Magic Find, utterly usefull or worthless ?
I think it’s working, just not very well. I always have huge issues getting tag credit in my MF set because I don’t pump out enough fast, front-end damage before the zerg of other farmers ethnically cleanses the area with aoe. When I do get credit (usually in those rare times when there aren’t 10,000 people at pent/shelt/plinx/wherever) I tend to get more rares with my MF set, though it feels like I also hit DRs a lot sooner so its like… am I really getting better loot or just finding my better loot faster and being forced to go on break sooner?
I dunno.. I wish there was some clarity, but as someone once told me asking Anet to explain magic find and diminishing returns is like asking Coka Cola to give out their secret recipe.
I believe it’s just a flat multiplier.
so let’s say a monster has a 5% chance to drop a green item. With 100% magic find, the monster has a 10% chance. With 200% magic find, it’s a 15% chance.
Chests are NOT affected by magic find, and it’s decided for monster when you kill it not when you loot it (they didn’t want people to have to switch armor before opening the chest or looting a corpse).
If it’s worth it or not is a matter of opinion, I guess.
I find MF useful, especially for farming.
You have to remember, MF isn’t only about rares, it affects greens (and probably blues) as well. Doing a Plinx run and having bags full of greens to vendor is a good thing.
I’ve found that my gold find on my farming gear/food to be much more visible than the magic find. However, that would be expected as gold find simply multiplies every coin drop by 1.xx (where xx is your gold find). The effect of magic find, since it purely depends on RNG, is much, much harder to assess, but even with a very large sample size, I am definitely not getting 100%+ more magic items than my magic find suggests that I should be getting over my 0% magic find party members.
I personally find that having just enough magic find would work, but having too much might be bad. I theorize that after a certain threshold, having more than that would either being diminishing or just simply not counted.
For me, my magic number is somewhere around 40~70%. That would include a set of Runes, Omnomberry Cream (since I’m permanently under the effects of a Boon in my build), and a guild banner.
I’d have to do some tests on it, but it might interesting to look at.

At lower levels, I definitely feel like MF helps my alts.
On my 80s, I’ll admit I’m unimpressed with the difference. However, I’m even less impressed with the performance difference I see when I put on my regular non-MF gear. I can hardly tell, and in fact have found myself wearing the wrong suit without noticing for a long time. Kill speed is about the same no matter which set I wear.
So… why not wear MF?
i find being in my exotic gear and eating an omni bar is just if not more effective than being in my max magic find rare armor, rings, etc. plus food, plus 50% mf boost.
just my experience.
I tried running that bugged event that everyone is running, due to “plinx” being bugged lol. Without using any “magic find” boosters, i was walking away with about 50-60 silver total, per run. WITH “magic find” boosters (the 50% booster from chests, and a 5% guild banner), I was walking away with 70-90 silver, per run. So it’s working pretty good, I guess.
“So… why not wear MF?”
1’000 thoughness (full defense) gives your 50% damage reduction.
This makes it good for dungeons.
