How exactly is this done?

Do you just salvage all your gear and sell the mats, or do you put your greens/rare in the mystic forge in hopes of better gear?

What strategies have you used that have been successful?

I move all bags to a level 53 character(the mats at that level are pretty valuable).

Don’t skip Pacman, so many people do but it’s loot Galore!

I salvage the mats (see the lower level char to open bags) and make ascended mats and sell them. Usually two rounds of VW brings at least 20g. Usually I would get also an exotic or two but nothing too big. Also, chest train.

It may be useful to read the wiki first. There’s a lot of information in there and you can jump around from topic to topic as you need. Then if something’s not clear, this forum can help explain it.

There are several time gated Materials you need for ascended gear. They are Bolt of Damask, Deldrimor Steel, Elonian Leather and Spritwood Plank.

They each have a component that you can only craft once per day which keeps supply limited and the item profitable to craft sell.

You can make great money doing this especially if you are farming out as many of the mats as possible (opening bags on a L53 character gives you the most expensive mats in this process)
