Is it illegal? A lot of people do this to open stacks of champion bags or to chow down stacks of luck essences without breaking their mouse clicker buttons or developing carpal tunnel syndrome. Some people claim it’s something you can be banned over. Which is it?

I’m not interested in peanut gallery speculation so red response would be nice to hear the official word, unless this has been answered in the past with a red response, link to that.

It is not bannable since 1 click on the scroll wheel is equal to 1 click on the mouse button thus it doesn’t break the rule of 1 action per button press rule. Mousewheel just allows you to click at a much higher rate.

If 1 tick of the scroll wheel = 1 left click, then you should be fine.

1 click = 1 action is the rule to go by.

Edit:

So in your case, it would be 2 ticks of the scroll wheel to consume one essence of luck, open bags, etc. You would have to be there scrolling the wheel over the proper item to do it.

People have been using click macros and the scroll wheel trick since day 1 without any problems. If you’re not botting, exploiting or cheating, it really doesn’t matter.

Officially, the macro policy is 1 key press = 1 action. Each scroll tick is technically 1 key press, so there shouldn’t be any problem.

Officially, a short while ago they okayed the use of complex macros to automatically play instruments, stating that if it’s not an unfair advantage, they’re not going to ban over it. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/audio/Sad-truth-of-playing-the-ingame-instruments/first#post4546267

Can you get banned over it? ArenaNet has the right to ban you for any reason at any time regardless of what you’ve done, so saying you could be banned isn’t exactly wrong.

Scroll wheel only clicks because of a PHYSICAL MECHANISM inside the mouse itself, the mouse I use(Logitech G9x) there is a button on the underside that you press and the scroll wheel will LITERALLY SPIN for almost a minute if you spin it with gusto. -LOL

Now what about a macro to repeat left click as long as a button is held down? Does that still count as 1 button 1 action, it’s just repeating that action as long as the button is held down?

It’s funny their stance on macros then they do releases like the keyboard they did with SteelSeries… that has heavy macro’ing capabilities.

RNG is a bell curve. Better hope you’re on the right side.

That is not allowed since pressing 1 button causes several actions, in this case several mouse clicks until you let go of that button. Not saying that they will come and ban you for doing something like this but use it at your own discretion.

That is completely allowed since you only perform that one skill by pressing those mouse buttons.

It would be nice to ask anet if this is literally their intention. situationally, both of those situations are the same: the user has to sit there the entire time, and they can’t do anything else at the same time. The heart of their ‘1 click = 1 action’ statement was so you couldn’t press ‘1’ and it would use both attack #1 and #2. I would be surprised if they cared how you set it up to be able to do fast clicks to open bags while being unable to do anything else at the same time. But until they say otherwise, this sort of hair-splitting speculation will be necessary.

Like I said initially, I’m going to let a redpost or a link to a redpost decide on that matter. Peanut gallery speculation isn’t of much value.

Then why not just send a message to support directly and ask them? Forums are meant for open discussion and that’s what you got here.

Because a redpost here is something that can be used for future reference, I can link someone to it, like someone did previously to show that Anet is okay with using macros to play musical instruments in towns.

If they tell someone in a PM that they can’t link to the public we don’t have that clarification.to use.
