Make "Common" skins cost no charges
In reality nothing has changed when it comes to skinning your armor. Most the time you didnt use the transmutation stones because the skin you wanted was a level 80 skin or the armor you wanted was a level 80 armor both of which wouldn’t work with the transmutation stones. So you saved them up or got some crystals and waited till 80 anyway.
There are still a few free charge skins, the skins you get from your achievements are a free charge skin
It would be nice if those guild skins were too, it’s pretty plain looking…
I don’t know, just seems pointless to skin anything but a lvl 80 exotic armor for your build of choice, who’s going to spend charges on masterworks with minor runes?

You’re right that in essence not much has changed about the transmutions. But to be fair, if you got a bunch of stones from story quests/completion you’d really have no reason not to use them on low level character because it’s not like you can use them on lvl 80 gear anyway. And there are a lot of lower level versions of nicer looking gear that you could use, also.
But I think the main gripe (for me) is that it’s supposed to be this big new feature that makes customizing your look a lot easier, yet it’s still not that accessible for people that can’t/don’t want to spend real money on it and it’s also kind of less viable to use on lower level alts than it was when there were transmute stones that you could only use before you were leveled up anyway.

You are right from your point of view too.
But say back then prior to this patch if we are able to convert 3 stones into 1 crystals via mystic forge or whatever means (which many people suggested before this feature was introduced), most of us will not use the stones. We will save it for crystal conversion and bear with the short-term plain look.
Simply because the only way to get crystals was to spend cash which many people aren’t willing to.
Stones had never been an issue for people since exploration/dailies reward you stones.
But crystals, the one needed to transmute a lvl 80 gear, was the issue because it is harder to get without spending cash.
Granted the use of stones could’ve been retained (I do wish too), but the feature to convert them into crystals (now known as charge which is a currency rather than an inventory hogging item) is most welcomed.
Now wvw offer one-time applicable common weapon skins at the cost of as little as 7 badges. It will be great if this happens to armor as well.
Before the update, the 80 or so transmutation stones meant that I could easily maintain my low level characters’ appearance. But since I am down to 45 charges now, I am reluctant to spend them on my alts. I mean, I have a level 34, a level 42 and a level 62 character. I would probably need a lot of charges to avoid looking like humpty dumpty while leveling these characters, especially since the change in traits means it’s more important to have up to date gear while leveling up.
Sure, it’s more convenient if you have only level 80 characters since you don’t need to spend cash on transmutation crystals anymore.
I’ll have to play a bit and see how easy/difficult is to get the charges.

Oh so presumptuous.
Silly ME
Conjurer armor, Acolyte armor , shadow armor, Stately armor, must be lvl 80 armors.
God forbid I want to look good whilst leveling up oh wait I hit lvl 80 in 2hours. Lightning fast!

You still get charges the same way you used to. When zone completing you get 1 charge and when doing story and other you still have a chance to get a random one charge like we used to get. The plus sides to this for me is I used to be able to be crazy with changes to my characters from 1-79 because I had tons of low level crystals but then at high level I had to basically pick carefully and them never change it due to not getting many. The change allows me a way to know I can get a guaranteed charge for any level and instead of going crazy work at my look while leveling but having to make choices and by the time I hit 80 already having a look I love. Before I would do that probably more careless than I needed and would hope by the end I had enough high level charges to actually get the look I wanted since the others were useless then.
i think the biggest thing stopping me from appreciating this game is the transmutation charges. i can understand and support all the cash shop purchases except these – it’s just so greedy. i’ve bought extra character slots, the odd weapon skin and armour, dyes and harvesting tools – never have i regretted buying those. but transmutation charges is such a letdown.
for all it’s faults diablo 3 has transmog done right – it’s easily done with a minimal in-game fee. why anet feel the need to charge players for such a small function is beyond me.
i haven’t really sank any meaningful time in this game in almost a year. i came back to see the new patch delights and i’m just really disappointed. i was hoping to get sucked back in but already i’m put off.

Yes, I did acknowledge it’s more convenient for level 80 characters. But before the update I would get 3 transmutation stones from completing a map, which meant I could change 3 armour pieces. Now I would only get one, therefore only one change.
I have yet to do some sPvP to see how you get charges through that, so I can’t comment on that yet. So that leaves me with dailies and map completion to get charges (aside from using gems, of course). I don’t recall story missions awarding transmutation stones and I never got any stone or crystal from dailies, so I am not exactly thrilled with the change in transmuting items.
I think at the very least the armor skins that you can actually craft yourself should be free of charge to transmute. Would make sense from where im standing.
