Just want to mention that the new steel series keyboard that they promote allows for macros.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/new-the-steelseries-guildwars2-gaming-keyboard/

So.. I wonder, are macros REALLY not allowed? When they promote a keyboard with macros? I realize that they say it’s ok as long as it’s 1 key, 1 function… but that keyboard just seems silly if that’s what it’s going to be used for.

Under that definition, I couldn’t create a macro to /point and /laugh… I don’t use or advocate the use of macros because of their stance on them, but at times it does seem a touch bit ridiculous :-/

the real question is, what do you need the macros for?

Id love some kind of in-game macro system support, but it has to have it’s limitations. For example, in City of Heroes you were able to macro a text field to occur when you used an assigned skill, so every time you used the skill your character would say what you want it to. This would be a nice feature.

If you just want to cut out key strokes in your gameplay… this is where the area gets more fuzzy.

The problem is there’s a very fine line between macros and botting. If Anet tried to establish rules on what degree of automation is ok and what you can/can’t use macros for, how much they can do etc. it would be very confusing and their support team would waste a lot of time answering questions about it from players. For that matter players would waste a lot of time asking questions and trying to understand what they could get away with without being banned.

So they went for the hardline instead and said any new keybindings or macros have to be 1:1.

Personally I don’t understand why the new keyboard confuses things. It’s very obvious the description on the GW2 website is copied from the companies own site and the one on there was put together from standard paragraphs they use for all their keyboards. It’s not in any way an announcement that macros are now allowed, it’s just marketing spiel from a loosely affiliated company who have permission to put GW2 stickers on their products.

I don’t personally find it confusing, just a bit frustrating that they would sponsor a keyboard with this capability given their stance on the matter.

I understand why they did it, but at the same time I think they could have written up a few more exceptions, specifically for emotes, as it doesn’t really hurt anyone. Granted, I’m sure people do this already and it’s enforced very loosely, but having that exception in there for emotes specifically would be nice.

GW2 DOES HAVE an in game macro system, although pretty useless as a REAL macro since it is still a one skill/ability per one keypress more akin to a simple keybind setup.

I have a question and would appreciate some clarification.

1. If I map dodging into one button, that’s technically one button = one ability. Is that allowed?

2a. If I want to notify Party every time I want to cast a certain buff (for example). Is one button = “say string of text” + one ability OK?

2b. If 2a above is not OK, is separating that into two buttons OK?

Thanks!

1.) yes you can map dodge to a separate key. Double tap to dodge is actually a setting.
2,3.) no. Not from what I understand.

Even the skill layout is convoluted, likely to promote “skill”.

They even rearranged the Guardians Greatsword skills once because it was too easy to just hit the numbers in sequence and work up stacks of retaliation.

In essence, the current layout of weapon skills are specifically designed to be inefficient. Same with recharges and such are hidden behind weapon/attunement/kit swaps.

All likely done in some attempt at promoting this elusive “skill”, especially in the PVP e-sport field.

In essence, the game is a third person action game masking as a RPG.
