I’ve never experienced “motion sickness” while playing a game, but I’m feeling a bit “off” when I use mounts. I would like to strongly suggest 3 things…

1. We need a much much farther draw distance.

2. We need the camera to be fixed in place on our characters when mounting and dismounting.

Edit- 3. As others have mentioned… I also think precise, not delayed or overdrawn, movements will help.

UPDATE- I’m still having a negative experience even with lowering the Motion Blur (as recommended). It’s really uncomfortable for me and I’ve never been sensitive to these types of things.

Hello, Anet.
As the title says i experience severe motion sickness every time i use my mount. There are two problems with your action camera (for ppl like me):

1. Inertia. Camera keeps moving when i stop my mount. That’s one of the best ways to trigger MS symptoms.
2. Positioning. The action cam rapidly changes my toon’s default position (which is in the lower third of the display for reasons: i should see as little BEHIND my characters when they’re moving as possible to avoid risks of feeling nauseous, because of how fast objects and textures in that particular area usually glimpse), which is not good for me (and other ppl with MS) at all. I attached a picture below (keep in mind that adjusting Vertical Position Far has no effect when you’re mounted). So actually here are two problems in one action.

Dear Anet, the game was literally unplayable (i mean it!) for me for a very long time (after i bought it in 2012) until you implemented a FoV slider.
Please, do something about it if you can.

Thank you.
Sry for my English.

Edit: i’m not talking about the standard Action Camera option (it’s disabled in my client), i just assume my problem’s caused by some action cam effects. I’m sorry if i call smth by a wrong name.

P. S. Here are two pictures with my char’s standard position vs that when mounted:

I had zero problems with the raptor, thankfully, but there are places and JPs in this game that make me want to hurl in five seconds flat because of the yanky camera, so you have my sympathy. Motion sickness bites big time.

And i’ve got real problems with it, not just ‘a bit off’, unfortunately. Here’s my topic:

Hello,

I merged this thread to make it stand out a little better and to focus attention on this situation so that if others also are experiencing such issues, they can join in.

I’m sorry that you’re having this issue. I wonder, have you tried lowering your Visual Blur setting? That is a specific recommendation from the team, and they feel it may help with this problem.

We’d love to hear from you if this adjustment is effective. Team members who have worked/are working on the mounts will be tracking this feedback!

I was experiencing a bit of light headedness after playing a bit with mounts, but hadn’t noticed it too badly until a few moments after logging off after a significant amount of riding.

On the topic of mounts, there sure are a lot of places where the mount will just stop as if blocked by something. A pebble perhaps?

Maybe if a solution to the motion-sickness problem is implemented it could be some feature that can be turned on and off in the options, so that those who suffer from motion-sickness or other related effects can use it if they want.

I don’t suffer from motion sickness or anything related and I actually thought that the camera work with the mounts was cool since it feels like I am actually riding on a living animal.

But for those who suffer from motion sickness this is of course awful and a solution that can be turned on at wish would be awesome for those affected.

Well not entirely sure about the motion sickness part, it could be for some players… but I had few issues with mounts. Maybe it’s intentional maybe not, but first off Strafing doesn’t work while on the mount when standing still. Look Behind hotkey doesn’t work while mounted, and first person mode doesn’t work while mounted either.

I’m someone that gets motion sickness incredibly easily from screen motion. And the raptor was no problem for me. I use the settings below. They keep me well zoomed out with a wide field of view. I also happen to have my Motion Blur (bottom of the Graphics Settings tab) fairly low, near the start of the first bit of thick white line.

Try those settings, those who are getting queasy. It means characters are tiny so you may miss out on clothing and face details on others nearby, but it’s so nice not to puke!

My frame rate hovers around 60 (where it is set), and lowest it just went was like 45 after leaping forward a few times and moving around. No crazy spikes for me. Ping was normal too, nothing crazy there either.

I wasn’t getting dizzy but rather a bit of a headache from it. Playing in HoT initially gave me a headache while playing but that eventually went away after my brain adjusted to the amount of visual info in frame. I’m not sure what it is about this demo. I’ll play with my settings later.

A lot of you won’t find this useful, but awhile back there was a game (forget which one) which gave me motion sickness. I kid you not, dramamine for a few times playing while the brain adjusts and then I was fine after that. It may be worth a try. I know, it sounds wrong medicating for a game, but it did work.

Reporting I’m usually the first to fall to motion sickness and I was fine. I generally go full zoom and have a wide FoV. I was playing an asura today so that may have also lessened any negative effects. I will need to test it on a Charr to see if it gets me. If I can stand to look at a Charr on a raptor no bigger than the character too is.

I will also say town was worse, to where I didn’t bounce around in the mount like I did out in the open.

