I’ve noticed a lot of complaints about people lacking money and not really knowing how to make it while leveling. This guide is mainly for people that are leveling up and fresh to the game, not so much for 80’s, but some things do apply

I’m being very crude here, but I mean no disrespect to you or anyone else having the same issue. These are the things I’ve learned. Here are some of my tips to getting and keeping money.

#1. Suck less, die less.
The less you die the less you have to repair. (I agree that the repair cost is extremely high at max level it seems.) Spend more time learning your character, how to avoid deaths, and how to kill as many things at once as you can.

#2. Know the areas.
If you’re going to begin farming, do some research on where the best places to farm are. Feel around the zone for a while, learn the types of mobs you’ll be fighting, and move your skills around to best suit those. Again, refer to rule #1.

#3. Use the Mystic Forge Sparingly
The Mystic Forge is for fun and gambling, not straight for making profit. Sell/salvage your blues. Sell/Salvage your greens, OR you can choose to put 4 of those puppies in the forge and hope for a Rare. Rares sell for 20+ silver usually, and you can always salvage them for Ectos (Used in crafting) which sell for 20 silver.

#4. SELL ALL YOUR CRAFTING MATS.
Okay, this one can go differently for different people. If crafting is your game and you love doing it, awesome! Make some cool items for you and your friends, sell the stuff you make, and have a good time doing it. Crafting is not a good way to earn money though, remember that. If you aren’t into the whole crafting thing…then refer to rule #5

#5. SELL YOUR CRAFTING MATERIALS. Seriously.
If you spend a decent amount of your leveling experience gathering materials, hitting nodes, and looting bags, you should have 5 gold EASILY of materials in your bags when you hit 80.

#6. BE CAREFUL when you sell things on the TP.
Check how much the stack sells for vendor price, and see how much its selling for on the TP. THEN CHECK THE LISTING FEE. Almost always you’ll find the lower items are selling for the exact same thing as vendor price, 5% listing fee which means you LOSE money selling it on the TP if you sell it for vendor price. There is also a 10% fee when you sell the item. Just always be careful when you’re selling stuff.

#7. Don’t do dungeons with idiots. If his name is Xxsephirothx or LegolasButtface he’s going to suck. People that suck are people that die a lot. When people die in dungeons, YOU WILL PROBABLY DIE TOO. Find a group of friends that are competent that can perform well in dungeons. Dungeons are AMAZING cash if you can get through them with a maximum of 2-3 deaths.

Hope this helps..If you have anything you’ve discovered and would like to add or feel needs to be added, PM me or let me know here.

EDIT: Updated to include some numbers and new shiny things.

I think #6 is a very, very good point. Many people forget to include the listing fee when determining if they should sell an item on the TP or to a vendor. I have noticed lately that most blue and green items have now dropped in price on the TP to the same amount that a vendor would give you, except that the listing fee is not included yet. Selling it to a vendor is faster, easier, and often makes you more money.

you’re sadly mistaken if you believe you can’t make money off of the forge.

perhaps you should learn to use it, it actually has very little to do with gambling.

Can you elaborate arcqe? I don’t know how to use it despite reading multiple articles about how to use it. It always turns into a gamble for me. I think his guide is spot on with making money.

However, I’d like him to be wrong with the mystic forge. If he’s wrong with the mystic forge, then that’s another good way to make money. Could you please explain why and how he’s wrong?

I got a celestial dye from the forge and used it on my elementalist. But yeah most of the green dyes I put in there just return other greens mostly.

I see people on this forum and have seen people in chat saying they have 1k+ gold, and there is no way they got there just by selling mats and vendoring crap.

I’d really like to know how those people are getting that much gold without cheating, exploiting, or botting.

you’re sadly mistaken if you believe you can’t make money off of the forge.

…yeah, this sometimes is involved with people talking about big money. There are reasonable recipes you can use to get a high rate of exotics or yellows and make big profits. I saw one such post here about it a ways back.

There is money to be made via crafting in this game but far less so than in most MMORPGs. Hopefully it’ll get better once the initial flood is over but so far most people are content to sell products for around TP price of mats.

So, selling mats isn’t bad advice. For now. I profit off of crafting and have more money now due to crafting than I would’ve if I just sold mats, but it’s not an easy path to money by any means.

I also save a ton of gold via crafting, which is as good as selling stuff, and not just by making stuff I or guildies need. You can make junker rares to break for ectos and either sell ectos or use them for your own exotic needs. Stuff like that.

but you will also have a 2-3 copper listing fee which means you LOSE money selling it on the TP.

Don’t forget that listing the item costs you money, but selling the item costs you an additional amount of money. Overall, just to break even, you should sell an item for at least 110% of its vendor price.

If you can read this then it is proof that ArenaNet’s moderators just, kind and fair.

This has been said over and over and over and over again, I don’t know why you made this topic. There is no true tips on how to make money, you are just telling people to do the obvious.

The TP fees are: 5% listing on sell price paid immediately to list. 10% of sell price be paid if you do sell.

It apparently isn’t obvious if they blame the game daily for their incapability to do pretty much everything on this list, instead going “Ah mai gawd, bad game design”.

Like I said at the very beginning of my post:

This is for newer players that are leveling up their first character and looking to have a good chunk of cash for when they reach 80.

@Mystic Forge Guy—Thanks for that great, helpful insight on the subject. Next time you should post reasons instead of just “You’re wrong.” and I will GLADLY take any advice, tips you offer…like I said.

@KnuckleDust—There are definitely true tips on how to make money. I listed them. They’re up there. They make you money. Some of these things may be obvious to experienced MMOers out there, but like I said…AGAIN…this is for newer players who are a little lost with what to do. But again, thank you for your wonderful insight.

With rule 3
You should allways put in your greens for a chance to get a rare you will make alot more profit if you do this method then salvageing the greens.

A rare has a chance to give you 1-3 globs of ecto which is 20s each

1. Hit orichalcum nodes
2. Sell orichalcum
3. Repeat

I’ll tell you one that you didn’t include and was my biggest bane for saving money in GW’s. Don’t spend it! Lol sounds simple but everytime I’d get a bit of cash in GW’s I’d buy a mini, a weapon for my heroes etc. etc. that I didn’t need.
