patch was terrible for anyone not playing an 80. Between the cost of transmutation and the horrible rate in which you gain trait points, all customization has been removed for any player not level 80.
Unfortunately i have to agree with darth lama. regarding transmutation costs and trait gain rate …with one minor objection
it’s not that hot for level 80s either.

So what should PvE players do?

Transmuting gear while leveling was always a waste, it’s just that there was literally nothing else to do with transmutation stones.
Why should ANet do this? MONEY!
Why should ArenaNet NOT do this? MONEY!
Sorry. I’ve noticed my transmutation charges vanishing on my lower alts too. Because of that I’m either using an outfit to just cover it all or I’m just not caring. I don’t have the money to throw at NCsoft just for more charges….. BUT…. There are people that do.

Should ANet keep this to take money from the minority or change it to take money from the majority?

I still fail to see what you seem to be. I don’t get how there would be any taking of “money from the majority”. I am not a person that upon seeing that transmutation is free on low level alts will go, “Hey now I will go make more alts.”

It will make playing that alt more fun to play.
When the game is fun to play, players can go ahead and buy more character slots.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant
That could very well be true.
However I still stand that I’m not one of those people. I have far too many characters as it is and I’ve no need for more. I would like the game to be fun again, so I can enjoy the characters I have (lvl 80 or otherwise).
The speed with which you level and replace your current stat gear when you’re levelling from lvl 1 to 80 means you’ll have to transmute skins on to your next, higher-level stat gear over and over just to keep the looks you’ve initially transmuted.
It would counter Anet’s wish to make money from the gemstore, but ideally you should be allowed to transmute skins for free up to level 80 (or perhaps level 70?) since you’re replacing your stat gear all the time too and the time you get to enjoy your new looks is rather short compared to when you’re at level 80.
When you’re 80, you equip your exotics and get your skins sorted, and you won’t be facing any gear upgrades any time soon. Maybe you get ascended armor lucky drop or craft it, but it’s still a lengthy process and at this point it should charge you transmutations.