I’m not getting motion sickness from moving, but the stop animation gets bad in some situations. With the lack of strafing it takes a lot of fiddly movements to get into a particular position, and each time you do the raptor does this rocking motion (a smaller version of the stop skid). I just did the raptor race and everyone inching forward to get to the front of the line… rock rock rock rock rock.

Be really nice if that animation could be limited to after you’ve been moving for a couple seconds or something, and a tiny tap forward would just be a step. When the raptor turns and stops it doesn’t rock, but the tiniest forward motion and it’s suddenly swaying like a ship.

I have a problem with “motion sickness” when using mount.

the issue is that when I try to turn, the whole screen try to turn too much. Doesn’t happen when unmount.

I saw someone say in a comment above that using the mouse to move is much better.
I disagree. Tried that and it is worst.

The number one pro mount argument was if you don’t like mounts don’t use them. Well it appears mounts are required to explore the new maps, do the story and so forth even if you don’t like them or they make you sick. Like Just a Flesh Wound has in their signature, “Be careful what you ask for ANet may give it to you..” That signature has become so amazingly true. LOL

I’m really disappointed by the lack of gliding support with updrafts, ley-lines, etc. There isn’t any reason they couldn’t have included them in the game to give players two paths to the same goal. To me gliding has been the most fun part of the game since HoT came out.

You mean Anet allowing you to play as you want instead of forcing you to use the new Masteries? LOL!

One of the first things to keep in mind is that motion sickness/simulation sickness is not caused by the same problem for everyone. I’ve suffered travel sickness from when I was a child, but only in car and bus travel, I never had air sickness or sea sickness.

While I am more comfortable playing games from a 3rd person view, I’ve played many FPS games without issues – however every now and then I will pick up a game that is essentially barf city for me. The Witness was one such game. I could not play for more than 20 mins without becoming ill, and then one update (that they later reverted due a reported increase in player suffering) that time became 5 mins. The recent game Yonder I also had issues with before switching to a game pad and even then I need to play in limited sessions. I’ve always put it down to how the camera floats in certain games, and it tends to be worse for me in games intended for consoles that have had kb+m controls tacked on.

I’ve done a number of raptor races so far an no sign of illness at all. For those that suffer maybe it would help for the devs to know what games have triggered the illness before in order to help nail down the issue.

I became a migraine-like headache very quickly about 15-30 minutes after start using the raptor. I had to stop playing.

After seeing this thread, I tried to figure out, what exactly is causing it. I think, it is something like this:

1. The raptor has the problem that it isn’t possible to strafe left or right. It can only go forward. I press right or left, but the raptor doesn’t move to the right or to the left. I press and press, and this thing doesn’t move where I expect it should move. It feels very sluggish this way and not doing what my hands tell the game. Running on feet is not the same keyboard+mouse flow than running with the raptor.

2. Worse: it isn’t possible to instantly change direction and turn around. The raptor runs in a circle. It turns at some minimal turn radius. But my brain wants to turn the same way as with my ordinary charater. I move the mouse, move move move (my hand and my brain cramps in that moment), but it isn’t moving enough. I cannot help it. I push the mouse over the edge of the mouse pad, but it isn’t moving as I want/my brain expect it. Changing the direction during running isn’t instant as well.

In general: the raptor performs a soft animation to enter a new direction with a small delay. This makes the movement feel very very sluggish and not connected to the mouse movement. Instant migraine. Absolutely bad. We had this delay for every camera rotation at game release: bad. It’s a pity, because the raptor has a so beautiful and graceful movement with this, but what can I say?

3. The third one is mounting the mount. The sudden upwards, slightly backwards leap. This isn’t good to my brain. It’s not as bad as the points above, but it adds up.

My brain must absolutely control the direction of any camera rotation and running direction. The camera must rotate with a certain velocity and move into the direction my brain expects where it would move. I tuned the rotation speed option very careful.

I press the right mouse button and move the mouse to rotate the camera. I configured A and D to strafe left and strafe right. Rotating with the keyboard makes me feel bad, because this feels like a sudden uncontrolled rotation. My brain only tolerates rotating with right mouse button+mouse move. Using strafe left/right doesn’t rotate, so it’s my choice of going a bit to the right or to the left.

The tuning of the rotation speed is very important. Too slow or to fast makes me get migraine. It is connected with the movement. While running and rotating the camera, the change in the running direction must correspond to what my brain expects. If it doesn’t, I get migraine. To adjust the direction change, I often and automatically use a small bit of strafe left or strafe right to correct the position, so the overall rotation angle is correct.

I tried setting motion blur to minimum, but it felt not better. It made no difference at all, neither maximum nor minimum.

I played with an Asura.
Gliding never caused any problem.

