Q:
Does magic find still only count for monsters you kill? Or does it now count for any type of chests at all? If it does not, do you know why?

Only drops from monsters, and exclusively some chests from the PvP Track rewards, but it works because those chests emulate the drop of a mob.
We can’t say for sure why not, maybe because Anet wanted the chests to have a more regular drop among players instead of changing too much because of MF%.
good info here on how it works

1 year or more old reply.
There was even magic find gear back then.
Now it’s all changed into account magic find and thus anything could have changed… And should have
EDIT: The sources on the wiki are also 1 year old or more.
While everything above is ok…
I got colossus from one of gilded strongboxes (looted from a burried chest). I thought any box has his loot table with special exotics + random blue/green/yellow.
Maybe these gilded strongboxes act like a mob?

I think everything that has a chance to have an exotic gives a chance to get a precursor. You just rolled the right numbers.
The reply and the wiki are year old but the mechanic is still the same.
Yes, anything that can give an exotic can also give a precursor, even so that you can get a precursor trowing rare items in the Mystic Forge, so congratulations on your luck
