Make character names unique to the server?
Sounds like a lot of extra work for practically no gain.
It’s really difficult to come up with names for new characters or change the name on an existing one.
I recently changed the name on one of my characters but the name was already taken so I had to settle with an accent on one the letters. Sadly this was a huge mistake as it makes it harder for other people to whisper me and use the squadjoin command. Thankfully I got help from the Anet support to change my name again.
As a lot of names are already taken even with addition of surnames etc. added to the name the chances are that is is already taken and you have to settle with a name you don’t enjoy and hard to remember etc.
My suggestion is to make names unique to each server. But hold it right there, Aren’t the game now using this mega-server system? Yes but what if you whispered, squadjoin or add a friend you will at first add the players on your home server. If you wish to add someone on another server with the same name you have to add the Server name before the character name. Like for example Server Name Character Name. Also if there would be another character with the same name there could be a drop-down list with the server name(s) before the character name.
This way it’s possible to release more names for people without removing names from inactive account even if I would prefer 3+ years inactive account should have their names released for others to use.

Valid point but I hope your imagination goes past that.

You’re implying wvwers should yet again be shafted by forcing them to change name if they want to transfer servers (which they are currently being forced to do due to almost the entire bronze and silver tiers being deserted), at least youre on the same page as anet.

That is an entire different issue. Players shouldn’t have to switch server to enjoy WvW.
It has been discussed many times, in many other threads – it’s not going to happen and nor should it.
I recently created a FTP account and had no difficulty coming up with a single word appropriate ‘irish’ name for a sylvari and a ‘fantasy’ first name and surname for a human.
Sorry but if you want to be Gandalf, Aragorn or any other popular name, you’re out of luck.

Nah other threads have been about taking from inactive accounts. The whole point of threads like this is to release more names so people have more options.

You tell others to be more imaginative but can’t come up with untaken names? How very ironic.

Ironic since your imagination is lacking when it comes to thinking up new names, that is the bottom line here, you have the ability to make an infinite amount of different names and yet you want to make them tied to server because you cant spend 10-20 minutes to think up something good/unique. My suggestion is you spend some time doing just that, maybe you will even get good at it.
I could see an argument for making names unique to North America or Europe, if they’re not already, but individual servers is going too far.
I could easily make a free account on another server, grab someone else’s name, then cause all sorts of trouble.
I’ve created 3 new characters in the last 2 weeks, a norn, sylvari and an asura, all with lore appropriate names (which means the last 2 have single word names). In all 3 cases I got my first choice.
I make new characters on a regular basis and the only times its been a problem for me I’ve been making a temporary character and copying a name from somewhere else because I couldn’t be bothered thinking one up.
Yes more names are taken than at launch, but there are literally millions of possibilities so it’s not hard to find something suitable.

You mean: The whole idea of this thread is to give you the chance to express your idea of making names sever unique because no one could possibly have ever had the idea before you and even if they did you didn’t want your version of it to get lost in the myriad of other threads about the same thing and thus completely ignored.
Sorry, no.

Except servers are not independent from each other. Thus the whole point of this thread was a dead horse before you even pressed submit.

They could drop unique character names altogether and let you have whatever you wanted. The display name could simply be used for everything instead.
If you’re having problems finding a name even with a surname, you need to stop copying existing characters or using the most common of names and make one up yourself.

I have no trouble imagining names the trouble is that they are already taken. I make all my characters with first and surnames usually with a meaning behind them. But now when there is probably over 10 million characters on the servers even face rolling the keyboard will tell you the name is already taken. I’m glad if you or anyone else here are happy with the current system but I’m not and just wrote here to make my point.

This is probably the best solution but from Anets perspective it would mean no more name change contract sales. In my suggestion veteran players such as myself would need to buy those things to change the names of characters.
The problem is, for PvE maps there aren’t distinct servers and people can move from one to another. If someone wants to move to another server, is the game going to have to look through a list of all the names there before it allows a transfer? Will it give a free name change or require a gemstore purchase before you can transfer if a duplicate name is found?
Your suggestion puts more layers of complexity in game for very little to no advantage at a time when they are obviously struggling to do the projects they already have in front of them.
ANet may give it to you.
What servers? Is this suddenly 2013?

So if they did this, with mega servers you could end up running into a group of people with the same name, how would whisper’s work? You’d end up whispering 5-10 people. Can’t say you thought this out very well.