The raptor made me the same migraine feeling I got at game release, where it was caused by:

  • jumpiness of the camera [very bad] (got better with “disable camera shake” and “collision sensivity”)
  • mouse movement sluggish [very bad] (got better with better PC, but also with some game updates)
  • camera rotation lagged behind mouse [very very bad: almost instant migraine] (got better with the update that reduced the camera rotation delay)
  • camera rotation too fast/slow (adjusted camera corresponding camera setting)
  • low frame rate (tuned fps to 50-60 with new computer)
  • too narrow field of vision [bad] (got better with the update to manually tune fov)

After all that tuning and all the updates, the game ran perfectly. No migraine any more.

The raptor brings it all back. It’s a worse feeling than at game release.

It’s really difficult to explain what thing in the game is causing migraine/headache. If you developers try to work on this problem, I would be happy to test everything you try and dedicate time for giving feedback, because if the behavior stays this way, it would prevent me from playing, essentially force me to abandon the game.

The strange thing is, I played Guild Wars 1, and Guild Wars 1 had a very strong camera rotation delay, and your character was way more often immobilized due to the game mechanic. But I never felt any motion sickness or migraine with Guild Wars 1. Not the slightest.

Silmar, for what it’s worth I fixed the sluggish camera issue the game had at launch by turning up my dpi on my mouse. I tend to find games with mouse sensitivity settings that the settings respond oddly to what you expect, so I just manage it on my mouse software.

I don’t suffer from Motion Sickness, though the raptor’s movement left and right did trigger some dizziness. The sudden animation in popping the toon in the air does give some measure of headache. A full view that isn’t so focused on the raptor did help a bit.

Lady Lozza, yes, mouse dpi is very important, but I mentioned its impact in my post. Mouse dpi directly affects rotation speed, and rotation speed is what you can configure in GW2. I already adjusted that according to my needs.

I assume, the core problem (for me) is the delay between moving the mouse and the visual reaction of the game to this movement. The delay, not the intensity. The intensity is not unimportant, though, it must be consistent throughout the game. It must be the same when my character is running on his feet or riding on the raptor.

I often get motion sickness when playing video games so I avoid the areas within GW2 that can trigger that. I do JP’s only when “forced” by circumstances and even then I can often coerce my husband to do them for me. (Steak dinner works every time)

So when I got on the raptor today, I did so with much trepidation. And, it turns out I had good reason. It was a horrible experience. I have taken anti-nausea pills throughout the day because, dog gone it, I want to play this darned thing!

The problem for me seems to be how the rapter changes directions. I can go in fairly straight lines out in the open landscape and feel comfortable but as soon as I change directions, everything starts to tilt and my stomach roils.

I already have my Motion Blur at its lowest setting. I don’t know what else to do. It really saddens me to think that these mounts are going to be necessary to access certain places/areas.

Gaile, thanks for merging the threads so it can be seen by more people. And, hopefully, something can be done.

I experience this issue when the FoV is set too low. I know it’s unlikely that this is the issue for you, but it’s worth looking into. Also making sure you have proper lights, points of reference on/outside of your screen (to resolve the disconnect between your brain and vision), and last but not least, if the densely populated area was slaughtering your fps, especially when bounding about on a raptor mount, there’s a good chance that it may contribute to the feelings of motion sickness.

As someone who usually has issues with motion sickness, I was a bit surprised at how well I did. I stopped playing LoTRO due to motion issues with mounts. That being said, there ARE some things that just make me a bit queasy.

The stopping/starting is MS triggering. I get that it is a big lizard, and perhaps not easy to stop or stop, but this is a fantasy game. The mount should stop just as easily as our characters. If we really were riding a mount, our bodies would get input from the way the animal moves, and we’d anticipate the motions. We don’t have that input, and designing the mounts to mimic those motions in the game without our being able to anticipate it ends up being jarring for the senses. The stopping issue also makes the attack skill really hit-or-miss.

It doesn’t change direction with the camera, like our characters do, so the mount is often moving in a different direction than you expect. I suppose this is true of real life mounts, you need to point their head the right direction, but it is something that causes frustration. Perhaps we’ll get used to it.

They don’t strafe, so there is a lot of fussy jiggling around trying to get them lined up, etc. All that twerking is just more motion for those of us with motion sensitivities. Perhaps we’ll get better at piloting them, but the lack of a strafe action really surprises me.

I strongly disagree. I really like that the mount reacts a bit delayed. After all, you dont control the mount directly, you control your char wich is riding the mount. I think it feels really organic this way. You cant just do an instant 180, the raptor has to run a small half-circle instead and im very glad about it.

In most other MMOs mounts feel just like a thing wich gives your char a speedboost and has a cool skin, but here it feels like your char is riding a real animal.

