Hi everyone. I really like the concept of Lunatic Inquisition mini game, but I bet most players will agree thats its quite unbalanced and lacks some polishing. So here are some thoughts how to make L. I. mini game much more fun with a few very simple and easy to implement improvements. No need to make big changes or redisign the whole game. Just a few minor fixes can make it so much more fun.

1. Killing a ghost. Now when villagers manage to kill a ghost it respawns almost instantly at the same spot. Thats just annoying and not fun at all.

Fix: ghost should be respawned at the center of the map after a 5 second cooldown. Also a ghost must recieve 5 seconds invulnerability buff in case some villagers go and stack at respawn spot with hammers/bones/rifle.

To avoid some silly situations (f. e. if villagers stack at the start of the game and just keep killing ghosts) if there are only 1 or 2 ghosts on a whole map (start of the round) they should respawn as they do now (same spot after a short cooldown). But when they get 1 or 2 conversions they should respawn at the center as described above.

2. Game feels too slow and long. ~13 minutes is too long, you can hear such complains all the time. Also, its not fun to wonder as a slow ghost and sometimes not even get engaged into some action. It is just too boring.

Fix: Make rounds last 10 minutes instead, while proportionally increasing movement speed for both villagers and ghosts for about ~ +20-25%. This will increase game dynamics a lot, while also making hiding in one place (what most people do now) less effective because ghosts move faster now, which means they can check hiding spots quicker now. While this will also make gathering items for NPCs more effective for villagers.

3. Item gathering for villagers is almost useless now. Thats why usually players dont even bother to start gathering items at all. In 100 games I never even saw a veteran guard spawn (requires to finish gathering event 3 times). Or saw a regular guard spawn (2 times gather event) a few times only. Even bonquets (1 time gathering event) are a rare thing to see.

Fix: Villagers must be able to stack items of same type up to 3. So if you gather bones 3 times you will get max stack. Using that items decreases stack by one. Dropping stacked item will remove all stacks and leave only 1 item on the ground. This will make gathering easier and much more fun.

Bonquets that are spawned after the first gathering event completion must remain till the end of round and never deplete. However, after using it a villager gets a cooldown for 60 seconds and can’t use it again until that. So that means you can also recharge your rifle every 60 seconds if you managed to get it. Again = more fun.

Bonquet should have 4 random spawning spots around the npc. So that if a ghost places a fake one somewhere near, a villager can’t be sure for 100% which one is the real one (only if villager saw it earlier, before the trap was set). That way fake traps will be more effective and fun too, cuz villagers must remember the spawn place of the real one near each npc.

Second event completion should spawn guardian monsters as it does now. But they must hit a lot harder and have much more hp. Atm they are complely useless. If they die – they should respawn after 30 seconds. Same for third event completion and veteran guards. May be a good thing to make a veteran respawn rate at 1 minute instead thou.

Now after third completion npc just dissapears. Not fun at all! If event is done fourth time or more, NPC should spawn an additional hammer. Thats more fun.

4. Mad King Says ability is to OP. Now it is just annoying, nothing more. Here is a whole topic about it btw. In my opinion it just needs to be 1 skill with 60 sec cooldown, not 5 skills like it is now.

5. Reward system is not encouraging. Why should I bother destroying all 4 alarms with hammer at start of the round as a villager if I most likely die and become a ghost?

It is like helping an enemy. Because if ghosts lose – they get zero reward. Or why should I try to score more points? I can just slack and do nothing untill the end of match. Not fun.

Fix Lets give top scored players more rewards! But only if there are certain amount of people in game (to avoid farming). If 10 players or more: 3 additional bags for top 1 player, 2 additional bags for top 2 player and 1 additional bag for top 3 player. If there are 15 or more: 1 addiotional bag for top 4 and top 5. It is not much, but still will make reward system and scoring much more sence and fun! Also, if ghosts lose, but a player scored atleast 150 points, he should recieve 1 bag as a booby prize.

6. Bugs/exploits/cheating. Now the only option for villagers to win is usually to hide in some places which are hard to reach for ghosts or event in places which are totally unreacheable by ghosts. Here are few examples:

Screenshot one
Screenshot two
Screenshot three

I think such secret spots are cool and fun to have thou, but those which cant be reached by ghosts now should become reacheable. Also speed boost will make it easier for both villagers and ghosts. So its fun stuff, dont see any reason why Anet should remove it.

P. S. I hope to hear your thoughts about it folks! Would be awesome if devs will make some improvements atleast for the next Halloween event.

Everyone who played this activity once would agree that it’s quite unbalanced.. Mad King Says is the most glaring offender and it’s basically “I win” button… times 5… Respawning ghosts is another major issue that’s apparent from the get-go.

The thing is that Lunatic Inquisition is an activity and activities are never on balance team radar (or apparently on the common sense radar). There have been multiple complaints and calls for easy fixes that’d improve the feeling of various activities going on from when the game was released (for example the multi-ball spam in kegbrawl), but nobody at ANet really cares or listens to those.
On the other hand, the awkward solution to getting into activities, lack of balance, lack of ability to play with friends and other inconveniences turns people away from said activities, so I can understand why ANet won’t commit even the least bit of effort into fixing them.. The demographics for said activities is non-existent with the exception of achievement hunters who are there just to grind through it.

tl;dr: Yes, the balance is in the cr4pper, but nobody really cares, including most of the players who play the activities.
