Don’t get me wrong I like Teq, and the harder world bosses, I like wvw (even though I still would like to see less zerg play), and I loved the scarlet invasions. But Anet why on earth do you keep making huge open world content that you engine handles poorly? I have a pretty good PC as do many others playing but most of us struggle to even keep 20 fps during these events. Now that there are more mechanics and things to avoid in these fights the issue it even more apparent as half the time i’m dying to waves I cant even see or even if i can things are lagging so bad there is nothing I can do. I don’t think any of us want dumbed down content but something has to give somewhere. I think its time to step up and optimize your game in a significant way or start instancing content. You sold us a game targeting mid range systems and toting innovative combat. Right now even ppl with i7 processors and $400 video cards are have decent performance at best and the combat feels more like I’m fighting the engine than the mobs.

assuming OP is running a first gen i7 or something (860 or 920 etc) this shows how ridiculously CPU dependent this game is.
oh yeah 5 fps with my C2D is lolz, especially when my GPU load barely changes.

What is also funny is in GW1 I get 120+ FPS AND is fully using my SLI cards where in GW2 my SLI cards are barely working and only 1 card has a load.

Either your connection is a piece of crap or your RAM and GPU are not optimized for your processor. My guess is you kittened your CPU when you overclocked it: GW2 puts a much heavier strain on the CPU than it does the GPU.

A refurb’d Dell tower with a 3rd gen i5, GTX640, and 8 gigs of RAM runs for about $400. If you can’t afford an upgrade to a machine that’s an entire 18month generation out of date, I’m sorry, that sucks, but you shouldn’t complain about performance.

People can make all of the excuses they want but the truth is I have a PC I can install near any current game on and play smooth as butter on ultra or high settings except GW2. That does not in any way fit with the advertised “mid range system” pitch we were given at launch when it won’t even run on systems considered fairly high end. Also the fact it so CPU intensive and barely touches the GPU just shows how messed up the engine really is. I know personally I’m not going to go buy a new PC to replace one less than a year old because 1 game is poorly designed.

Honestly I’m pretty sure you’re either:
A). Over-exaggerting the extent of your issues
B). Have some sort of overheating issue causing you to get low performance out of your CPU
C). Managed to screw up your overclock causing you to get poor performance out of your CPU
D). Have a horrifically un-optimized network connection
I run a lower tier system than this guy (i5 2.7k GHz + GTX640) and I can run on full max settings in a hard capped overflow for Teq (let alone WvW) and have ZERO lag issues (60+ FPS with occasional rubberband hiccups whem my flatmate fires up his p2p torrents).
I am currently running the following specs and get insane lag during major event’s on max setting’s.
Intel I5 2500k OC to 4.0ghz Processor
16 gigs of DDR3 Memory
256 gb Samsung 840 pro SSD Harddrive
MSI AMD HD 7870 Graphics card
all teamed up on a Z77 gigabyte motherboard.
My spec’s while not top of the line are not slouching either and will lay waste to 90% of the system’s this game is run on. I have to agree there is room lots of room to optimize the game.
My best guess as to why this and a lot of other updates are being put on hold are because of the 2 week living story updates. There has yet to be a 2 week update that does not come with multiple game breaking bugs.

The issue was never about system specs. The issue is that even with top level specs, this game still runs crappy.

A. If I was getting even 30 fps in big events I wouldn’t even have made the post
B. Possible, but Ive been playing nearly every mmo for the past 12 years with no issues like I have had with this game.
C. Not OC’D, never have with this PC
D. My network is set up by a friend who does this for a living. But I did pay him with a 12 pack so….
Either way I know I’m not alone. Its cool that it plays well for you but for me and MANY others it don’t. I like the game but it feels like a sloppy beta still in many ways including the engine. I find myself playing less just because it annoys me that what we have in this game should not require what is needed to play at a level that I as a gamer feel it should. In the long run if I do eventually stop playing I feel this will be the biggest contributing factor as there are many other games out there that are just less of a hassle.
edit for AMD Comment: I also have a new AMD 8350 4.0 GHZ 8x core with dual Gigabyte GTX 680’s and my performance is even worse than on my older i7.

and you get smooth 60fps in high density fights? I find that hard to believe…..or your system was what Anet optimized their game on.
I have a much more powerful computer than you in all areas. I play at 2560×1440 and no way can I play in high (all) settings while getting 60fps in high density fights.
I will have to test playing at 1080p to be sure though.

I dunno…. I know people who seemingly have zero issues with gw2 performance wise. Strangely enough most of them aren’t ppl with killer systems either. I do have to wonder if the game was optimized and play tested for the i5 as I see a ton of ppl with i5 processors that are having better luck than other people who even have much stronger processors. Either way there are obviously issues in my opinion or this thread and countless others would not receive these levels of debate they have if it was just a localized issue or a few ppl with very outdated pc’s.