If I stop playing Gw2 for a couple months, I don’t want someone being allowed my names that I have had.
If I’m on a mega server, I don’t want someone else with my name talking in map chat. That will be super confusing and if they are a troll, it will cause me way too many issues.
So, I’m completely happy with the current system.
Was that enough detail for you? I realize you personally (to the OP) told some people their opinions were invalid since they weren’t giving enough details. Does mine count?
On the other hand, this could be our chance to name a char Legolas, Aragorn or Gandalf. With a bit of luck, we could get in a guild with as many Legolas, Gandalfs, Aragorns and Gimlis as there are servers.
That should make things interesting.
ANet may give it to you.

I think that’s an individual issue, due to personal requirements about what constitutes an “acceptable” or “good name”. I have a long list of potential names handy for characters I probably will never create, so I can’t agree that it’s “difficult”.
…I had to settle with an accent on one the letters. Sadly this was a huge mistake as it makes it harder for other people to whisper me and use the squadjoin command.
There’s an existing solution: people can use the /invite /squadjoin and /w commands for any character on your account; it doesn’t have to be the one you are on right now. I recommend everyone have at least one easy-to-type name just for this reason.

You don’t have to settle.

That’s extra work for every player in the game and for ANet to design & implement. All in order to …make it easier on the small fraction of the community that has chosen to limit their options for names.
If you are having trouble coming up with a name, ask for help — the internet has a bunch of RPG name-creation tools. There are entire lists of Welsh, Irish, Scots names that a great for sylvari, all sorts of ways to add an extra consonant or prefix to asura-sounding words, lists of Scandanvian names for Norn, and the possibilities for Charr are seemingly endless.
In other words, this is an expensive and complicated solution to a problem that needn’t exist.
This game has one of the best naming rules of most of the MMOs.
Let’s say you wanna name your character to Lars but the name is taken, then it is very easy to name the character to Lars A, is that taken well go with Lars B and so on. I myself are always going for a sir name and a last name like Lars Fjollbonde and if that name is taken I try with Lars Von Fjollbonde as an example.
People always have problems inviting me to squads but it has never been impossible and no one has ever complained.

But then what happens if someone transfers servers?
Just add a last name. That’s what I do, it’s not common to have both the first and last name taken and if it is just use a different one.
As many have said, this idea would end up with mass confusion, almost everything is mega server based now. so whispering by server name seems silly. I’m actually happy with the system the way it is now, and haven’t really had much trouble coming up with names. Yes popular names like Legolas, Cloud, Serah Farron, Sephiroth, (insert other popular media reference here) are taken, but that’s pretty normal for almost any MMO.
The only way I could see this making duplicate character names passable is if your account name were tagged onto your name (which I’m sure people would hate) for instance /whisper Charactername@accountname.numbers message
This way it’s possible to release more names for people without removing names from inactive account even if I would prefer 3+ years inactive account should have their names released for others to use.
100% hate this idea do not take names that players have away. (It’s also an extremely short sighted fix) most of the names people posting threads like this are trying to get are taken, and will be retaken seconds after opened.
As I’ve said in similar threads before, I don’t want someone from another server copying one of my character’s names, and spouting out verbal abuse to other people. And I don’t think , many other people want that either.
There are literally billions of combinations of names people can choose from. Usually, the people who want to have shared names are those who choose to mix names from other franchises, like wanting to call their character Ezio Lannister or Dante Naruto etc. instead of coming up with something original.
Yet about a month before HoT came out, I managed to pick easily a lore-friendly Asura name called Spekka. Didn’t need to call her Krewemaster Spekka, just Spekka. So I reserved the name and made her a revenant! There are still names out there, just a little imagination is all that’s needed.
it would be cool to have some options for names that are already taken, but im sure a ton of bugs would pop up over this. on top of that you have people /w a paragraph and that would get on peoples nerves.
You know you can transfer servers in this game right..
Valid point but I hope your imagination goes past that.
Why criticize his imagination when you have none? I have 14 characters and never once had a conflict. Maybe you shouldn’t name your guys after pop culture references.
Not to mention, how would Anet sort out support complaints when someone snaps a screenshot of a name to report? I wouldn’t want an infraction for something someone with my same character name did. Nor would I want the hassle of proving my innocence.
Yup, way more trouble than it’s worth.
coming up with good mmorpg names is really simple in GW2 since character names can be really long and you can put spaces in the name, i really like this about GW2