Further input, perhaps the mounts could slide less to the side when stopping. As I’ve ridden around more, I think it’s more that swing to the side that gives me issues rather than the actual slowing down.

Something others that are having issues might think about, what about the start and stop with the “weighted” momentum gives you a problem (or really, any of the mount animations). Perhaps the animations could be fine tuned enough to preserve the feeling of a large mount’s momentum, without so much of an MS trigger.

Edited to add: those that are having issues with the stopping, stop by tapping your “Back” key (generally S), or tapping back quickly as you release the mouse buttons if you are using those. It straightens out the stop and makes it shorter. This is why I was thinking the sliding action may be what is causing a lot of folks problems. After starting to use this, I’m having much less of an issue.

Another quick think I’ve noticed: when you zoom in while on a mount, the camera suddenly swings up and gives an almost top-down view. I’m not sure if this is something being caused by my camera position sliders, but I like where they’re at when I’m not mounted, so I’d rather not have to move them for when I am. But currently every time I try to zoom in to look at something, that sudden camera swing makes my stomach do a flip. Can we maybe get some mounted position sliders for the camera?

That’s not going to help. I know because I have experienced this type of thing constantly in other games I’ve played. It’s the way the mount moves and the camera that is causing the problem. If the mount moved exactly like a player character people wouldn’t be having this issue. I also have my camera out as far as it can go. If I could zoom out even further maybe that would help, but the game doesn’t allow this.

I experienced this problem as well during my time testing the mount. What I always do is take dramamine. If you don’t have dramamine on hand then try popping a benadryl. That has an ingredient that is very similar to dramamine and helps with motion sickness. You might have to keep doing this for several days. Hopefully, your body will adjust and you will stop needing the medicine.

To fix the problem would require Anet to completely change the way the mount moves and I’m not sure they are going to be willing to do that at this stage in the game. It’s just something we must deal with since most people probably do not experience this issue. Try the dramamine/benadryl in the meantime. It does help. Oh and you can try motion sickness wrist bands. I’ve never tried those before, but I would think it should work, at least theoretically.

I get that people might prefer the realistic movement and not want the instant 180, but the raptor should be able to strafe. It feels unnatural that it’s just completely unable to do this.

I completely agree with Jojo. The mounts truly feel natural and living as they are and mounted movement feels perfect and and very enjoyable in my experience. I’ve never had any issues with motion sickness in games. The worst thing ANet could do is make the mounts turn instantly like when walking with action camera enabled and that would be absolutely horrible to look at. I hope they keep it as it is, or at least fine tune it very slightly. Wouldn’t mind some mounted camera sliders in the options menu though. Also, it is important to emphasize that any changes made to the camera/movement of the mount should be made an option for players to freely turn on/off at will. Not all players should be forced to use the settings meant for players with motion sickness and vice versa.

We need an ‘non-bouncing’ option for those of us with inner ear problems. We didn’t choose our ears, but they rule how motion affects us

ALSO Sliding to a stop may be ‘cute’ but it really knocks the heck of out one’s equilibrium!

Agree with other people here, the mount movement, reaction feels realy natural and i like it. Please not another old generic mount system which is nothing more than a gimmick with unrealistic motion. Turning of camera shake, playing with the visual sliders and some other options make a great difference.

More than a few people in this topic have mentioned the lack of strafe. I don’t use strafe myself much as excessive use of strafe can make me ill.

Motion sickness is after all caused by our senses and brain telling us conflicting information about the environment.

Oh dear, I dont have POF yet but i get severe motion sickness in games. I cant even touch VR style things. It will be a huge shame if I cant play GW2 anymore because of it.

It would be really sad to see this organic and realistic expirience gone, because of a few People with motion sickness. That said, there should be an option for the ones with MS, so they can enjoy the game too. For me even imagening the raptor moving like it does and then coming to an instant stop just makes me a bit nauseous. That wouldn’t be the solution. There should be sliders or options for those affacted, but please don’t break the mounts. It truly felt wonderful.

Lolina, the difficulty with motion sickness or simulation sickness is that the causes and effects are different on all those who suffer from it. Someone who typically wouldn’t have an issue at all can have one, and those who frequently suffer (myself for example) might be fine. Because of this the solution may also not be the same for all sufferers.

FEW PEOPLE?
People are giving feedback about it left and right, and you are saying “FEW”?

It’s a big issue. Even some say they are feeling slight dizzy but no motion sickness.

Are you trying to downplay it? The whole point of this preview weekend it to let people try it out and also see what other bugs and problems before the actual launch.

I wouldnt want them to change something that looks and feels good for most people in game too. But I think its more a priority to have a game that doesn’t make its players sick and cause migraines to having something visually appealing. Im sure there is some compromise and I ofc agree with you that sliders are the best option if possible.