That also depends on the player. For me 15 fps and above is “zero issues” and some other player may complain that anything under 60 fps is completely unplayable.

At medium settings I run ok, BUT, my system woiuld be considered outdated it being just a socket 775 Q9650.

I got used to play with everything set to low now.
Why?
Most importantly, because map loads a LOT faster while having your settings on low.
Fewer effects on screen so I can actually see what is going on.

I don’t believe you for one second.
Firstly, you are using a nvidia card on a 60-75Hz maximum monitor refresh. IF you are getting 80 FPS, then you are first up not using Adaptive V-Sync which is already the wrong thing to do. If you are running with vsync off and sustaining 80 FPS, then you should obviously tuen vsync on. Alternatively, if you are running in windowed mode this will instantly cut ~10-15% performance further indicating you will not sustain 60 FPS.
Next up, a couple months ago I moved from a Core i7-940 + GTX580 to a brand new Core i7-4770 + GTX780. The performance increase is just about where I expected it to be, and it still does not sustain 60 FPS in any large fight such as Tequatl.
1) Neither system auto-detects as Ultra in any setting.
2) Both systems test comparably in all other games with equal specification PC’s.
3) My new system still averages around 25 FPS on High for most of the Tequatl fight with high player numbers, with player count upped to Highest. Sure if I look at the ground/sky I get 60 FPS – this is not an indicator of performance.
If you turned post-processing and shadows off/down then obviously you aren’t running with the graphics set to high. So if you want to retain any viable belief in your systems performance, you need to submit a video preferably with FRAPS enabled and showing all detail settings used. Alternatively, keep the F11 settings window up so we can see current FPS.
Until then, in my opinion you are just trolling.

20fps in high pop zergs isn’t bad, regardless of your specs. A particular MMO which shall not be named couldn’t handle any part of its content at launch. To have 5 fps in the main city, battlegrounds or raids was a luxury. I’ve done content at lowest graphics with a single frame every 2 or 3 seconds. That’s not to mention constant disconnects, extreme lag at any part of the game (500ms ping was normal), 3000 people queues and 8 hour maintenance which didn’t fix anything. Not only was the client optimized but neither were the servers capable of running an MMO.
In comparison, I’d say GW2 does pretty well.

I wish the current team working on FF14 came for gw2, they’re doing absolutely everything possible to please their players and are already building a DX11 patch while anet doesn’t even dream about it.
What would DX11 bring to GW2? Graphics don’t make a game, gameplay does. And GW2 has the best gameplay of any MMO by a long shot.
optimization is what it brings, removes ugly ps2 quality textures almost everything in gw2 has, adds tesalletion that removes the blockyness of this game as if gw2 came out in 2003 or something. go google DX11… there’s plenty of VERY useful things it has and not a single game would be better without it.

I have intel core i5 processor and 16gm ram and I barely lag – on Teq-like population, I uaually have 30-45fps.
My video card is outdated though – Nvidia GeForce gtx560 1gb

It’s not always ANet’s fault if you lag (aka: skill delays) – could be your ISP as well.
Since 11/15 they have shown a proclivity for emphasizing and encouraging participation in what they can’t technically support. And, yes, I don’t understand it either.
Stop playing on machines from the late 90s. A 3rd gen intel i5 and a GTX 640 GPU will run Tequatl on max settings without breaking a sweat. The problem isn’t the servers or even the engine. It’s YOUR machine.

Perfectly said. Its 2013 and they have no plans to upgrade to DX11 rofl. Milking gem store is more important than offering a smooth and fun experience for your fanbase. At the cost of 20% of the framerate, ruining the game for the average player, especially those who play on laptops. That’s not acceptable.
I have no problem with the texture. Not to mention the ps2 is the most successful console ever running against 3 vastly superior consoles. Maybe the textures were not what people were interested in. PS2 had the best games for the time. GW2 has the best gameplay regardless of textures.
I’ve been playing videogames for over 2 decades. Graphics do not make a good game. I’ve seen that time and time again. If too much money is dumped into graphics, the game as a whole suffers. GW2 is a beautiful game. Anyone who thinks differently has to get his eyes checked.
Could it be even more beautiful. Most certainly. Would that be worth the cost? Probably not.

Shouldn’t expect first class performance with second class hardware. The game is CPU-bound and you simply have a bad CPU. You have good memory and videocard, but an AMD CPU is always going to be the bottleneck.

I think one thing we can say for sure is this game’s performance doesn’t really correlate with typical hardware benchmarks.

did you at least know that 99% of games supporting DX11 also can be played in DX9? You have a crappy $250 pc from Walmart you can still play the game and enjoy it on very low. Those with gaming rigs would be playing as a person should in 2013…
